Sometimes things are FREE ✨✨ LINN: LK 85 + LINN CLASSIK

I scored a LINN 'CLASSIK MUSIC' CD Receiver and got a LINN LK85 Poweramp for free.
It was supposed to be broken. But is it?

You are very lucky! We bought a Linn Kairn and LK85 over a year ago. They will stay in our collection as our British sound reference. Looking forward to your review. We prefer a cappuccino with ours.

I have a GENKI CD Player, MAJIK Amp and NINKA Speakers. I bought them 21 years ago and they are still going strong, not a single problem in all that time.

Real Nice. Like you, I am a vintage Linn fan. I have two 140’s, one 85, four Kolektors and a Genki in mint shape as well. I use them all the time in 3 different systems in different rooms. Still looking for a fourth Linn amp to pair with a spare Kolektor. Hard to find these days in great condition. Many hang on to them for life. Enjoy

Wow, a real LINN fanboy 😉 I can understand now 👍 - I have a question for you. I have the Classic. It can take 2 pairs of loudspeakers. I also have the LK85. That can also take 2 pairs. I was wondering if the loudspeaker output on the classic (when used as a preamp) still puts out a loudspeaker signal. Can you set up the classic + the LK85 and connect 4 pairs of loudspeakers? Might be an interesting video 😉

Yep, that’s me…a real Linn fan boy! 😃 I can use my Genki CD player as a preamp so I believe you can do the Classic (preamp) + 85 (amp) combo but 4 pairs of speakers?? Why? Could sound pretty anemic. Not a fan of the idea but hey, if it floats your boat, go for it. It’s certainly a testable proposition. If you like it, keep it. If not, disassemble it. Pretty simple stuff.

@@theaudiophilebarista2424 The LK85 is designed to daisy chain to another LK85. You can drive four speakers. I do this to biamp some Magnepans. Used LK85s are not expensive.

You now have a very nice system! With the LK140 you can hook up the mid/bass drivers of your Ninkas and the LK85 to the tweeters. That will involve more interconnects and speaker cable and I would suggest you get all Linn wiring. I also suggest replacing the stock power cables with what ever high end cables are available to you. (Wireworld Aurora power cables work very well in my Linn system.) You will get very nice sound with that configuration.

Hi Chris, thanks for the compliment. - I was thinking about biamping but the NINKA is just single wire. I believe you can reverse the backplate and make it possible to use two wires or two amps but I can’t find any info on that. Are you familiar with this? - My cables are all taken care off. Thanks for the suggestion 👍

Very nice gear you’re picking up, Ivar. Glad to see it came back to life. The remote looks like it can also do calculus equations. I kind of lucked out on one of the Sony 300 cd carousels I have that I picked on eBay a few years back. It would make a loud squealing noise when it tried to grab a cd from the carousel, if and when it even did that. A Google search, a $10 rubber belt to replace the 20 yr old original one, a KZread fix it video and a little patience taking things apart under the hood to get at the mechanism got it working like new. By the way, Does Ocellia know you’re cheating on her with Linn?!😉

Thanks my friend. Happy that the carousel came back to life. They are an important part of your setup. - Yes, Ocellia is still in the same room. We have an open relationship 😁 By the way, check out “Real World Audio” on KZread. He did a video on my Ocellia’s. Nice stuff.

How does the LK140 compare to the LK85 at normal room volume? Does it just have more power for bigger speakers or does it sound different?

  • @Michael-xz1nk

I own both and think they sound very similar. The key difference is in the power, if you need it, pending the speakers you are driving. Wonderful, great sounding, small chassis amplifiers IMO.
