Sonos One vs Amazon Echo Studio: Which Should You Buy?

Ғылым және технология

Now we’ve had a chance to get our hands on the all-new Amazon Echo Studio, we compare it with the Sonos One.
What we’ve aimed to do is go in-depth about actually using these speakers day-to-day and the differences between them, beyond just the sound and design.
What we found was actually quite surprising!

The comments on this video have been more helpful than any comparison video. A bunch of people who own both unbiasedly admitting studio is better, which I’d already assumed tbh given the age of the Sonos. And if I want to set multiple speakers in the future (when I’m not living in a single room in shared accommodation) the Studio is compatible with a more expensive Sonos setup. Thanks guys!

Amazon Echos also provide multiroom audio, and you can pick what size is appropriate per room, from the Echo Studio, Echo, or Echo Dot, making it a very affordable full home audio solution. And, they provide all the smart home voice control wherever they are installed.

Last year, I cleared the lot out, including many metres of cable and speaker wires. I'm now delighted with my Sonos system spread throughout the house. I have the Sonos Playbar, the Beam, and one Sonos One. What separates Sonos is not the audio but the incredible software. It walks you through everything. A negative, no bluetooth. Everything comes over the internet. I subscribe to Google Play, so the Alexa option on the Sonos and the echo is essentially worthless to me for selecting music. A few weeks ago, I got the new Beo Stage Soundbar. So, I put my three Sonos devices, in one bedroom, The Sonos app lets them work perfectly together. You can have them work together as your TV speakers, or for music. Absolutely amazing software.

(Note: This was written by me and posted elsewhere, so ignore the personal references - I pasted the text here so that I didn’t have to write it again) Ty: Two regular Echo speakers paired in stereo mode don't even come close to the ear-pleasing sound that comes from two Echo Studios in stereo mode. As you said, Ty, you listened to only one Studio speaker, and some of that listening was in a surround mode. The Echo Studio does not "shine" with just one Studio (when playing regular stereo music files, which are the most common). Two of them paired in stereo mode sound exponentially better. I humbly ask you to reconsider your 7 rating for sound quality and change it to 9 or 10, for the benefit of potential buyers interested in purchasing high quality equipment (no profit or financial interest for me). If using two Echo Studios in stereo mode, turn off the "Upmixing" toggle switch in the Alexa app (also called “Stereo Spatial Enhancement” in different versions of the Alexa app). Upmixing tries to adapt regular 2-channel stereo music to the 3D potential of the Studio. If you don't turn off upmixing, the sound will not be that clear and direct, and you will get the wrong impression about how good these speakers really are. The speaker will try to add some processing to the sound and that doesn't sound very good in stereo mode with two paired Studios. That processing may sound “ok” with just one Studio, but even then it's hit-or-miss, depending on which song is playing. Up-mixing is not perfect, as it is a fake or simulated (artificial) 3D effect; it’s not best for all songs and is awful on some songs (regular 2-channel stereo music). Note that upmixing is not needed for audio that is already encoded in 3D (like Sony’s 360 Reality Audio). Comparison of the Echo Studio to the Regular Echo: The regular $99 Echo has drivers (internal speaker units) whose sound gets somewhat trapped inside the enclosure case, as the separate woofer and tweeter drivers face each other with a small space between them (they point down and up, not out -- one pointing at the other!) instead of facing outwardly like the Echo Studio’s drivers. But the 3 midrange drivers and one tweeter inside each Echo Studio are facing outward and project the sound outside of the enclosure. That makes a big difference -- there's much more clarity and presence in the midrange and treble. It does not get muffled or trapped inside the enclosure at all; it is allowed to come out clearly and completely. I am hearing detail in songs I’ve been playing for decades -- details I’ve never heard before. Those details are clear as can be without being harsh or grating to the ears. The outward facing circular arrangement of the midrange and tweeter array act like sort of a wide-dispersion tweeter - no matter where you are standing you hear each speaker channel’s sound very clearly (ideal for when you are moving around, working in the kitchen, etc. And I am talking about stereo mode here, not a surround mode). The bass is clear and mostly tight - just right without overdoing it. And if you listen to talk radio on these, the sound (EQ) automatically adjusts itself so that the talker's voice doesn’t sound boomy (those built-in optimizing microphones work well). Finally, it is recommended to adjust the EQ settings using the Alexa app, and set the EQ to: Bass middle (5 on the scale), Midrange boosted to about 6 or 7 out of 10, and Treble to about 8 out of 10 (this sounds best in the very small alcove that I have these speakers set up in). Use a good-sounding music file for test listening - an audio file that has never been compressed more than once, and has been encoded well, and been recorded in high quality (not necessarily a hi-res file). An excellent sounding sample to buy and use for testing purposes is Rudolf from Burl Ives’ album “Have a Holly Jolly Christmas”. Sure, it’s an old-fashioned song but it is extremely well-recorded and encoded (at least on the specific album I mentioned). You can purchase it for 99 cents on Amazon’s online digital music store if you want to have it stored in the cloud and playable on demand -- on these speakers. Note about Setup: if you have a weak Wi-Fi signal, the slow signal from your Wi-Fi router may cause some confusing delays during setup, so if you encounter this, begin by finding a way to get an adequate signal strength to these excellent speakers. Move your router closer or maybe buy a Wi-Fi extender if your Wi-Fi signal is weak in the spot where the two Studios are located. After a minute or so of getting established, they will find their way to sync with each other and play in perfect, flawless stereo without you having to do anything after the setup. It's important to explain that the Sonos One lacks Bluetooth and Line-In connections. So, if you want to connect anything other than streaming audio services or a pre-existing Sonos setup, its basically useless. I purchased the Sonos One for my Audio Technica Bluetooth enabled turntable and found no way to run audio through the speaker aside from dropping $450 on the Sonos Port home stereo system or by purchasing an echo dot and having that play through the Sonos One as its preferred speaker (which, at that point, why wouldn't I just go with the Amazon Studio).

