Frequently the case, most counterfeiters don't try to spend it themselves, you get the money in weird ways like flea-markets, person to person purchases, or occasionally just found on the ground, you would be surprised how many excuses you get, most people end up embarrassed about it, and gladly wait for the police to show up to add context to the report, it's normally the ones who know who leave right away. US currency even back then has red and blue fibers embedded in it, which are easy to see under the microscope. Older notes are victim to bleaching. The treasury is trying to pull all the older bills off of circulation because people will take $1 bills and bleach them turning them into older style hundreds. There's a security strip even in the 1990 $100 bills. But almost all bills have the ridged collar. You can scratch the collar on almost any bill except for a lot of ones and tell her real because it'll be ridges on the president's collar.

UV light, it’s a real one dollar bill that they remove the ink and printed a 100 bill instead. They used raised embossed ink to raise the ink. I learned a lot in being a scrapbooking department manager. Edit: every bill over 5 has a different color strip when you use UV light. I would suggest to buy a UV light money machine. That one of the old bills, doesn't have the blue security strip but does have one that is kinda like a watermark. Probably out of Peru the make some the very best counterfeit bills. The thing line that boarders the edges of the bill are micro printed that fake one you have the words are all blured. Into a line you can't make out the words. Hold it up to the light it should have a water mark if the presidents head. The exterior boarder line is micro printed, the old bills have a line when help up to the light that you can see looks like black letters stating the value of the bill. On the corner where the dollar value is printed it embossed... as a matter if fact the whole bill is embossed. You should be able to feel the printed lines letters , numbers , art work with you finger tips if you close your eyes it will feel similar to a dime. The Ink on the number value in the 4 corners if you look at it at angle itn direct light and rock it back and forth will color shift from green to black. And the are about a half dozen more check that you don't need specialised equipment/ to check. If you want to see a good example of what the micro printing should look like take you social security card and look at the line where you signed it with a magnifying glass. The micro printing will look like that.

For example, in $100 bills issued between 1990-1996, the words “The United States of America” should appear on the outer edge of the portrait oval.[14] For bills issued between 1996-2013, “USA100” should appear in the numeral 100 on the lower left-hand corner. A good trick is to scratch the ink where the persons shoulder is on the front of the bill. The ink is always raised ever so slightly and you can feel the texture, or lack thereof, pretty quickly. If you are unable to feel any raised ink, at the very least it will allow you to become suspect of the bill. As a secondary check, you can also hold it up to a light and see if there is a holographic picture of the person hidden between the layers. It is generally only visible when held up to light. If these two things are missing from the bill, I never accept them.

In the UK £50 notes r our highest denomination note and we check them with a similar pen but our pen only marks the note if it is fake. since a few years ago we have had to start checking them the old fashioned way because the counterfeiters have been coating them with hairspray so the pen doesn't mark them.

The pens only work on the paper itself, people bleach 5s and such and reprint higher values, you need to use a backlight to check the security strip each denomination has a specific color strip. as all 5s and up has a security strip so dont assume just cause it has one that it is that actual denomination. Also the watermark is a indicator , but its a bit harder now.

The aluminum transparency strip was added in 1990 along with microprinting around the Presidents frame (any bill 1990-1996 you will see THEUNITEDSTATESOFAMERICA repeated). 1996 the watermark was added and in 2013- we started printing funny money! Take it to the bank and have them authenticate it- if they say it's fake, they might take it and ask some questions but it shouldn't hurt either way.

The Secret Service has published guides on the security features of most bills going back to at least the 1980's. Pens can be defeated by chemical agents, and many chemical agents actually ruin the counterfeit pen anyways so they won't work right anymore. UV lights, magnifying glasses, and backlights are the typical tools combined with inspecting the bills to match it with the security features of that series bill. Another good test is often times the dimensions of counterfeits are wrong, so you can compare the size of it to a known good bill. Sometimes you may need to get down to making sure all the markings are appropriate, and even then the human eye can only go so far. A 1980's series $100 bill does not have a security thread so it would not have helped you. Suspicious bills should also generally be mailed into the Secret Service. It is really weird your bank didn't do that when you brought it to them.

That bill was printed between March 17, 1981 - July 5, 1983 (this is the time frame Angela Marie Buchanan was the US Treasurer). This was before any counterfeit measures were placed. You will not see that stripe you are referring to as it wasn't put into money until 1990. The bank would not give you back a counterfeit bill. They would hold it and contact Secret Service. They most likely refused the bill as the normal means of verifying it’s authenticity could not be done.

The pen test is easily bypassed by spraying them with a thin layer of hairspray. This is commonly known in the UK and pens are never used because of this. The pub i ran used UV lights at each register instead. Rasied lettering, paper quality watermark and silver threaded are the true tests. However in the uk they now have a plastic window with a hologram which is easier to check.

In the Philippines, if there is no uv light nearby to check the money, we used to do the "crumple test" where we compare the alleged fake money against the legit by crumpling both of them on each hand. We then watch them unfurl and compare the rate they unfurl. Genuine money will unfurl almost in the same manner each time while the fake ones unfurl like a regular paper.

  • @corvettebob96

Several posters already mentioned it is probably a $1 or $5 that has been washed and had $100 printed over it. It might have a watermark for the original bill in the paper when you hold it up to a light if it is 2000(?) or newer paper. That is why the paper passes the feel and pen test. I too am surprised the bank gave it back to you. I would collect money like that for my own entertainment but don't want any federal employees interviewing me. I vaguely remember reading an article about 30 years ago. Maybe from Readers Digest? Third world countries were getting ahold of our old money printing presses and printing all the US money they wanted. I also read that programs like Paint and Adobe specifically do not allow a person to print the colors (or scan minute details?) of money in order to avoid people using printers to make fakes. You are right. The font should be the same as what is on the $5. Just checked a 2003 $100 I have. Sorry for your loss. More than likely the person that paid you was unaware it was fake too. It could have changed hands several times before your bank finally caught it.

That's not that surprising... I've come across a few bills that passed the pen test as well. There is an over the counter clear spray paint that they use to spray a light coat on fake bills and the paint makes them pass the pen test. I agree with others though, that bill doesn't look fake, just old before the security thread was introduced. Ask another bank to verify it. Most fake bills don't have the red and blue fibers in the paper either, but that bill had them.
