this game is basically sonic advance 0 since the devs of pocket adventure would go on to form dimps.

It’s a unique form of war crime . Also slippery control and heroes keep on becoming one of the same it seems. Uhh that’s a forces moment

11:14 - Jumping on the explosions to reach Eggman is reminiscent of Hydrocity's boss battle, but at least with that it was water blasting up from he bombs and not mushroom clouds.

I play Sonic Pocket Adventure and it was a good experience for me. I find it enjoyable to replay old levels from the Classic games. The developers did some good changes to some of the levels in the game which I enjoyed. Great video!

12:49 To get all of them, you have to collect SIX chaos emeralds from the special stages, because you can only get six from them. On the final boss, you have to hit the chaos emerald Eggman caries instead of Eggman himself. that will give you the last one.

Just remember this: Pride Month is that time of year corporations and businesses fly the “rainbow” (missing 1 color out of the original’s 7) in order to get that specific group to notice them, and buy their product. Its not about appeal; so much that it’s moreso pandering to one specific group to keep this country divided. Corporations (including everybody’s favorite: Nintendo) WILL NEVER BE YOUR FRIEND! They just want your money to stay relevant, and they will pull off any PR stunt to either help or hinder their sales. Enjoy this politicized month while you still can-never mind all those who fought and died so that everyone; including businesses, can take FULL advantage of all the freedoms that are being taken for granted.

@@Gecko1993HogheadIncOfficial actually the original pride flag’s rainbow had eight colours, not seven. If on the other hand you meant the original rainbow, a rainbow has millions of colours, not seven. The only reason we think of seven colours is because Isaac Newton, who of course discovered the diffractive properties of light, had a weird obsession with the number seven (he wanted there to be the same number of colours as there are musical notes in the common scale) and so he quantised the light into seven bands, it’s entirely arbitrary.

Before Nintendo worked with Sega to release Sonic games on the GBA, there was this attempt from SNK on the Neo Pocket Color. They apparently did something right because Sonic Pocket Adventure received overwhelmingly positive to perfect scores.

This is the best 8 bit Sonic game ever and a worthy Sonic Advance prequel.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the bonus stuff, like the unlockable art pieces you assemble through stage collectables. Still, a solid review for a solid game. I bought a NGPC many years ago and it came with Sonic. I still have the set somewhere.

I agree with you, this game is one of my favorite 8-bit Sonic games (which happened to be made on a 16-bit console). The game has amazing sprites with appealing color choices, great songs and remixes, and is a really solid game physics-wise. While it has led to confusion, I find it fascinating how they mixed the Classic series' sprites and function with the Modern series' style. You make great points in your review, like how the physics aren't entirely 1 to 1, which really shows in later Zones. I also agree that the Special Stages are especially difficult to unlock and play through. Overall, outstanding review!

I think the only way to play it without emulators is by buying a neo geo pocket. Which together is a couple hundred bucks

I feel sure I’ve heard that Special Stage music in one of the Game Gear games. Triple Trouble maybe?

It's very interesting to see how several sonic dev teams screw the crushing conditions. Even Sonic Mania gets ridiculous sometimes.

The music choice is always goofy but welcomed in this game, like the choice is weird but hearing 8 bit Doomsday is awesome

Kinda crazy how this game does things better than Sonic 2 in terms of levels and even Super Stars in terms of bosses

That game sure surprised me when i first played I also like that's pretty much a good transition between the classic style to the adventure/advance style the series would go from now on.

All of Neo Geo Pocket Color needs to be rediscovered and reevaluated in this day

I Played it it’s actually perfect 8 bit amazingness, runs perfectly and if released for sms back when super mario bros released, it woulve given it a run for its money

2:32 when i played heroes i never really had a problem with the slippery controls, if anything it made the game more fun and fast pace

Why is the art so good-

The spritework in this game is absolutely beautiful

8:00 I hated this level and I don’t know how I had the patience to beat it without save states. 11:15 I somehow realized you could jump on the explosion decently quickly when I first played it… not very sure how

FINALLY SONIC POCKET ADVENTURE GETS TALKED ABOUT

Those special stages were ROUGH. I beat them the old fashioned way, through much trial. And some of those puzzle pieces were tricky to find, much as I tried to resist resorting to online guides or maps aside from letting me know which stage they might be found in.

I had this game on original hardware as a small child, and even though I found the battle against Knuckles difficult in this game as a kid (for some reason), I beat the game (any%) without knowing how to beat the Gigantic Angel boss the right way. I'm THAT GUY!

This game is very good! I even played it and even though I didn't complete it, but it was really good!

Imo the best water level is the one I refuse to say the name of because someone is gonna correct my pronunciation as it makes underwater fun somehow while also introducing water running.

Pocket Adventure was actually the first time I heard songs like S&K's Death Egg (Aerobase) or Desert Palace (Gigantic Angel), which would explain why I prefer these versions to the originals. 😅 But c'mon, you can't tell me Desert Palace is better than this game's take on it! They're practically two different songs. I also really like this game's take on S3&K's final boss theme. I think it's in a different key, but it makes a surprisingly big difference. ...yeah, sorry, I don't have much else to say. I never played this game and the only reason I know about it is because of Charriii5's "EWW 8-bit Sonic Games", so listening to the game's soundtrack is the most I've interacted with it. 😅

is classic collection valid? its my go-to thing if i wanna play games like sonic 1, 2, 3, and sonic 3 and knuckles (i own a 2ds)

I remember Year ago I considered buying a neo Geo pocket color for like $ 170 Just to play this game, It's a cool game.

I’m pretty sure the NeoGeo Pocket Color had a 16-bit cpu and 8-bit graphics (if I’m wrong someone please correct me :)

The NGPC was 16 bit

If you love Pocket Adventure then what about the sonic Advance And Rush series plus its also really shameful that Sega haven't released it in modern consoles like sonic origins and the snk digital shops and lastly did use Retroarch or a real snk pocket color

No shade to SPA, but this is just Sonic 2 for a console that Sega didn’t make developed by the people who would eventually cause the war crime known as Sonic 4 with the fact that it wasn’t on a Sega console being an omen for the outcome of the company heading into the 2000’s
