People ask the question "is skateboarding a sport?" and I've always replied "No, it is a form of personal expression." but, as I get older I've realized that the best way to quantify the activity of skateboarding is to compare it to playing a musical instrument. I think your personal style expands in much the same way (in skateboarding) as your vocabulary expands through years of playing an instrument. The things that get you hyped to play as a kid change as you learn to adapt and expand your knowledge in your later years and you begin to see the potential in things differently and on a bigger level. A skateboard is just an instrument after all so, you only need to pick it up and play it to find the new inspiration you are looking for. Anyone who claims otherwise is in it for the wrong reason entirely. To find motivation you only need to look at things from a different angle and you will find that the right "note", was there all along. I believe that this is the beauty of skateboarding but, I could be wrong.

What is the most desirable and even enviable in your teens and early twenties, like being a pro skater or playing in a successful band, becomes very less so in your 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s. Thirty years ago all I wanted was to be a pro or play guitar. Now at almost 50 I am very grateful none those things happened.

Zack your fucking awesome bro! You've got a good head on your shoulders. You are 100% right! I'm 47 years old and my two buddies that I skate with every Sunday inspire me more now than any pro did when I was a kid in the eighties. It's crazy how as you get older and mature how the things and reasons for inspiration change. You seem like a genuinely good dude and you rip! Keep doing what you're doing bro.

I have a very similar story. Growing up I was a product of the late 90's early 00's skateboarding and one of my biggest inspirations was Peter smolik. I modeled so much of my skateboard style around how he skated, really leaned into my drinking lifestyle and everything else he glorified. since then Ive sobered up and i now when i see a rare interview with smolik im almost embarrassed i idolized him so much. he is so fried now and stuck in the past and pissed away his amazing potential as a skateboarder. Now i get my inspiration from so many more healthy communities and skateboarders. My wife who started skating a year ago at the age of 30, the adult skateboard group held every other week at a local indoor skatepark, the major boom of women/trans skaters who are finally getting the attention they deserved, and people like you on youtube who have been so open and honest about their lives as skateboarders and pointing out the faults of the industry.

I’m pretty sure DP doesn’t care about being a role model. He’s basically a punk rock anarchist and he probably still wishes it was 1984. No harm in liking his skating. But he also is hardcore and not everyone is that dedicated to being so antisocial these days. Most people want to be liked and have friends. Not DP lol.

True story- I’d never heard of DP until last year. (I was a late 90s early 2000s skater from the Midwest and just got back into skating in 2020 and started to learn the back story on the culture). When I discovered DP I watched some old clips that are out there, the Black Label doc and followed him on insta. The guy is a madman on and off the board! I was stoked when Brand-X made some pro boards and then was heart broken when DP went off the rails and burned another bridge. He is a legend and a living paradox. Much love to all❤

Growing up I was inspired by the big name pros of the time, Bam Margera being probably the biggest inspiration for me. Then I took a bit of a hiatus from skating for like a decade or so and focused on BMX instead. Got burnt out on that and never really had the same passion for it as I did for skateboarding so I came back to skating in 2020 and my perspective changed because I had no idea who the top pros were anymore and I just wanted to skate. Found a cool group of local dudes who all have their own individual style of skating and they inspire me the most these days. Absolutely love getting out for a session with them (you all know who you are!) Relatively locally we also have a couple of really sick skate shops (shoutout to Yapple Dapple and Rollersnakes) and crews like Baghead crew who recently released their Satan video. Those dudes inspire me more than the top pros now. They’re UK dudes like me just doing their own thing, ignoring the “rules” of skateboarding and what counts as a “real trick” and just having fun on their boards. Also I’m here and I’ve watched a lot of your videos and keep coming back for more so you and dudes like Chad Caruso inspire me too. Im always fired up to skate after watching your videos. I guess now rather than looking up to the big names (although I respect them and think their skating is sick!) I find inspiration from the local dudes who make my local scene possible and are going out starting their own businesses, filming their own videos and just any dude who has that DIY ethos of making something from their local scene. Without those dudes every scene would die out and skateboarding as a whole would suffer for it.

I’ve seen post of Duane being so negative to those that became successful in skating or in general. Or being salty about contest results that occurred in the early 80s. It’s just sad and hard to see DP that way.wish him well but yeah.

Most of the time your "hero" will let you down if you were to actually meet them IRL. I hate the way we idolize people these days, it truly is unhealthy. Idolizing some one and looking up to them are not the same thing and most people that start to get a little bit of fame or recognition in any way usually cant kill that ego and start to feel they deserve everything and then some. There is a balancing act between understanding what you deserve and why and how to accept what you deserve gracefully. People need to learn to kill that ego. Cool video man, im 38 and looking to get back into skating this season after about 15 years. I'm hoping to relearn to skate while I help my young nephew learn along with me so I have been watching much more skate videos then normal.

Duane absolutely ripped, and looked amazing doing it….but he loves to drag people that helped him out too. From Lance Mountain who basically raised the money to save his leg, to Brand X who just dropped him after they went out of their way to resurrect his career after he made some horrible instagram posts about so many people. He just always goes rogue and burns his life down. He, for sure, isn’t a role model. A cautionary tale more like.

Yeah , Duane was my favorite skater in 80/81 , started back in 84 , and rarely if any , photos of him in the mags . By '86 , the industry was back , and so was the money.. Duane had a model on smaller board companies . Like today , most videos , photos was accompany with getting fucked up, drinking, drugging... By the late 90's , Duane had started skating the bowl contest(you know this) , got clean , married , had a son. Punk rock still , playing in bands . I met, saw him once , playing with his band US bombs. Good show, but honestly I was taken on the smaller stature of him , 5 5' , and my mind he was 6 1' , because of his personality.. Jealous of him , beautiful wife , son , pro skater , playing in punk bands. Fast forward 10 years , he is back on the junk , posting delusional b.s. on social media, divorce, and not in his son life, or rarely in it. Clash is a awesome basketball player , he got a scholarship playing for a school in North Carolina. My friend open Heritage Skateshop across the way from Duane "shop" , that seems to be rarely open , and Duane heckling the young skaters skating in front of Heritage. Eddie Elgura(sic) and others have try to help D.P. and don't want the help.. Sad , but for the grace of go I .. But remember , if you act like that , you won't be around long.

It's the same with all arts I think, music included. If you can't separate the individual from the art then most art becomes tainted. Especially if we judge from a present day perspective people who existed in the past. We can see them as who the really are and value their art at the same time. The human story is one of progression, which means keeping the good and reevaluating everything else.

Oh man, I did not expect you to be talking about Duane. As a punk rocker and a skateboarder, he’s always had the number one influence on my skating and on my outlook on skating and music. That is up until he started shitting on literally everyone. It sucks he is turning out the way he is. I wished he’d get his shit together and make himself present at the “masters” skate events and such.

Duane his actions seem to be caused by brain damage rather than purely his personality. Some people in his comment sections linked to articles which linked his erratic behaviors to long term brain damage from repeated head trauma, such as slams during his lifetime worth of skating. He's always been a troubled individual it seems like, but he really falls in line with so many others his age all of whom led a similar lifestyle,,,