Thank you for this video - well-presented (though maybe a tad repetitious?). I have neither speaker (though I am tied-in to the Amazon system, with five echos already). But I watched this with interest to see which speaker, if either, would be suitable for an audio upgrade. I did not realize you were a Sonos specialist - if you said-so, I missed it, sorry - I gathered from comments. I found your review bias but not in the way people seem to claim - as I have neither speaker, I cannot tell. The bias I detected was to modern pop songs and I have serious doubts that pop is a good way to demonstrate any speaker - pop from this generation, my generation, anything between or before. I love pop but one hardly needs great hi-fi to appreciate it. I also know you cannot risk YT copyright-strikes - but you could have tested off-camera and shown a comparison chart. You kept talking of "songs" - now I appreciate some people use that word to mean "tracks" or pieces of music but you did keep talking of singing. What about all classical instrumental music? What about jazz? (I seldom like jazz but many hi-fi geeks love it) What about rock - especially prog-rock, which varies between treble and bass all the time? What about using Queen as a test? - there is a whole hi-fi challenge in just one canon. But using a boppy-pop tune - from the 1950s to 2019, well not a decent test of hi-fi, is it? Anyway, because you kept referencing songs and singing - which I do listen to but did think a poor test, I cannot use your hard-crafted review, alas in my decision. For the record, I do not know if you were bias toward Sonos but I do believe your review was honest and had integrity from your perspective - my wish is for better testing but I liked your presentation style. Thank you for your effort. Best wishes.

  • @tmitch45

I notice in the video on the Echo Studios in settings the 'fake' stereo separation is turned on for this review. If this is turned off the sound is much better and clearer and maybe would have shown the Studio in a more favourable light?!?. I found this out by accident messing around with the settings and there is also a youtube video on this entitled 'if you have a studio disable this feature'. I do think this is an extremely bias review as Smart home sounds are an official Sonos dealer and obviously don't sell Amazon products. The guy is hardly going to recommend you go out and buy a Studio over a Sonos one but the fact that he does suggest that the sound quality is very similar should tell you how good the studio is even though in the review they didn't have the studio in its clearest setting. I have owned both products so feel I can provide you with a biased review. I started with the Sonos one, I wasn't blown away by the sound, maybe due to the hype. Its a good speaker but a terrible 'smart speaker'. We had multiple issues which neither sonos help ,line or amazon could fix. We were dutifully sent a replacement which also refused to work properly as a 'smart speaker' so after many days in contact with sonos help line and installing and uninstalling alexa app, sonos app and spotify app the second Sonos was returned. This was coincidentally at the time the studio was released so I pre-ordered one. Its arrived and setup was a breeze, Alexa worked flawlessly and so did connection to spotify. The sound was great sounding 'bigger' than the sonos but again I wasn't blown away until I turned off stereo separation which improved the sound no end. To conclude if you love your hifi and home cinema neither of these speakers will provide you with exceptional sound compared to even a budget to mid-range hi-fi setup. If however you want a 'smart' speaker and you want a bigger and improved sound quality over the more basic Amazon echo's these speaker are where you need to be. The sonos is a good speaker but very poor for both alexa and google assistant and general smart connectivity. A glance at the current amazon reviews for this shows its hugely lacking in the voice control dept. The Studio is easy to set-up, and Alexa just works really well as you would expect. Now I have turned off the stereo separation function the clarity is there, the studio is louder and definitely has more bass than the sonos. For me as an owner of both the Echo studio takes it on sound and is far superior in all voice control and connectivity departments

