Fun Fact: When "Something Rotten" was nominated for Best Musical in 2015 (It lost to a touching yet fun musical called Fun House), the hosts of the Tonys that year (Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming) decided that, after a small bit of stand-up together, they would open their Tony Awards with the company of Something Rotten performing "A Musical" to explain musicals to everyone.
Ooh, one of my favorite musicals! To give some context you were missing, which especially becomes an issue in the second half: -Prior to Bottom's Gonna Be On Top, Nick returns to the soothsayer (Thomas Nostradamus, the less talented nephew of the famous Nostradamus) and asks to see what Shakespeare's greatest hit will be. Not only does he mistake Hamlet for Omelette, but he also recommends a bunch of other musical references (Uncle Scar, the Phantom, etc). -Both Bottom's Gonna Be On Top and We See the Light are fantasies, what the characters imagine will happen. Obviously, their dreams don't quite come true. -Portia is the daughter of the local Puritan leader, who is ideologically opposed to theater and music, and especially the mixture of the two. His dialogue is great in the show, as it's almost all gay innuendo. -At the end, Shakespeare reveals the various illegal acts of the Bottom brothers (soothsaying, hiring a Jew), but ultimately saves them from beheading by recommending they be banished. -Another subplot is that Shakespeare supposedly steals all of his best works from other writers. In this universe, Nigel is the writer of what became Shakespeare's Hamlet. I hear there's an extremely similar musical on KZread called Tap Dancing Eggs, if you want to see the full thing *wink wink*.

Another thing I would add that Nick Bottom's wife (can't remember her name lol) is apart of the saving of the Bottoms being saved from death by cross dressing and pretending to be a lawyer, arguing for their lives. Hence, the exile. There was another appearance of her cross dressing before that in the show as well, with Nick of course protesting and sending her home, only for her cross dressing in the end saving their butts. (Note that it has been a bit since I've watched the show haha)

And I would like to add that the "wife crossdressing and pretending to be a lawyer and saving a day" is most likely a reference to "The Merchant of Venice", a Shakespearean play where the MC's wife crossdresses as a layer and saves the MC.

I literally just came from that
One very under-appreciated detail I realized about this show: Nick Bottom is actually a character in Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and is the “butt” of a lot of jokes. It makes sense within the real world that Shakespeare would write in his enemy as comedic relief in a future play. I love how many subtle Shakespeare/musical references are in this show that could get missed by people without much knowledge of Shakespeare

Wow, I didn’t know that. That’s so cool! Makes me love this show even more :D
my favourite musical reference HAS TO BE in Make an Omelette when they sing ‘it was white and yellow and white and yellow and white and yellow’ like in Joseph but it’s literally just two colours lmao
There's a part of me that thinks that they wrote this whole show around the line "That sounds miserable! I believe it's pronounced Misérables". But honestly if you ever get a chance to watch this live please do it! There are so many more history and theater references during the non-musical parts of the show that tie everything together so beautifully.
I was beyond proud of myself when I got all the references in "It's A Musical" I felt so smug
I freaking adore this musical! There aren't a lot of true musical comedy's out there, but this is one of the best; the creative team knocked everything out of the park! This show has soooooo many musical references in it that you cannot find unless you're watching it in person (or on video.) If you wanna fast track your understanding of all the references in the song "It's A Musical" however, there's a KZread video which points out almost all of them! I think there's around 19 or so; it's a *lot*

I worked as an usher for the tours that came through Chicago and one of the last shows I worked was Something Rotten - honestly it was one of my favorite shows I ever worked (I even went on my day off to see the first show in the audience)! As a self-proclaimed theatre and history nerd, it gave me the best of both worlds and it was so fun to talk about with my coworkers! Also when I saw it, Adam Pascal was Shakespeare - I grew up listening to Rent (my two older sisters were prime Rentheads at that time) so it was amazing seeing him perform and on their last show day (which I worked), I got a nice picture with him and made my oldest sister jealous b/c she had the biggest crush on him in Rent... very funny and just a lot of happy memories are associated with the show! :)

I saw this show twice with the original cast and it was one of the greatest experiences! It’s the most I have ever laughed during a show. They got a standing ovation after “A Musical” that went on for quite awhile. If you liked Kate Reinders, she is the drama teacher in the new High School Musical The Musical: The Series on Disney+
Gotta love a good old iambic pentameter rap battle
It's called Omlet because the fortune teller Nostradomus misheard the word Hamlet.
Omlete with the dansih. Also, A Musical lyric video shows what plays they're pulling from. And there is a bootleg of this show with the original cast and amazing understudies for Nick and Portia, for you to watch the show.
Something Rotten as a title is itself a Hamlet reference- 'there is something rotten in the state of Denmark' I think is the line. It would be cool to see some more reactions to pro shots like you did with Legally Blonde. Shrek the musical has one (Nicks actor Brian D'arcy james plays Shrek), Newsies, Billy Elliot, Gypsy and Im sure there are a few more

