Built out my own 13.7 for the reasons you mentioned. BA barrel, Midlength gas, with the nox. Threw in a high quality bcg and a good handguard, and have fallen in love with that particular combo. Definitely a great compromise for the times we find ourselves in.

Something else that works well with the middy gas 13.7 is a giessle super 42 braided spring with h3 buffer. My rig loves it, I shoot basically 100 percent suppressed but it seems to run just fine unsuppressed with it aswell.

Great video! Of all my ARs, my SOLG 13.7 is my absolute favorite. With a pinned WarComp, it gives me a touch over 16" in total barrel length. This setup gives me what I consider the perfectly balanced rifle that doesn't sacrifice too much velocity to get a highly maneuverable rifle.

Pew science says that the warcomp isn't that great suppressed with an RC2, as opposed to the 3 prong (or other SOCOM muzzles with labyrinth seal rings). Not sure if you've tried suppressing it. And I don't think any surefire muzzle device with labyrinth seal rings can make 13.7" legal without excess shimming.

Something some people need to keep in mind....a 14.5 and 13.7, 13.9, they are all going to end up being the same length, unsuppressed. Suppressed, the 13.7 saves a little bit of space and the muzzle velocities end up being suppressor dependent. The choice between 13.7 and 14.5 then ends up being what muzzle device you will use.

Exactly. Barrels wear out or you might just want to put a different one on the gun. And it’s not even that hard to do. If you have a vice, a wrench for the various types of barrel nuts, and head spacing gauges to make sure everything is ok, you could do it yourself. If you live in a decent city with a good selection of gunsmiths, you can have one of them install a new barrel for you.

Appreciate the interesting video friend. I previously only owned one AR, which was a 11.5” braced aero pistol. I refuse to register/destroy/turn in any of my personal property but still wanted something on the shorter side so I went with a 13.7” too. Super stoked for it to get here. It’s one of the new PSA Sabre uppers with the quad rail and FN cold hammer forged barrel. Figured you just couldn’t beat it for the price and all the quality components. What kind of optic/sight would you recommend on a gun this size? Was just using a red dot before but have been wondering if a lpvo or prism might be a better idea with the added range of the longer barrel.

I'm glad you brought this up. I love my 12.5" Criterion SBR, but I was trying to figure out if a 13.7" (possibly pinned and welded for interstate travel) might be the ticket for me. I typically hate muzzle breaks for everything (even long-range/precision shooting). I was thinking about trying out the Nox though, which you have on a rifle in your video. Would you say that the concussive blast is anywhere near the concussive force one would experience with a muzzle break in confined spaces? Also, do the majority of your 13.7s have red dots or LPVOs?

Perfect timing on this video. I was quite curious about 13.7's for a few days now when I was thinking "what would I use if the NFA didn't exist?" My priority is that it needed to have a midlength gas system. That only left me the question of 'what is the shortest barrel length for a midlength gas system that can run under the most situations, with the most loads, with minimal drama between suppressed and unsupressed'. At this time, we know 14.5 midlength works, but how much further can we push this envelope? I hear 12.5 can be finnicky, and IWI is the only manufacturer that comes to mind that may have done it right. Is 13.7 the least one would need for a 100% reliable midlength gas gun?

After shooting the shorter ones, it's amazing to me how much better they feel / handle / look than a 16" does. You wouldn't think that 1.3" to 1.5" would make much difference.

Where can I pick one of these up? I'm in a state that will most likely face an AWB at the state legislature level in the coming term and I want something like this ASAP but I can never find 13.7" rifles in stock anywhere from any companies. I'm torn between something like a SOLGW or a Type A. I am also considering the Ballistic Advantage Hanson series 13.9 as it seems far easier to acquire. Any input from anyone in the know is very welcome.

My only beef with pinned muzzle devices is they are rarely the muzzle device I actually want. If I got to pick the device they attach to the barrel, it'd be practically a non-issue. I almost never change out my muzzle devices except when I first get the rifle. Once I pick one, I leave it on there until judgement day. If I want a different suppressor host, I usually build an entirely new gun.

I have a DDM4 that I replaced the barrel in....it's now a 13.7 SOLGW. Been shooting it a couple years, w/ 60 grain V-max I have tested over 10 loads at close to max velocity and ALL OF THEM shoot under an inch at 100yds. I have had more than one 18" SPR profile match barrels that can't do that. It's just not picky-- period. I gave up on the whole SPR concept as far as longer guns go. My 13.7 has a 2-10 trijicon credo scope w/ offset RMR sort of like yours. My cap blocks a tiny chunk of the corner of the RMR in my badger mount but it's fine really. I love it. I have stopped buying AR's.

Pinned and welded muzzle devices. Because a 2.3"shorter barrel makes your AR-15 concealable with a stock. Unless it's a pistol then that 2.3" shorter is ok....

  • @calholli

I'd like to hear your take on the "cheek pistol" concept. There's a channel called "demonstrated concepts" who swears by shooting from the cheek with no stock. He even runs shorty 12ga's that way. And I've seen him put out hunting videos with 18" AR10, and he still runs that without a stock and shoots it from the cheek. If you wouldn't' mind just searching "cheek pistol, and buzzing through a couple of his vids, I'd really like to see you give it an honest scientific shake down and see how you like it or if there's any merit to it. I do remember in the 20teens when 7.5's were all the rage, it was pretty common to build them with the little pad on the pistol tube, and I actually didn't mind running them like that back then, before braces came around........... But I think it would make for a sweet video, if you dabbled in 'demonstrated concepts" cheek pistol theory. (the idea being to just run the AR "pistols" that we all already own, without the brace- since the ATF is going to keep being stupid) Cheers... Merry Christmas.
