  • @Lurmmings

    @@TheP1x3l It is and it isn't harsh. D&D can be played without combat, and it can do well without it, but when primary class abilities are 'Get better at combat', it makes it a bit hard to justify playing those classes. Its why I used to play Rogues and Bards, skill monkeys with abilities in and out of combat. But yes, games like Vampire or Cyberpunk which is what my table is playing lately, work well with no combat storylines. Part of me would love to see Arin playing a diceless RPG, or specifically a 'shared narrative' RPG where it is pretty much players saying what does and doesn't happen.

    @@Lurmmings It's only an issue when not everyone is on the same page. If the entire group agrees to play a campaign with the goal of roleplaying with little to no combat, that's what the DM is going to give and that's what everybody is going to get.. And the players will build their characters around that.

  • @rosariocrimson

    @rosariocrimson

    The combat can go off what Dan was saying about needing a good DM. The combat can be done purely off of imaginative 'my character does this!' and the DM just rolls with it and decides what works, what fumbles, etc. Though that way does run the risk of certain players overpowering themselves while others try to say more grounded, and also far less risk, so less satisfaction. Generic encounters mean nothing after a bit, and even 'boss' fights you leave up to destined victory vs 'you weren't meant to fight this guy yet.' Also some of the 'I do this!' things get really really repetitive, or are just way too over the top. Like there's only so many ways to say 'I shoot an arrow at him,' and constant 'I use acrobatics to set off a chain reaction where~ [insert rest of description here]' is just too much for every fight.

  • @McBehrer
    @McBehrer Жыл бұрын

    The problem is that D&Ds combat is so barebones that if youre not houseruling then, yes, D&D combat just that: " i move, i attack, i end my turn." Rinse and repeat for 2 hours because combat takes 4x as long as it should. Another issie with this is enounter design. If your DM hasnt put hours into the encounter, its going to effectovely play out like a round of Smash Bros on Final Destination with no items; Flavourless. I totally understand where Arin is coming from. I have the same issie with combat. I want to love TTRPGs but the stpry coming to a screesching halt so we can play a wargame for 2 hours just gives me so much whiplash. Us ADHDers have a real difficult with transitions and I thinl this may be why Arin and I have such an issue with DnD being 2 separate games combined into 1.

Brennan Lee Mulligan is a fantastic GM who is amazing at integrating combat into story and I've still had to begrudgingly go back while watching Dimension 20 and find the story beats I missed while I was skipping the drudgery of DnD combat. Arin just isn't interested in listening to his friends take turns having out of character conversations about whether or not they have sneak attack and what the range on their spell is. Tom Bombadil is the oldest living thing on middle earth. He’s older than the Ents. He’s older than Gandalf. When the Ainur descended into Middle Earth immediately after its creation Tom was _already there._ Which I’ve always felt implied that Tom was the Song of the Ainur, the soul of middle earth itself manifested in human form. And i think thats pretty cool. He sings because reality itself is, as revealed in the Silmarillion, literally composed of music. Music is the core of his being, he sings the song that is the world. He is immune to the ring because as Eru told Morgoth, the powers of darkness cannot corrupt his creation, and any attempt will only lead to it becoming more beautiful. The ring, for all its power, cannot control Middle Earth, and thus it has no sway over Tom. Or at least thats my interpretation, Tolkien kept his identity a secret to preserve some sense of mystery in his world, not every question is meant to have a clear unambiguous answer. So if you want to interpret Tom differently thats perfectly alright too. Him being Eru Ilúvatar is one of the other leading theories. With that being said, it isn’t strictly necessary for the narrative, even if it is a neat bit of world building, and i do think Peter Jackson was likely right to exclude it, since a movie can only be so long, and watching them in one sitting is already a herculean task. It still seems a bit disrespectful to to say he’s “not important” when his identity is a toss up between being reality itself or the omnipotent god who created that reality. If anything Tom is one of the most important characters ever seen in middle earth, even if he doesn’t do all that much. He is the page on which the words are written, he’s the stage on which the play is set, he lets other people take the spotlight as he fades into the background, and yet the show could not exist without him. I love Tom, and i think understanding him enriches Tolkien’s world far more than might seem on first glance, for like Yoda on Dagobah he is far more than he appears to be.

    That's right, another thing that the movies cut was the company of elves singing in the beginning. Tolkien was a super-devout christian, same as his pal C. S. Lewis. He created a world where there is no cross to save mankind, but the One Ring, it's opposite in form and function, was the defining symbol. The world-creation itself was a show of gratitude for God, trying to emulate a tiny part of the most difficult task as a writer. Didn't have to invent new laws of physics or nature or anything like that. Wonder how Dan would feel about all that "Philosophy of Tolkien" stuff.

Takes HDMI input with a HDMI output for video and then has either a 3.5mm audio out jack, Optical out and/or L/R out then run that to your PC audio input/Mic (usually rear I/O on the PC) and you can manage the console audio through the PC or as a seperate track in the recording software usually. Arin saying "this is the hardest level so far" to a level where it literally just keeps getting rid of the right side and arin keeps staying on the right side is just .... Astounding

    Thanks Dan for consistently shouting out slept on songs “eleven” is excellent, also I don’t know if you liked “butt trumpet” but that “you’re ugly” song goes way hard too!

    I would say "light inspiration" as far as the ground theme from SMB1 goes is the most appropriate phrase. The two songs share three (3) notes in common. The first phrase of the underground theme is the same as the first phrase from its inspiration. The invincibility star theme is the closest to its source material.

    @@miguelnewmexico8641 i didn't say anything about him being an alcoholic far as i know he doesn't drink very often. I simply remarked this sounded like the sort of rambling one does while drinking.

    I absolutely relate to Arin about the D&D thing; as an avid tabletop roleplayer with ADHD, I do not have the brainpower to roleplay a fun character and then also do detailed grid combat in the same session. I can only play systems that lean more heavily on theater of the mind and rules-light combat because of it.

    I know exactly what Arin is talking about with DND. You get so invested in the story and role play aspect and at first the e3ncounter of combat seems fun and natural. But it really pulls away your focus from the core story to strategize, do math and wait for your party members to figure out their own math and spells. It's easy to get into the combat aspect by itself because the strategy and calculations can be fun. But by the time the combat is over you jump right back into the high fantasy adventure and roleplay again and it can be hard to get back into it again. They are two wildly different experiences that mesh in an awkward way. Fun on their own, but they trip each other up and can lead to someone growing feelings of disinterest and resentment towards the game. Personally I HATE math and I have a hard time strategizing when I'm playing DND because theres this pressure to know every in and out of the combat, weapons, spells and abilities. I fumble a lot and often feel embarrassed and that has led me to dread combat. But the story telling, the adventure, the interactions with the other players and npcs are amazing. I love solving the mystery of the campaigns. I think having a murder mystery DND where theres little to no combat would be fantasstic

    Sister Marian and Summer Breeze is neat little inspiration. But Let's Not Talk About It is definitely a one to one copy. Also the Super Mario World Overworld Theme is pretty freaking close to Green Green.
