I remember listening to that story at the tail end of a shift and my phone died just around the time the neighbor's kid looked at the creature and the protagonist was able to protect his sister, and I was so mad at the sudden cliffhanger. It's one of my favorite stories from the channel. 😂😂😂

The story definitely has that Rust Belt feeling. That feeling of wanting to escape from a small town that clearly has something wrong with it, but it takes a while for you to realize it. Sure, for the most part, you could just ignore the issues and stay, but for some people it’s too much. The biggest fear these towns have in real life is the youth leaving: their already struggling economy can only be hurt when the young and able choose to leave for someplace better. I think the grandfather choosing to sacrifice the town is hitting on that. Feeling it’s best to just be done with it and let the town fall so no one has to go through that again.

Agreed. You can almost sense the hopelessness of the environment in the story. A representation of the dilemma many people born and raised in rural small towns face at a certain age. Choose to navigate and accept the only place you've ever known despite lack of opportunities and often diversity... or go out into the unknown and seek fulfillment wherever you may end up. The cost for either choice can feel intimidating especially for those accustomed to low population areas with limited exposure. I really felt the pressure of the choice to be made by MC. Awesome story.

I always find this hilarious. Not everyone wants to leave their hometown, and any situation I've seen these small towns are better than suburbs or the city in pretty much every way. Hell, I had a few of my friends from the nearest city move out to where I live for the lower crime and more privacy/freedom of movement and activities, like anything outdoors (camping, target practice, fishing, etc).

I enjoyed the body horror in this one, unique interesting visuals instead of going the organic route that they normally do. And while one could draw metaphors about staying in your home town vs cutting lose, it wasn't heavy handed enough to distract from the horror story itself. Thoroughly enjoyable spooky little tale.

I really like how you did the dead Jim corpse voice. It sounds menacing but also strangely humorous. Your narrations are beautifully dedicated. Ok so this story sounded like a metaphor to me. One about not staying in one place your whole life, due to life being so short and not experiencing the stuff you wanted to. Leaving the familiar could be scary, but once you do, you will see life has more possibilities than ya think. His grandfather never left in my head due to his age and his parents or anyone in the town didn't leave because they were rooted there. Like by the wires. To me the wires are a metaphor for fear or comfort. That's what I think about this story. lmk if it's a good theory

Good story! The entity as Jim did say their parents will create another string to harvest. So I think that either there are survivors, or everyone is infected already but does not remember it. Grandpa did mention in the journal that it makes people forget. It could even be that he lets the child go out on purpose to get some fresh new strains in the village, as he is confident that the MC will want to go back. Nice narration/audio as always. Looking forward to another more progressive story, because you excell at those with the most intense and best music to accompany the literary climax. (Not to take away of works like these though, really enjoyed it.)

I do like these more abstract possibly metaphorical stories. There are a ton of ways it can be interpreted, literally, as a metaphor for escaping an abusive situation, a more teenage angst version of hating your hometown, embrasure of destiny with transitioning to adulthood, and of course the usual dark one of escape through death and a purgatory walk of sorts like some of the "Land Before Time" theories. Structure wise I think it was the perfect length, enough meat to get invested but not so much that it meanders and loses focus. An excellent offering today, thanks DS!

Another banger to listen to during work. I love the open ended nature of the story. There's just enough there for you to be engaged with the story but it leaves room for you to draw your own conclusions. Not one I'd think needs a sequel. So many authors feel compelled to write direct sequels to their work and the sequel ends up hurting the overall story because it wasn't really needed.

I completely agree. The way this story ends, leaves the listener with a feeling of closure that the boy did escape. But also leaves the door open just a crack to wonder what what the boy went on to do with his life. It would be interesting to see how different writers would interpret this story. And have them write a short epilogue from their POV.

Wasn’t super into it in the beginning but I gotta say that last section of the story really spooked me, something about the whole trope of humans being treated as livestock and inevitably harvested by a being or beings that are far beyond our understanding just really shakes me to my core and never fails to unsettle me

I love the granpa. Despite everything, he hadn’t given up. When he saw an opportunity to offer his grandchild a chance, saw that MC hadn't fallen for the lie that everything was fine... He took it. It tells of how much granpa had suffered under the lie without breaking, that he still could see and offer his granchild a way out, and knew the sacrifice was worth it.

Reminds me of a radio my family used to own many years ago. It would sometimes produce a high pitched creepy noises. The creepiest thing about it was when my father said we should get rid of it tommorow, that same somethign went wrong witht heradio, it caught a fire and half of the living room ended up in flames. Luckily, my parents realized it, before the fire swallowed the whole house. And the radio was actually turned off that night. Probably just a malfunction, but then again... who knows.

It’s tragic and bittersweet in all the best ways. Definitely one of my favorites that you’ve narrated, next to the Left-Right Game 😁
