I like how Sonic Team refuses to touch Gamma, he's one of the few characters canonically dead. Honestly, he's what Shadow was supposed to be, a one-time character with enough soul and humanity to warrant liking him. See, everything he does in SA2 has reason. He's constantly Moody and angry because of his past experience with Maria and GUNN, and he got his wish at the end of the game, to justify Maria's death. And in the end gave Maria exactly what she wanted as he passes on into the afterlife. Fuck man, I miss the pre-Colors writing staff.

There are no more electronic parts in the song. This can be taken 2 ways I think. 1. Gamma sacrificed himself and as such, no longer part of the song, but the Flicky's part gets to flourish with it's gift of freedom. 2. Gamma in the end, became fully free himself, no longer tied by programming. He now is, or rather was, his own person, who sacrificed his freedoms for others. He protected something that is "useless to him", except now, somehow, it does compute. I personally beleive both as true. Rest well, Gamma.

I feel embarrassed to admit that e-102 is my favourite Sonic character, but it's true. That being said, I think Shadow is a more complex character. His story took more than an hour to complete and his playstyle actually complimented SA2's level design. I wish we could have the good timeline Sonic again. Moments like e-102's death make what we have now even more painful.

He was referenced in Sonic Battle when Eggman build a similar Robot Called Chaos Gamma. Despite the name and some of the looks has he however nothing in common with the original and his own character.

You see, Sega never brought E-102 back to life randomly like with Shadow. He stayed dead. And still is. Requiescat in pace. comrade.

In the comics its said that Gamma's energy and parts were used from E-102 to build Gamma because Robotnick never knew how his distruction came about and since he was one of his best creations he made it a mission to make Gamma his best verision of the E-100 series. But that consciousness was past on somewhat through the energy Gamma recevied which gave him his own conscious which is why he rebels against Eggman for his own reason's. Its funny tho, because once again in that moment E-102 could have just taken control of Omega but decided yet again to be selfless and let another Robot have its own free will and mind. ~RIP E-102

(This comment is a repost of one I put on another video.) In regards to Gamma's story, it's definitely my favorite the part of the game from a narrative perspective. Gamma's story and character make for an interesting juxtaposition and shift in perspective compared to the other characters, along with being enjoyable in its own right. It does a good job of showing and not telling due to how little Gamma himself speaks, which makes certain scenes, especially the last one, feel much more powerful. And it has a defined beginning, middle, and end; Gamma gets a full arc due to this being his only appearance and, as such, feels the most developed out of the cast (this also applies to Shadow in SA2, though that was retroactively changed due to him being brought back). The rest of this is gonna be a long post. Jump to end if you want the severely abridged version. Many raise the point that Gamma's scenario doesn't belong in this game due to it not really tying into the main plot. I concede that he is not very important to the overarching plot, though I would add that he is at least somewhat relevant until after the Egg Carrier crashes. My reasoning for why this is fine and why he still belongs in this game is that SA1's story is less about the overarching plot and more about how that main conflict impacts different people. Chaos itself, as well as Tikal, don't get very much spotlight, all things considered. Nearly all of Chaos' appearances simply have it serve as obstacles to the main cast. Tikal is developed entirely through the flashbacks, which there are only 7-8 of at around a minute a piece. Most of the resolution surrounding them happens in the final scenes before and after the Perfect Chaos fight. And never are these two important to the main cast's plots beyond just giving them a glimpse into the overall context and, in Kunckles' case, a glimpse into his kind's past. This is all to say that each character's story is just that: a story. These stories all cross paths and influence each other, but each has its own purpose. Sonic's is a classic stop Eggman plot where he is mostly static; it is simple and to the point, fitting for what kind of character Sonic is and what he does. Tails and Amy have similar structures: they both want to become more independent and capable without needing Sonic's help. What makes them distinct is how Tails' story dives deeper into how he met Sonic and why he looks up to him, while Amy's story impacts Gamma and helps influence his change of heart. Knuckles' story is somewhat like Sonic's in that he is static throughout with a clear goal in mind, but that goal is recovering the Master Emerald with Eggman merely being a secondary threat. The uniqueness of his story is how Knuckles has a personal connection to Chaos and Tikal, being related to the latter and unknowingly guarding the former. This also ties into Knuckles figuring out why guarding the Master Emerald is "his fate" and other related revelations. Big is what happens when somebody of absolutely no relevance to anything gets dragged into the proceedings. He serves no greater purpose and has no desire or need to change; he just wants to save Froggy and be done with it. Finally, and tying back into the original point, there is Gamma. He offers a radically different perspective and style compared to the other stories. Gamma's story is about growth and redemption. He starts out almost mindlessly serving Eggman, but seeing his brothers get treated like dirt along with meeting Amy and hearing what she has to say changes him; it conflicts with his programming, the way he was made. But he decides to take matters into his own hands after realizing how terrible Eggman is, choosing to save his brothers by ending their suffering at Eggman's hands and freeing the animals trapped inside. To this end, Gamma fights the closest thing he has to a family and ends up sacrificing himself. This is a very profound and interesting plot on its own, let alone for a Sonic game. And it makes sense for it to be in this game even if it is not that important to the main story because it works with the setting and characters associated with that main story. Gamma was created by Eggman for service aboard the Egg Carrier, for use during his plans with Chaos. It is indirectly because of Chaos that Gamma exists and does all of this to begin with, which gives him more than enough of a leg to stand on in this story. And this all goes back to what I said about SA1's narrative to start with: it is less about the main plot and more about how the overarching conflict impacts different people. It is a collection of stories that are interconnected and have a shared conclusion. Each character goes through his or her own trials and changes because of it (barring Sonic and, to a lesser extent, Knuckles). Gamma just happens to die at the end of his story, making it entirely self-contained and the least important to the primary narrative. tl;dr SA1 is less about the main plot and more about how the main conflict impacts different people and the events/growth they personally experience. Gamma's story follows this premise and, as such, is not out of place in this game. Also, Crazy Robo is the best song in this game with this being very high up there imo.

