Murphy has a lot of great insight to convey. Where I see a lot of people getting stuck is where Industry and Art intersect. He's talking about how to write for the main consumers of music. The Industry is driven by the bottom line which you could argue isn't the way it should be and you would be right, but it's the way things are. Genuine art is better in all ways, but only a few artists achieve huge success vis a vis the Industry. I say, go for art. Do what is best for you as an individual and for music as a whole because integrity and creating something beautiful is always better than money. Having said that, a writer can still incorporate many of these ideas to further their craft. It doesn't have to be either or, it can be both and.

John Regan's Reviews, Tutorials, & More In another lecture Ralph has said he writes about 100 songs a year, cuts demos for 40 of those and then gets a Billboard hit about once every three years and that most of those are co-writes. I think an aspiring "pure" songwriter has to consider that life. If those are the odds for someone at his level then think about what that says. As a writer do you want to spend three years writing three hundred songs to fit a commercial formula that says what a certain demographic want to hear or do you want to write songs that may find a small audience that will require you to tour often... Not everyone has the total package to be a successful singer-sonwriter and not everyone who does wants to tour all the time, but I don't like how Mr. Murphy has in other interviews belittled those who just refuse to compromise what they write to fit mainstream. I greatly respect those artist even if they probably pull in a much smaller paycheck. Thinking of writing 300 songs only to have 1 make it though to it's mainstream crowd... Yeah, I imagine I would need to be on anti-depressants to make that work for me long term. What a truly miserable career that must be.... Of course in my perfect world all music regardless of how imperfect would be genuine and from the artist performing it. In my perfect world the "pure" songwriter would be reduced to writing TV and advertising jingles, etc... Of course if you think about it, that's not far from what they are already doing.

I've not joined TAXI yet as i'm still setting up a new studio, i can't recommend Ralph's book enough, buy it people. I've had some success with music xray (film placements) but i have a feeling that TAXI will be more productive for me. Thanks for all the video advice/interviews - invaluable.

41:50 meat and potatoes: "don't bore us get us to the chorus" (ironically). Michael proffers a great song example on Ralphs discourse up to that point.

Any reason why Michael nor Ralph mentioned punk or something along those lines, making that popular. Instead its been all rap, pop, or country.

Haha seriously. The problem is that people spend money on shit music that goes away after it falls off the chart only to be replaced with more disposable stuff. Only way to fix it is to educate people on more complex stuff and take their money before they spend it else where haha. Have a sound cloud?

Comment from Michael....."he was sensible with his earnings when he had his number 1's...he didn't squander it on hookers and drugs" DAMN....i've been married for 17 years and have been songwriting for 10 years+.....i'm ONLY writing 100's of songs TO blow it all on HOOKERS and DRUGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHAMELESS PLUG....i never aimed to write to and for the ladies..it just HAPPENED THAT WAY....i penned the lyrics to JASMINE LAMPORT'S "STRONG"...the last comment from a chick called Jill who listened to it was "this girl just put me right back in a room with my father to resolve a few issues we had to sort out between us....MY FATHER HAS BEEN DEAD FOR FOUR YEARS...how did Jasmine Lamport do that??" HAPPY WITH THAT REACTION.