This was the very first show I saw on Broadway and I got to see the original cast. I’d fallen in love with the soundtrack and was pleasantly surprised at the puritan storyline that’s not really captured on the soundtrack. I’ve always wanted to use “Right Hand Man” as an audition piece but its strength is in being a duet, which rules it out 😅 Still waiting for the show to come to Australia so I can see it again.

I forgot how funny this musical was - been laughing through the whole video. Have you listened to Blackmore's Night, or Blind Guardian's "The Bard Song (In the Forest)". What you said at the beginning made me think you might like it. For sad musicals... I haven't seen any of these yet, but I hear Les Miserables is very sad (what a surprise), also Miss Saigon has to be since it's based on Madama Butterfly, and I believe Cabaret has sadness in it as well. And while sad is not the first word I would use to describe it, Ghost Quartet did make me cry a lot because some of the lyrics were exactly what I needed to hear, and sad/dark things certainly happen in it. I would love if you could react to that sometime, it's by Dave Malloy and on his youtube channel he's released a proshot.

I’m so glad you liked this. I’ve seen it twice, first on Broadway with most of the original cast (including Christian Borle) and then a second time it toured close to where I am. Both times, I thoroughly enjoyed it as a musical theatre nerd AND admirer of Shakespeare. Watching you react to this makes me hopeful that you’ll react to both The Producers (a brilliant musical comedy from the mind of Mel Brooks) AND Avenue Q (what I like to call 'an adult's equivalent of Sesame Street) in the near future.

Heidi Blickenstaff did a great Broadway backstage series on KZread during Something Rotten.
Two other musicals that covers historical events and sets it to modern music are Lizzie the Musical- A rock musical retelling of the Lizzie Borden story and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson- A rock musical about, you guess it, Andrew Jackson. Both are great shows, and I would suggest you add them to the docket if you don't already have already.
"To thine own self be true." If course it's Hamlet!
12:08 the way I started screaming "Chicago" at my computer
I’m just starting to watch Netflix’s Daredevil (loving it btw) and I just realized how much Vanessa and Wilson Fisk’s relationship (at least in season 1) reminds me of Right Hand Man from this musical. I love that song, I really like this musical, and I love Daredevil so my brain is very happy to make connections like that.
SO GOOD to see someone react to Something Rotten. It's such a silly musical that makes my heart happy. I'd love to see you react to Book of Mormon :D and then maybe Spamalot! Big fan of musical comedies! My favourite little, under-loved moment is the end of To Thine Own Self, where he sings: "Sure as the day follows the night Surely we must see this through Damned if I don't Damned if I do! Damn it, I don't have the luxury to Hang all my hope On some simplistic trope Like to thine own self be true"
You should listen to ride the cyclone if you're currently adding to the list! They released a cast recording recently and it's so good
This one I've seen! (Not on Broadway, but.) It's a good time all around. For more history: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. It specifically riffs on Roman comedies, and it is HILARIOUS. (Also, more Sondheim!) The movie is one of my lifelong feel-good movies, even though it doesn't have nearly all the songs in it.
Ooh, another musical I'd suggest is If/Then, the premise is really cool
Brian D’Arcy James was also in a musical based off of the story of the Titanic. It is really good if you want to give it a listen or add to your list of things to do on here.
Very very good! Amazing Amazing
OH ALSO you should hit the Shrek musical sometime. There's an actor throughline to this one, and also Sutton Foster.

Also, if you want another truly amazing Malloy musical after this one, I suggest Octet. There’s no proshot or bootleg, but there’s an official cast recording, and there’s also a version with different singers on KZread, made entirely digitally, that is surprisingly very good. m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/rKuEt6ugiLy-hKQ.html What I did was I listened to about half of the album first, listening to some of the songs a few times to really revel in the harmonies (in the video the group songs aren’t bad, but they are not as good), and then I watched the video from the beginning which made it a lot easier to understand because there is dialogue between the songs, and also the acting on peoples’ faces goes a long way. And now I am going back and listening to the rest of the cast recording. Oh, and this one also has Malloy’s annotations on Genius, which is especially useful for understanding the tarot card symbolism that is woven into it.
