SONIC BOOMS at Edwards AFB! - Edwards AFB Airshow 2022

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Sonic booms shake Edwards AFB during the 2022 Aerospace Valley Airshow and STEM Expo! This is the only airshow in North America to feature real sonic booms. Each day, a US Air Force F-22 Raptor opened the show with a sonic boom at altitude, then later in the afternoon a NASA F-15 Eagle and F-18 Hornet performed booms of their own.
The F-18 performed a "low boom" profile which is designed to greatly reduce the impact of the boom on observers below. This is a precursor to the X-59 QueSST which will pioneer research in 'quiet boom' techniques with the goal of making supersonic travel commonplace.

I grew up on the east coast of Canada and used to golf early in the summer mornings with my father at an ocean side golf course. More than once we heard the distinctive double boom from Concorde as passed by several hundred miles off shore on its way to New York from London.

Same thing around where i lived growing up in the states. They flew F4E Phantom II's. Occasionally there would be a sonic boom and the AF Base would send an apology via the television news. One day a window broke at our school from a sonic boom, and after that I'm not sure there was another one. They flew day and night all weather. Then when they got F-16s, they seemed to only fly when it was a bright sunny sky. I missed it. Then they got A-10s... now they're back flying in overcast and cloudy skies.

I’m 79 years old and when I grew up in Wichita Falls TX, home of Sheppard AFB, there were lots of sonic booms back in the late 50s and 60s before they were stopped. Some were not so loud and some were very loud. There were lots of complaints mostly from farmers who said it was affecting their livestock. Chickens quit laying, etc.

A sonic boom does not occur only at the moment an object crosses the sound barrier and neither is it heard in all directions emanating from the supersonic object. Rather, the boom is a continuous effect that occurs while the object is travelling at supersonic speeds and affects only observers that are positioned at a point that intersects a region in the shape of a geometrical cone behind the object. As the object moves, this conical region also moves behind it and when the cone passes over the observer, they will briefly experience the "boom".
