Something Amazing Is Growing On Our Green Roof!

A bit blustery today, but we got lots of work done on the house - many thanks to Meitheal Group #1! And especially to Lisa and Madeline for an interesting discussion - mostly spent standing on the roof over our kitchen.
The roof has been changing over the years since we built the house, so this is a sort of marker for June 2017. If we looked at the same roof in a couple more months - or a couple more years - we’d see different things but it would be just as interesting.
The ants have made nests in some of the clumps of moss - or possibly it was the other way round and the moss has colonized the anthills. Either way, they both seem to be happy with the arrangement.
Ok, here are some important website links. Please check them out..
Here's Tim's amazing guitar machine..
www.chordelia.com
here's our online store where you can see some of the craft things we make and sell..

and here's our Patreon page where you can see more of our plans and dreams. (Remember even 5 dollars would make a BIG difference to us and we'd be very grateful.)

and finally our FaceBook page / way.outwest.524 (Not quite sure what to do with this but we put photos and extra comments when we get around to it..)

What a lovely little spot in the world you live. Not far from me, there is a wild beehive set up in a shrub in a neighbors yard. I really hope they call a bee keeper to relocate them instead of trying to kill them...

Surprised how damp it is given the slope. In our little meadow having kept the equine out we now have common spotted orchids. Today while I was hand scything I heard the song of Jeremy Cricket, first time in several years & lovely to learn that they have returned, but so far no grass hoppers, but I hope. Alas though no swallows this year, seriously miss them.

lol....AWESOME Meadow on these folks home indeed! Insulation factor,...hmm...something like cool in the summer, warm in the winter? This is a must do for us, up here on the central plateau(cen.Mexico), sadly most folks here tend to favor adding on new additions(cement and brick)to their homes instead of favoring green spaces, thus during the summer our home is HOT and during the winter its COLD, well not north country cold, but "extra blanket cold type" weather.

  • @WayOutWestx2

The insulation is mostly in the rockwool between the joists, but certainly in summer the grass/soil will keep a lot of heat out

  • @WayOutWestx2

Yes, we had a great start for the year - but then we had nothing but cold rain for three weeks recently just when things should have been rocking along. In beekeeping you have to take long-term decisions. In general the summers have been too wet to guarantee a harvest for me - but there will always be exceptions. I had built up to 120 hives and that took a lot of work whether the summer was wet or not. In the end I decided it was too risky (I have to pay a mortgage whether I harvest honey or not).

So lovely, and fascinating! Will be very interesting to see how it develops! Would anyone mind identifying the flower is at 1:51...I have it in my garden, but I don't know what it is. I can't find it in my flower books. I was wondering if it was maybe some kind of onion or garlic, but the flowers never puffed out into a ball, they just drooped. I hope someday I know as much about plants as you two do! Going to have to study lots!

Passive farming is interesting for some plant types that work well for your local environment you just plant an area let nature take its course and then harvest a percentage of it letting it spread and renew itself for those areas you have but don't really use as a garden or grazing. You can do this on empty public land "Guerilla Gardening" it is a nice food stock buffer for hard times.
