StitchMethod feels like the Daniel Day-Lewis of online guitar teachers. He doesn't post videos often, but when he does, we all know we're in for something good. I always learn something valuable that I wouldn't have learned anywhere else. Thank you, Ian!

The only Phish concert I ever went to was about 30 years ago at SPAC. I was a teenager and didn't have a weed hookup, but I did have a lighter and good peripheral vision. Whenever I would see some movement around me during the concert, I would offer my lighter and whoever was packing the bowl or rolling the joint would include me in the rotation. That was the highest I've ever gotten in my life.

Very astute observation. Thinking in terms of 3 to 1 simplifies the creativity process and gives us structure. I once heard a classical musician say music loves to organize itself in groups of 3s.

Ian, I love watching your creative process in "real time." It's like you see the notes/riffs/melody somewhere up in space then you pluck it out of the air, and it comes out your fingers onto the fretboard. Another great lesson!

Stich, you were talking about 3 to one years ago. I got it from you. You said it slightly differently, but you told us about it, and it's helped me a lot. The ear needs something grab on to, you go slightly away, then you come back, more or less.

Hey Stitch I found a few more Hells Bells by AC/DC, Layla by Eric Clapton /derek and the dominos (ok the riff stays the same but its when the lead comes in so it still arguably changes the entire song and can be counted as a riff since it repeats plus lets be honest its what we all hear when we think of the song) Sunshine of your love by Cream, Fleetwood Mac's song Hold me, Piano plays a part that changes 3rd bar in the intro, De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da by the Police,Green River by Creedance Clearwater Revivial, Manhattan by Eric Johnson (yes even the mighty EJ has used this).

Brilliant! I guess it’s the same sort of rhythmic principle as having four drum beats in a bar with a fill on beat four, setting a stable repetitive structure to build on but with an added layer of tonality? Maybe. Amazing video though, thanks!

very nice, Stitch what do you think of the fender vintage era 7.25 fret radius most modern fenders have the 9.25 and since it is thought that chords are easier to make with using a radius, would a 7.25 be a better choice, i know what a 9.25 feels like and i probably have picked up a 7,25 before but its been to long anyway i am going to purchase a new fender im trying to decide between the new pro 2 series which is 9.25 and the vintage 2 series which is where the more curve radius comes in at 7.25 both guitars seem real good so i am hoping to get some of your thoughts on this

Possibly an oversimplification, but I find this example applicable. . . Chris Stapleton's "Whiskey & You". The riff repeated throughout the verses is a simply 3 upward note intervals, followed by 1 downward interval. I guess demonstrates how flexible/versatile applying the principle can be.
