    If being gay really was a choice, wouldn't that make everyone bisexual or pansexual by default. Because in order for a sexual preference to be a choice, they suggest that everyone can make that choice at any time, regardless of how they were born.

    @@CREEPYCREEPER70 I can think of many other reasons one one be against gay marriage. For one you could say it’s a contradiction in terms. Historically, marriage has been defined as a binding relationship between a man and woman for the sake of creating a new family. Saying two men are married would be like saying there is a married bachelor or square circle. A homosexual couple also can’t create children, which is historically the purpose of marriage, and so they’re automatically ineligible on those grounds as well. And let’s say you do believe homosexual relationships are unnatural. If they are, would it be homophobic to state that fact as your reason? Would it be racist to say Asians are shorter on average? Nothing personal, it’s just a fact. And if it is not unnatural (and I don’t see how you would argue it is without changing definitions), but you genuinely believe that it is, then it’s still not homophobic. It’s nothing personal, it’s just a fact (whether or not you’re mistaken on the facts is irrelevant to the motive.)

  • @CREEPYCREEPER70

    @CREEPYCREEPER70

    @@KnuttyEntertainment Terms and purposes change over time and there's nothing wrong with that. Regarding child bearing, it would mean that infertile people wouldn't be able to get married. However, you have no issue with infertile people marrying so your main issue is same sex marriage. Again, meanings change. For example, marriage was once used primarily to unify families and had very little to do with love, with love-marriages being a work of fiction. In contrast, now marriage is used to signify love. Under this definition, same-sex marriage is valid. Also, I didn't imply that same-sex marriage was unnatural, I was saying that people usually use that as a racist talking point. If this confused you let me be more clear, the reason you are against same-sex marriage is because you're homophobic. You are aware that being homophobic is a negative trait and so you use ridiculous and flimsy reasons to rationalize your homophobia.

  • @KnuttyEntertainment

    @KnuttyEntertainment

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@CREEPYCREEPER70 I’m not even sure how you define homophobia, much less why it would be a negative trait. Anyone with a cursory knowledge of etymology can see the flaws with the term. (Literally means fear of uniformity) If by homophobia you mean unjust discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, I don’t think it’s a very strong case, and why it would be worse than any form of unjust discrimination. And if you include justified discrimination as homophobic, then I don’t think it’s inherently wrong. I justifiably discriminate against murderers when it comes to gun rights. And marriage isn’t even a right, it’s a cultural/religious ritual. On your point about infertile people, people don’t typically know they’re infertile before they’re married (especially back in the day). You also make the very good point that marriage was for uniting and forming families, and not the result of romance, all the more reason why one might be against same sex marriages. They’re not for romance, so why the insistence on marrying to show your attraction, versus a secular domestic partnership? This does not even go into all the religious components of marriage, which has been intertwined with marriage for all human history. Now I wasn’t under the impression that you thought same sex marriage was unnatural, quite the opposite. My point is that whether or not it is unnatural is irrelevant to whether someone is homophobic, and that if it is unnatural that would be rational grounds to oppose the practice.

  • @GustavRex
    @GustavRex2 жыл бұрын

    When people are asked with a really simple question that is essentially just: "Are you homophobic?," and then starts the answer with "Well," you might as well just admit you're homophobic. Like drop the act, you aren't fooling anyone, we can tell you're a bigot who KNOWS it's wrong, but choose to be so anyway. I think it's a bit more complicated than a lot of people realize. I'd bet plenty of them have doubts and uncertainties about their beliefs and shouldn't be encouraged to "just be homophobic". I also think that some students want to avoid any issues with their schooling and would rather give a vague or "agreeable" with the elders sort of opinion as to avoid hampering their school experience or being ostracized by their community. Sometimes it's better to be quiet about your opinions when giving them can only serve to hurt you and improve nothing. Better to instead being active when and where it actually matters, like I'm sure some French partisans gave a Heil just an hour before giving Nazis hell.

    I think the main issue is they conflate gay with sex. Like you can choose to not have sex, therefore you can choose not to be gay. The other issue is they believe God makes everyone the way they are and being gay is evil. So to admit it's not a choice is to admit God intentionally makes people gay to punish them which makes it very hard not to argue that God is immoral(the calvanists have no problem with it).

    I find Hasan's point at 3:50 really interesting, because I feel that evolutionary biology is indisputable, yet when we did a survey in my class at BYU, we found that only around 40% of students believed in evolutionary biology. By the end of the semester, that dynamic had almost completely flipped, and it was by teaching the students about church history, and the verbatim stance of the church on the matter that many were convinced to join scientific reality. So it is less that the school is teaching people information contrary to the Church's doctrine, and more that BYU is undoing the brain rot developed by these student's upbringing while allowing them to not forsake their beliefs.

    Utah is a very strange case though because it is very homogenous here and a lot of people even ex-Mormons are very weirdly fascinated by people of color here. It's real weird I'll just listen to my friends talk about this stuff and since it is again mostly homogenous people will say wild shit in front of people of color and be like "woops sorry". People here have a lot less of a filter. And what the church teaches them is to be super nice and kind to everyone. And a lot of the time for people whom are queer like me, or a person of color, they'll often time come across with an attitude of disdain and condescending pity. It's really weird here. The racism and homophobia here is literally different because of the churches presence. The way a lot of people go about it comes across way different than other forms of bigotry. I was a Mormon until I was 24, served a mission, and graduated from BYU. The planets thing is true to an extent. It's just not taught in primary. As far as I know, the ability to create planets isn't specifically stated (though it might be, a lot of leaders have said wild things throughout the years), but it is doctrine that faithful sealed members can become like god. Joseph Smith famously stated that god was once like us and we are on a path of progression toward godhood as well. The reasoning is that since god has created at least one planet, faithful sealed members will be able to as well. This is a very widely held belief among members of the church. I heard it in seminary, sunday school, BYU, my mission, etc. What Hassan is wrong about though, is that people are stuck with their first spouse for eternity. This is only true if they are A) sealed in the temple, B) are both faithful enough (ie will repent of their sins at the latest in the spirit world), and C) don't get unsealed which is possible but requires approval from at least a stake president level. Maybe higher. Also, the chatter was wrong about Outer Darkness. Only people who commit the "unforgivable sin" of denying the holy ghost with a perfect knowledge of god's existence will go there.