One of the robots rebels against Eggman. The others are Metal Sonic and E-123 Omega. Eggman (still called himself, Robotnik then) didn't knows that Gamma rebels against him and he was considered him to be his favorite of the E-100 series robots because he beats his older brother, E-101 Beta and got the right frog who Chaos' tail and swallowed a Chaos Emerald while his younger brothers got wrong frogs.

It’s kind of funny that this is still arguably the most emotional moment in the entire franchise decades later. I played this game again for the first time in years and still caught a lump in my throat when this happened. I wish Sonic team could make stories with that kind of payoff again. E-102 Gamma was a one of a kind character for this franchise.

"We'll meet again, my robot friend!" - Amy They never do, and Amy never holds any recollection of Gamma. His memory has been practically wiped from all of those who ever met him What a sad fate.

Super underrated track in this game, probably including the franchise, too.

I remember when I was a 13 year old, playing this game on the Sega Dreamcast. I got to e-102's Story and I was having a blast and my sister watching me play then we got to the end and I see this ending cutscene after the Crazy final boss battle. I was quite aware of what was gonna happen, given what happened for the other e 100 series robots but the way they delivered it, it was genuinely impactful! I came extremely close to crying from both the scene and the music...THIS music! My sister cried her eyes out and I just sat there trying to compose myself... once I did I just say to myself... "Wow what an ending!"

idk but the opening part by itself makes this feel way more emotional than it should be

Remember when AAA games had soul? Not saying soulful = flawless, but goddamn man, good times.

This game needs a remaster. I grew up with this game, and I would love to see a re-release with newer graphics.

This melody never leaved my head, and it will never leave. I welcome it everytime I remember it.

I think the reason it's so easy for me to connect to this character is because it's an allegory of existence itself...he's just a robot so it's a good work around....but as a character that's essentially what makes him.

This game's soundtrack is one of the best ever. I swear it it's beyond flawless, too good for the game itself. And this was back in 1998, you couldn't hear anything like this at that period that was specifically made for the source material.

The perfect ending song for E102

Gamma has more entries in the Tearjerker page for this game on TV Tropes than any other character, even Chaos. And who can blame them? He is a sympathetic anti-villain. Can robots feel? In reality, no. In the Sonic franchise? Definitely.

I was so sad when Gamma died O__O I wuz like nuuuuu how could he die??? How utterly depressing... But he was awesome in the game AND THIS SONG Man this song... I just love it. I spent so many days just turning the game on just to hear it! Its so nice! Thanks for the upload!

The animals are only the power source of the robots, the robots themselves are just robots. Gamma died here, the pink bird is not gamma. Gamma self-destructed instead of activating his self repair because he wanted to set the bird inside him free.

@@Teixas666 In the anime, Sonic X, the gray and pink birds are the little blue bird's older siblings, instead of parents. But like in the game, Amy didn't found out or saw the other birds coming out of the robots, but in the anime she did.

You'd have to think that since Shadow is "The Ultimate Lifeform" he'd probably be able to survive a fall that would kill regular lifeforms. Plus he was in his super transformation while he fell, so he probably just went back to his normal form when he crashed.
