Somerton Deep Lock to Heyford Common - A time-lapse Narrowboat trip on the Oxford Canal.

Somerton Deep Lock to Heyford Common, near Upper Heyford - A time-lapse Narrowboat trip on the Oxford Canal. 6th April 2018.
Most of my time-lapse videos now use a different frame rate. They will play slower, smoother, and longer. The new frame rate is variable, depending on lighting conditions, between 3 and 5 frames per second. Older time-lapse videos were recorded at one frame per second.
If you still find that they play too fast for your liking, you can slow them down further. Click the settings (gear) icon on the KZread player and select the playback speed you want. Remember to change it back to normal when you have finished as it also slows down the audio!

I think the old bridges right by a lock is probably one of the best image I have of English canals. I love the old bridges too. But next to each other is my favorite image.

enjoying your stuff very much - the locks may be boring to you because you have done thousands - but a huge fascination to many of your viewers I think - well done

lets agree to disagree - doubt I am alone in this viewers view - the more lock works we see the happier we are - but hey what do I know - keep it coming

Another nice trip. If you have any funny, scary, weird stories to tell about your canal life or stories you have heard it would be interesting, to me, to listen while you cruise along. Peace.

Thank you. I will probably do things like that as separate videos in their own right. I have to add voice-overs at the editing stage because my engine is too noisy to record my voice whilst I am actually moving along.

Some questions... I wonder if you can assist... Where did the towpath go as you cruise thru and after Somerton? Many years ago (50+) I recall a huge complex of buidings adjoing the canal close to or nearby Somerton Deep lock... A very copiuos cobbled courtyard maybe 30 yards along the canal with a range of stables and boxes about 20 yards back from the waters edge.. A fully working forge... A number of accomodation buildings and cart barns. No road access as I recall. I have some old photos .. Have these buildings all gone? Later of course The USAF would fly at canal boat roof height at sub sonic approach to Heyford air base. Other times..same canal Oh and... Does the canal lock onto the river at any point? I seem to recall it did.

I noticed that you pulled the boat through after letting the water out of one of the locks. I seldom see this, but I would think it would be faster than getting back in the boat, motoring out of the lock, and mooring downstream of the lock. How do you decide whether to motor out, or just pull the boat?

  • @NarrowboatJourneys

It's usually quicker and easier to pull the boat out by hand when you're on your own. If there's another boat coming I just motor out.