For us we prefer more detail in the audio and you won’t notice it until you do a side by side review which most reviewers haven’t done. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.

If I was to connect a Tidal account to the Sonos can voice control be used to control the account or can voice only be used via Alexa and Google? Can I ask the speaker to play specific tracks or playlists on Tidal or do I need to connect Tidal to a 3rd party service like Alexa to use voice control? I’m interested in Tidal but Alexa and Google don’t support Tidal in the UK and without voice control It’s pointless.

  • @cdb7876

Pretty easy for the Sonos speaker to sound mid and high clear, it has terrible bass. In terms of sound you can reduce the Echoes bass and get very good Dolby Atmos sound when playing a song that features mids and highs. But you can’t get the lower bass frequencies that some songs and many Movies require with the Sonos. Any minor bugs found in the Echo will most likely be fixed in future updates as Amazon is a juggernaut focused on improving.

The fact that soooo many Sonos owners in the comments are saying that this review is bias, speaks volumes to me. I too found this video to be absolutely biased. The fact that he thought the Sonos was clearer was a shock to me, it most certainly wasn't...dead giveaway. The sound difference was just too blatant to deny. Seriously though, if you turn off the spacial 3D setting for the echo studio in the app, the studio gains even more direct midrange fullness (vocals) and increased volume...and if he knew that, and left that out of the review, shame shame. This is the first review in all my years of watching KZread that actually got under my skin a bit. The guy was either dishonest for loyalty reasons (to Sonos), or just has terrible ears for audio. No offense, just say'n. And for what its worth, I like both brands...but when it comes to sound quality in a review, let's be honest here.

  • @smarthomesounds

Hi Anthony, thank you for your comment and I am sorry to read that you find this review biased. We did mention we like both of these speakers at the start of the video and we understand sound is subjective to taste, some people may argue that Sonos sounds better whereas some people may argue that the Echo sounds better, and that is absolutely fine. We made this video to give our opinion (as sound is subjective) and compare the features, simply to inform our viewers. Regarding the 3D spacial setting in the app, this was not clear at the time of review. Had we have known this, we would have tried it but we tested the speakers at factory setting out of the box, to give the most objective comparison. If you would like to read a review from an independent source, I do recommend having a read of WhatHiFi's comparison here: www.whathifi.com/advice/amazon-echo-studio-vs-sonos-one-which-is-better - thanks for watching!

Smart Home Sounds Ltd. Thanks for the response, and your "independent" reviewer statement and link only solidifies the idea that your affiliation or bias with Sonos is real. You may genuinely like the Sonos better, and that's fine because sound is subjective, and above all, it's your choice...but I think your not grasping the fact that your making yourself look biased, based on your history and interaction with Sonos. It's all about perception to the viewer. Good luck with your KZread ventures!, and keep up the great production on your videos. Great quality for sure, seriously!

The trend these days is to push bass out to match current bass heavy dance music. The Sonos 1 is well balanced and suitable for all types of music. The Echo Studio is loud, muddy, and has too much bass. Both apps lack any usable equalizer. At least with Poweramp on Android and using Bluetooth, I can set proper equalization for music. The only reason I’ll be purchasing another Echo Studio is for a teenager that wants to control her Zigbee enabled lighting through the Alexa app. If Sonos included this on the 1 or the Move, I’d certainly purchase either of those instead. This was one of the better reviews and I appreciate it.
