A sad moment for sure, but one that any referee, worth his or her reputation, could do no more or no less than to award a red card. Sonny did go in hard and direct, his vision wasn't obscured, he did hit Watson dead square in the head, he did know the price; he paid that price, and it cost his brothers very dearly indeed. It cost a series victory over the British and Irish Lions.. Mitigating factors are of no consequence once the slow motion replay reveals such a blatant act of foul play. The outcome was 'done and done'. Off the paddock, Sonny is a different 'animal', a kind, humble, caring human being, who wouldn't seek to apply physical harm, but in the heat of the moment, at that particular time, he made a bad error. Thankfully Watson wasn't badly injured. Sonny will always have my admiration for being a lovely man, and a great athlete. He just made a howler.

Definitely deserved a red card for that hit. It didn't cost the All Blacks the game though. When he went off, the scores were tied. The All Blacks eventually pulled ahead by 9 points later on. The All Blacks still have themselves to blame but.... that go ahead penalty? That was the real controversy. Hate to see a tight match decided by a call like that... But the series dished up another one anyway a week or so later.

how is it possible that they received no reds for so long? Some kind of leniency? Statistically is seems a bit strange, makes me wonder if it is too clean. Edit: this must also extend to yellow cards. I wonder how many yellow cards they have recieved per match on average over the last 50 years vs the last 2 years and how many penalties received per yellow card - and if this is much higher than the global average.

You speak like you think that the All Blacks deliberately set out to injure the B & I Lions captain in the first test of the 2005 tour, but I have to disagree with the intent part. No team in their right mind would ever deliberately go out to maim the captain of the opposition. That being said, Tana Umaga and Keven Mealamu did cause Brian O'Driscoll a dislocated shoulder with their reckless cleanout and should have been punished, either during the game or by the citing commissioner. @@Porkchop259 wow what a burn lol northern rugby is boring as fuck it's a fact. Don't know why you keep saying otherwise, your best club players are our old ones at the end of their careers. Conventional boring rugby. Still doesn't change the fact the lions needed to cheat to draw

Talk about overrated a bench player at best ,he was lucky to be surrounded by great players in the All Blacks.Deffinately a red card conceded by a player with no smarts on a union field what so ever
