    Sonic CD is a pretty amazing game with innovative mechanics, a crazy scope and a fabulous soundtrack. And it has one of the most badass intros ever! I still consider the Mega-CD original version as the best one, it just feels more authentic (and this obviously includes the lovely "VHS-like" intro) but the later, widescreen ports are handy for sure.

    The Sega CD version is the undeniable OG, with 2 great OSTs, one by Naofumi Hataya, and the other by Spencer Nilsen PC is a great port, close to the OG, and the intro has slightly better colors and framerate, but still keeping the letterboxed resolution The Gems version on PS2, GC ane Xbox uses the PC as the base and it uses the original uncut 4:3 intro The current Retro Engine versions are the undeniable bests, with music choices, an extra special stage, improved special stage framerate and having a playable Tails

    @@NB-1 this is a topic that needs more clarifications and also more perspective it was about 4-5 years ago that we started to see some claims that the mega-CD was supposedly "flawed", claims that instantly seemed questionable given the awesome games that it has in its library (either them being impressive exclusives such as dennin aleste or soul star but also usually the best versions of cross-platform games which is even more revealing regarding its capabilities compared to other systems of that era) then with the time, the way the mega-CD works has been explained into more details (via articles or videos) and while it appeared to be, indeed, not 100% optimal, not sure if the expension port is really a "big bottleneck" and not sure either if there were many better options that could have been considered by the folks at sega when they designed these hardwares the SNES used chips in cartridges to expand its capabilities but that, was also compromised in how it works, the DMA transfer for instance being limited regardless of how powerful the additional chip could be anyway back to the mega-CD, the comparison of cross-platform games is handy because we can compare directly what the different systems of that era could achieve and the mega-CD happens to usually have the edge over its contemporaries (amiga, MS-DOS, PC engine and SNES). some notables examples of that are final fight, popful mail, dune or mickey mania which are all technically better overall compared to the versions available on other systems. in fact, the mega-CD even has games that are better than the CD32 versions, a next gen system! flink is a good example of that, with the mega-CD version running in higher resolution, with nicer-looking HUD and better performances and then we have exclusives such as soul star which almost feels like a playstation game whereas the same can't be said about star fox despite the latter using a powerful additional chip in the cart so ultimately, while the mega-CD is not as efficient as it could have been, it can still rock _hard_ and in every ways, from visuals to sound. it's also one of the systems that I wish will get attention from demomakers and homebrewers in the near future as I feel that it still has untapped potential and I'd simply love to get new mega-CD games :)

  • @ryzmaker11

    @ryzmaker11

    compared to the SNES, the mega-CD can do games in higher resolution, with more complex processing, more sprites and better sound. it can also handle much more data thanx to the CD storage and when it comes to pseudo-3D effects (not just "mode 7" which only means the floor but pseudo-3D in general) the mega-CD is basically capped at 30 FPS but it can scale and rotate background AND sprites whereas the SNES can only do that with the background

    @@ryzmaker11 well, for a system (genesis + Sega CD) that cost atbthe time of launch two to three times the price of a brand new SNES, it was more than mandatory to have a much more powerful hardware, wich it has, on paper. Sega systems generally are way more capable than they were at the time they were on the market. It's true for almost all Sega consoles, except for the SG1000. Just look at the Genesis, 32x, Saturn and Dreamcast today. Even the flawed Sega CD.

    Sonic CD in several platforms :: MEGA CD/SEGA CD version : the original are the most important, but the intro still not being MPEG rather to animation Windows version : The port of Sonic CD for Windows 95 and later is the easy way to audiences who don't have Mega Drive/Genesis to play Sonic PS2/GCN : A non-SEGA console ports which based on Windows version, but the graphics are blur. iOS/Android : A mobile enhancement port of Sonic CD. 7th gen consoles + Steam : A enhancement port with HD resolution meets old technology is the best.

    I think the one thing everyone can agree on is the Japanese music is better than the American version of the soundtrack. Hataya and Otaga’s music is Sonic music, where Nilsen and his crew’s soundtrack just doesn’t fit with the game outside of “Sonic Boom”. Btw, fun parlor trick for those of you with real Sega CD machines you don’t want to do region mods on - you can burn a copy of Sonic CD with the American codebase and Japanese music for the past and present.