    i was raised mormon, and a lot of the issues with the lds church can be answered just by doing research on the church, but church authorities go out of their way to cover it up. like there are "church history" classes at BYU and sunday school, but they mainly focus on joseph smith and deliberately avoid topics like emma smith's (joseph's wife) objections to polygamy or brigham young's violent racism. the black priesthood/temple ban, for instance, was not of god (whether you believe in god or not). it was purely brigham young's racism. there are historical records of him saying slavery was a "divine institution" and campaigning to make utah a slave state. almost 100 years later, then-president of the church ezra t. benson said in a general conference talk that the black civil rights movement was a "communist plot" to destroy america. the church teaches that its presidents are infallible "men of god," but history has proven otherwise. leaving all these byu students doing mental gymnastics to justify objectively cruel church teachings under the guise of divine authority.

    The "it can be both" takes on whether you can choose to be gay are insane. Like what? do they really think people are like "I'm not gay but I'm gonna make myself gay, so I can be just like the natural gays"? The fuck?

    These people have no original or critical thoughts. A lot of faith believers say atheists have no moral compass without God, but these people base their morals on the state or elders. They'll lack empathy the second they're told it's okay to.

    as someone who was raised in the church, the Family Proclimation has always annoyed me, even before I started having a gender identity crisis. Its all, "Your duty as a woman is to have kids and nothing else.'' And then it says that "gender is a super important characteristic but only if you're cis and follow every gender norm ever." As a 'woman' in the church, saying I dont want to get married or have kids (with a man at least) I genuinely feel judged and hated by the leaders of the church.

    Went to a young earth creationist baptist school for jr high, Vehemently against the teaching of evolution but they DID teach adaptation. I remember in one class learning about this species of moth that adapted during the industrial revolution to better camouflage itself on soot covered walls. I ask "Isn't this evolution?" and got sent home.

    @@mini8964 It’s kinda confusing honestly. The church doesn’t want people to be actually marrying multiple wives. You can only have one legal lawful wife… But in the temple where people are sealed and married into the temple, a man can be sealed to multiple women. (women can only be sealed to one man) So in the afterlife they have multiple wives just not this life. I guess that’s the best way i could explain it lol it’s wild

    Wow. As a "mormon" (we call ourselves "Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints now") I had heard about the church not allowing black people to hold the highest level of priesthood. Only today, after doing research to find the sources these wonderful activists mentioned did I learn: 1. that extended to the entirety of the priesthood. 2. the ban lasted 100 years. 3. Brigham Young, a heroic figure in our church literature even today, was an avid racist and said that if the church ever let black people or asian people (cuz they have some degree of darker skin tone and thus mingled with "the negroes") that the church "must go to destruction." (Here is a link to the page. Scroll to the bottom then count 6 paragraphs up and you'll be able to read it there.I just read most of the document and he says some ludicrous things. Definitely not what MY god believes in. ) QUOTE: Let this Church which is called the kingdom of God on the earth; we will sommons the first presidency, the twelve, the high counsel, the Bishoprick, and all the elders of Isreal, suppose we summons them to apear here, and here declare that it is right to mingle our seed, with the black race of Cain, that they shall come in with with us and be pertakers with us of all the blessings God has given to us. On that very day, and hour we should do so, the preisthood is taken from this Church and kingdom and God leaves us to our fate. The moment we consent to mingle with the seed of Cain the Church must go to desstruction,-we should receive the curse which has been placed upon the seed of Cain, and never more be numbered with the children of Adam who are heirs to the preisthood untill that curse be removed. -www.mrm.org/topicsdocuments-speechesbrigham-youngs-1852-speech-slavery Now this all begs the question: If a prophet of this church which declares itself to be true, and this prophet was ordained and even today represented as one of the more impressive prophets and viewed as definitely what he said was true, then when that prophet says that allowing blacks and asains into the church would mean our church would lose its status with God and that the priesthood in the church would be stripped away, yet the same church over 100 years later said the priesthood for blacks is now okay, when was the church untrue. Because it was either untrue then or untrue now. BTW: For anyone wondering NO, this is not taught in the church. We are most certainly not taught thiss version of history of our church's origin, (the full one) just like we are mostly not taught unless someone brings it up that joseph smith had ~40 wives (more than one everyday of the week) and same with Brigham young and others who had multiples.

    That last dude reminds me of my dad a little. My dad isn’t Mormon or anything, but if you saw him you’d probably assume Trump voter. But he’s a libby kinda centrist and like a little weird boomerish (he’s early gen X) but has surprisingly decent takes. Says abortion is up to the woman making the decision, made fun of Representative Tim Murphy (we’re in Pennsylvania) and called him a hypocrite when he resigned when he came out he tried to pressure his mistress into an abortion as a pro-life politician, and listens to Eminem but skips the domestic violence songs. I’m super glad he’s like that honestly because as a lesbian I feel safe around him and grateful for him.
