This is a prime example of Evan Felkers story telling ability. a guy who up rooted his life, and changed for a woman, breaks it off after years, and moves back home, and is out with bird hunting with his best friend to try and get over it after so many years... the detail is incredible even talks about his dog "Old Jim" down to his specific breed! (old english pointer which is actually featured on the album cover on "goodbye normal street" its a picture of Felkers mother playing outside as a child with her old english pointer who we can assume is old jim) and he also sings about his "Belgium made Browning" which is the same exact style of hunting shotgun he sings about in song "the house fire" that was featured on the album after this one; when he talks about his grandfathers "auto 5" which is the Browning 12 gauge that was made in Belgium... There are so many recurring themes and characters in their music like Lorie and Jimmy, and he chronicles their life, and shows progression in their lives.... Evan Felker is the greatest songwriter of my generation... anyway i hope you read this! Turnpike has been my favorite band for almost 10 years now!

To me this song is about two friends bird hunting back home in Oklahoma. Jim, the protagonist, left home years before when he fell in love and moved to Tulsa. Things went south between and the girl so she tells him to go home to Cherokee County, and all he has is a razor and a comb. He’s huntin with his buddy Danny and his old dog he left with Danny when he left for the city. Danny is tellin him his real thoughts and that it’s best he moves on cause he wouldn’t just marry her he’d be marrying her family. He almost starts to accept it when his dog points and birds take flight, he gets off 3 shots as he thinks of her. Danny sees this sudden confidence as something he’s always had. The songs leaves me thinking he’s gonna keep her on his mind and maybe hopeful. There are a few few Turnpike songs that reference certain character names, whether they are directly related and how they are related is up to the listener. The characters that I link together are Jim (Jimmy), Dan (Danny) and Lorrie they appear in the songs Good Lord Lorrie, The Funeral, The Bird Hunters, The Mercury and The House Fire. This is just my observation. I do believe there is a certain order of evens to to songs but that requires a long explanation. Again just my observations. I thought this might be interesting to you as a songwriter. This is the first of your videos that I’ve watched.

@@Texaspotato I don’t think so. Danny says, “look at ol Jim, a dozen December’s behind him, no worse for the wear.” He’s talkin out loud not directly to Jim (the protagonist), just out loud like buddies do, and commenting on how long he’s been away from the country. “And your time spent in Tulsa, did not help your shooting, look at the grey in your hair.” Also referencing in the beginning of the song how “Danny got 3, and looked back a-grinnin’”. While Jim “fumbled around and tried to reload.” Also, “Danny’s my buddy, we grew up like family, hunted this timber before WE could drive. The ol English Pointer, he once belonged to me, but I gave him up when I moved in ‘05” That’s when Jim left to Tulsa after a girl and he left his dog with Danny.

This is indeed one of my favorite songs of all time. The story telling is fantastic but what makes this song so special and catchy is the hard hitting fiddle that opens the song and ties every verse together so beautifully. This is a song that you can’t help but sing along to. There are certain songs that everyone sings in unison at get togethers. Friends in low places, all my roundly friends have settled down, you never even called me by my name, etc……. Bird Hunter is the greatest of all.

its about a man who moves to the city to chase a woman. he leaves behind his country life and his best childhood friend who he hunted birds with. the romance dies and he moves home only to find that he now needs to rediscover his roots. he returns to bird hunting with his friend and rejoices but also laments the loss of love. incredibly deep how he wrote it.

I had to look up and read the lyrics. It may just be me but it feels like there is a swap. The first chorus is her telling him she is going home but the last chorus is him telling her back that he is going home. A city girl and a country boy that just needed different things out of life. It reminds me of American Wake by Black 47. It tells the story of an Irish immigrant returning to Ireland for a visit and learning “you can always go home, but you just can’t stay.” In that case home was no longer home but in this one the new life in the city was never home.

I love your enthusiasm about this song--I love it, too. BTW--it is a lyrical masterpiece about a country boy that left with a city girl, but it doesn't work and she tells him to back where he came from. He obliges, goes hunting with a buddy and his old dog, but he's still thinking of her. Best hunting song in the history of mankind. Cheers!

Subscribed today, you seem to catch onto the small details of songs and you've been doing my favorite bands.. a added little thing to pay attention to with the turnpike troubadours, is a Belgium made browning a5 auto shot gun and a girl named Lorrie that ties alot of their songs together.

Like most here, I love this song. The story telling is simply phenomenal and it's one of those songs that only gets better with age. That said, there is something that I personally need help with. In the lyrics, "Says 'babe if you need me, I'll be where you found me Go on to hell, honey, I'm headed home'". Is that the singer/main character or the girl still? I almost feel like the "babe if you need, I'll be where you found me" is the girl, but the rest was meant to be the main character Jim? Maybe Felkers meant to leave it open to interpretation? The rest of the song I follow completely and the emotion of the man and his buddy... the ol pointing dog, the specific descriptions given like "the Belgian made browning" or "a flutter of feathers, a shotgun to shoulder". just all resonates with me.

This band is Oklahoma through and through. I'm from Cherokee County, Oklahoma. And as some of the others have commented, he's talking about growing up in this area and moving off with a girl to the big city of Tulsa. Before they took a break they would put on a 3 day music festival called Medicine Stone about 5 minutes from my house on the Illinois River. People eat their music up around here. Burt, Sorry to throw a wet blanket on the party.. and I'd have to fully agree with you when you said that this would be amazing to see live.... I'd love to see them live again, but they broke up in 2018... Substance abuse issues.

This song LIVE is everything. No words can describe the experience. I fell in love with the guy I’m with now watching him rare back and sing this song at George’s Majestic in Fayetteville, AR. I was smart enough to catch it on video. I love to watch it. So glad the boys are reuniting!
