There are quite a few references to older songs throughout this album Cherries and wine - Summer Wine by Nancy Sinatra Rosemary and thyme - Scarborough Fair/Canticle by Simon & Garfunkel Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin Lay Lady Lay - Bob Dylan Tiny Dancer - Elton John Out of the blue/into the black - My My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue) / Hey Hey, My My ( Into the Black ) by Neil Young I'm sure there are probably more. It's quite interesting how she mentions Charles Manson in Heroin (She's done it before, the videoclip of Freak is a direcrt reference to him), it's like she's comparing her trauma of her ex-boyfriend who died of an overdose of Heroin to the Manson's family because it's just as dark and negative, "Manson's in the air, all my friends are gone cause' they still feel him here" while everyone moves on realizing the darkness of the situation she just can't, also "writing in blood on the walls and shit" references the Manson family too cause' they used to do that, she's still in that very dark state of mind. Also worth mentioning, 13 beaches has a meaning to it but it's also quite literal, she once had to move 13 times from beach to beach because she couldn't find one without papparazzi. I love how she's getting a bit political and there's a political vew in this album too, in love and coachella she wonders about the future for children under the rising horrible political climate, in change she also mentions "change is coming in the wings of a bomb", in When the world was at war we kept dancing she displays this very stereotypical things for boys and girls talking about how conservative politicians like to keep things old and in the binary and talk about the new generations as "the end of america" but she's saying it's not the end, it's only the beggining because there's a change to come and it's good (which is another read for the song change). (She gets political in NFR too I'm excited for your reaction)

I also wanted to add as a separate comment for some potential context: a lot of this album needs to be listened to with the scope of 2016/2017 America in mind and the political points America was at when she was writing/producing this. Like you said, maybe she is more patriotic to the people of America than the institution. For the three mid-album songs in particular: Coachella, Woodstock in my mind: Trump got elected in 2016 and all of the crazy threats of potential war with South Korea. Woodstock, as you said took place during the Vietnam war so I feel like it was just her inspired and drawing comparison to the state of America at the time she was at Coachella. God Bless America and all of the Beautiful Women in it: I’m not 100% so this is just hypothesis - what you said could well be correct; it could have been sarcastic/from the perspective of an oblivious person, BUT at the same time there were many women stepping forward re. Womens rights and the overtaking of a republican government and the problems that caused with Womens rights, particularly the protests against abortion rights and Trump being a “grab them by the p*ssy” mysogynist. When the world was at War we just kept Dancing: I think this is definitely in reference to world war 2 when America was reluctant to get involved, pre Pearl Harbour, and even during - the balls and dances were still going strong in America while WWII was ongoing. I think that was Lana drawing comparison in the case of it maybe happening again. There was a big fear of war in America in 2026/2017 but ALSO a lot of people were talking about moving to Canada/the UK when Trump got elected so I think it may be in reference to both, similarly to Coachella - Woodstock in My Mind. Just my thoughts but I’ve had 4 years to analyse so I could have equally over analysed. I remember, despite being British, that this album really resonated with me because there was such an uneasiness across the board after Trump got elected for those of similar states of mind.

Lana Del Rey, is almost literally in a genre of her own. There is just no one else like her. She is so amazing, sweet, talented and her songs are just amazing. She can make a song like "black bathing suit" and it sounds like 3 diff songs in 1 & makes it work; her voice is just so BUTTERY rich!! She has so many songs that are not on albums but 1 that I really like is, an "identified flying bill".. It's not super long, just really good. I've learned that w/ Lana's music, if I don't like it right away, somewhere down the road in the very near future, I will like it. Actually, I'll love it. Everything she does, I just love it. I'm still trying to get into a few songs like "Yosemite". I'll hear summ & think it sounds "enh" and won't listen to it again but then I'll go back to it & fall in love. She's just amazing, I don't even listening to anyone else anymore because she's that good 2 me but I just started listening to her at the middle of 2021 so still fairly new for me 😘

This album came out during the first year of Trump's presidency. Everything in the US was so scary and uncertain and you can see that in Lana's music. America had fallen from so called 'grace' and descended into a sort of dark age where our leader was at very public odds with a nuclear madman. This intense feeling of woe is me is also paired with a sudden patriotism where you feel the need to connect to the good in your country in order to get through everything. It's enough to be young and in love, dancing through the wars, and connecting with like minded peers so we can all get through the tough times together. Edit: I also love Coachella because it reminds us that past generations have seen and felt things very similarly to us today. We can find a sort of peace (or not) in the cyclical nature of history.

Not sure if someone has mentioned it yet, but Yosemite from Chemtrails was originally from LFL and The Next Best American Record from NFR was originally from LFL as well. The NFR version of The Next Best American Record is actually not the original written version and you can find the demo on here! Originally both tracks were sister tracks (A side and B side) much like Summer Bummer and Groupie Love! There was also an interlude track, Roses Bloom For You, that was cut from the final track listing. Other facts: Coachella-WSIMM was NOT originally on the track listing and was added last minute and Change was also a last minute recording and the last track to be added prior to release. This whole era was very very messy as far as release goes but it was definitely a moment…

I think the point of God Bless America And All The Beautiful Women In It was to show solidarity and support for women (and all oppressed people) despite all the growing violence and tension. Like, even though there’s gunshots going on she’s still singing through it

This album is not very cohesive as a project imo but still has some really amazing tracks. I regularly revisit Love and Lust for Life just because they are so catchy, but my absolute favorite tracks are: Tomorrow Never Came, Change, Get Free. Very underrated songs. (If only Heroin didn't mess up the flow lol) And yes, excited for you to get to NFR! It's so good. And Landslide is probably my third favorite Fleetwood Mac song, after The Chain and Tusk. ❤️ Thanks for your work!!

Yeah I'd say it as a bit bloated like it didn't need to be an hour and a quarter and might have been more cohesive had she cut some of the songs! I think my fave FM songs are Dreams, Landslide and Go Your Own Way 💗

God Bless America (And All the Beautiful Women In it) was a song she's said she wrote after attending The Women's March in NYC, with her sister and females friends. I've always thought the song encompasses all the love and empowerment she felt while being there, surrounded by other women who wanted things to change in such a polarized world during a highly unstable moment, politically speaking (as someone else mentioned in another comment, being written around 2016 when Trump was elected) yet, as you mentioned, the song might very well address the problem of violence and insecurity women face across America and the world. It's just a beautiful song.

She wrote it before the marches. In an interview, she speaks about how she could tell where things were going and wanted to write about it. She spoke about it on the ELLE magazine when she was on the cover.

Beautiful people beautiful problems!!!!! "Earth is green from the eyes of a turtle dove" for me, thinks about the Biblical reference of how Noah sent out a dove to find land after the flood and came back with an olive branch. Given Lana's obvious religious metaphors in the past it's like "all doves see green"

Coachella- Woodstock in my mind was about the political climate in USA and the tensions between itself and other countries, so she's worrying about the children and people who were caught up in the mess and she wants to take a "stairway to heaven" and ask Him i.e God why this is all happening to these innocent people, at least that's what I've heard and what I think it's about. It's certainly a very open-to-interpretation kind of song so I could be wrong, loved your reaction though :) Can't wait for your NFR! reaction by the way!! I think it might become your favourite from her
