Some Days in the life of a Plein Air Painter in Scotland ✶ summer
Ойын-сауық
It's already been a busy summer full of events and social obligations, but I'm doing my best to maintain a good amount of plein air painting in my schedule. It's my favorite way to enjoy the summer months in Scotland. I prioritize painting outside to study nature and find peace. I compiled some recent excursions and hope you enjoy this 'day in the life' type video of a plein air paintiner in Scotland! #gouache #pleinair #watercolor

I love these type of videos you do, taking us to your group plein air meetings, seeing the different locations (beautiful) and how the others are set up and their "takes" of the views. I am all set up now for painting outside but just at that awkward stage of getting started, feeling comfortable with it, finding the groove, etc. Sarah, you are so inspiring! Thank you!
„Paint us, Sarah“, the rocks were calling, „paint us!“ 😀
I like how you attached your view finder to your easel. Great idea!
I've enjoyed your journey through the rocky landscapes, colorful boats, and architecture. I love to watch you paint.
It is very kind of you to share some of your plein air painting time with us. And I thank you for sharing some very stunning painting sites from your beautiful Scotland as well. I would love to visit there again one day. (My husband and I biked around some of Europe in 1985 and got to experience a baby bit of Scotland & loved every minute of it.) As we lived in Alaska for many years I love boats/docks/water…really love your boat and rock paintings.😊
Lovely, interesting, inspiring and peaceful. Thank you for taking us along.
I live on southern Vancouver Island in Canada. I think you would love painting here! Our coastline is heavily forested (as I believe Scotland once was?) and the rock formations and moss- and lichen-scapes are so beautiful and interesting, much like those in your videos. My city has more mossy oak trees than you could ever paint! I end up with a phone full of pictures of rocks and tree bark. If you're ever looking for a destination painting trip, look us up! 😊

I've heard it's absolutely gorgeous there! But..do you have bears and predators? That was my big fear in Colorado, I could never fully relax

There are bears and cougars on the island, but encounters are rare. I guess it depends if you're camping and how remote you are. If you're hanging out in the well-frequented coastal parks or towns to paint, I don't think you have much to worry about. And we have predators you want to see, like orcas, seals, and bald eagles!
No matter the style, urban, etc. your painting is awesome and inspiring!

Excellent video and paintings - 50 sleeps until I'm back in Scotland and I'm definitely going to be bringing 10% clothes and 90% art supplies :)
Thanks so much, Sarah! I love your work and your videos, same for the ones from your other Channel about Scotland. Me and my Family are huge Fans of this beautiful country. Special thanks for painting the Carlton Hotel, this was our stay in Scotland last autumn 😊. Greetings from Germany!
LOVE hearing the crashing waves🥰
I love the tree painting! Thank you for sharing your life as a plein air artist.
Very inspirational Sarah! And now that I have had a little taste of Scotland and such an awesome experience painting with you in person, I see these videos from a new perspective! I will return to Scotland and in large part because of you, your videos, art posts, and most of all- your in person kind, patient, and helpful teaching!!!
Oh I did enjoy this. thanks for taking us along.
Just LOVE the architecture..you are entitled to ...in Scotland...and love how your rendition evolved...you are an AMAZING draughtsman/person...you just plop in those shapes...so perfectly in proportion...and then POOF...lovely gouache/watercolour added in ...after your sketch....gives a graphic...urban sketcher vibe to me...thanks for showing us all...what you have been up to...and about at!...Janis

Hi Sarah! Your videos are always like a short holiday in Scotland. Thanks for letting us share the beautiful scenery and your talented painting. What is this portable easle (or whatever you call it)? Could it be also used for Watercolour? I always try to find the most compact and practical gear. Love from Bavaria! Geli

Thank you for taking us to your paint a long group🥰 Love all the boats!

I love your paintings. I really enjoyed your scenery and the art work that resulted. Thank you for taking me along.
Lovely and relaxing video. I learned a lot just from watching. Easier for me to pick up techniques and ideas just observing you then it is to actually have someone tell me what they’re doing. So this was a perfect video for me.
As usual, an excellent video! I just wanted to say Sarah that I love the brushes that I’m getting in the kits every month. I tried gouache once back in about 1991 and hated it. I didn’t realize it was because of the brushes. It’s so much more fun now. thank you for the wonderful brushes and wonderful kits to work with. Have a lovely week.☮️❤️🙏

Hullo Sarah, Well it is easy to see your inspiration is Scotland! I wish to one day go to Shetland! I know that is NOT Scotland but it is so very close ! Thanks for taking us along on your adventures. Please be safe and see ya next video!
Hope you get to go out on one of those "awesome" boats for a sail/ride...feel what it is like to actually BE IN A BOAT AT SEA...and let us know...how you like it...and how it made your boat paintings different...after..."TRAVELLING" IN THAT BOAT FOR A FEW HOURS!!! Happy Solstice to you Sarah...Janis in the Yukon...north of 60...
I really want to paint those rocks and have so many photos I took and now I know how I can approach them. Thanks!
I live on the west coast of Scotland 🏴 we have a small harbour and so many places to paint this inspired me so much ! I would absolutely love to see all the beautiful coastlines we have here . Honestly our country is such a magical place when you take the time to go see places . Thanks for another great vlog ! Always learn something here ❤
You are such an inspiration to me, darling
Hi Sarah. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad). It's been a while since I posted in your YT channel due to some health issues, but I always watch your vids, they are extremely inspiring. So much so that I used to only paint in Watercolor on "Plein Air" but you've inspired me to also use my Gouache and, even though it's different and requires somewhat of a learning curve, it's a wonderful medium for plain air and urban sketching. Due to my work life, I've traveled extensively throughout the World for over 25 years (most of Western Europe, including the UK, and a bit of Eastern Europe, some countries in North Africa and Dubai, Latin America, and the US and Canada), but I've never been to Scotland nor Ireland, which are both in my bucket list, as well as Asia and Australia, though I'm not sure I'll ever be able to visit them anymore. So, your videos take me there in a way and doing what I most love... Art & Photography. So... Thank you very much! Your vids take me there virtually and I enjoy them very much! Hope the best for you and help me keep on discovering! Cheers from Sunny Spain! 😁👍😎✌

loved everything about this video. the tree is awesome,
Love all your sketches and paintings not to mention the fabulous locations you took me to. Great video once again Sarah and thanks for the tips, great idea using the red acetate one which I am certainly going to employ.
I'm wanting more Phil in the videos. What did the good lady say????!!!!! Summer in Scotland is a bit like summer in Tassie; a mixed bag...😂. I loved watching you make those scratchy marks on the tree at the end, perfect.

Beautiful video and paintings! So inspiring! Thanks for sharing!
I love to watch you paint. I’m studying oil and digital - yes both at the same time. Our daughter will be moving to Glasgow hopefully before Christmas as she is marrying a Scotsman. My husband and I will move there in the few years, depending on when the babies come and we’re ready. So where are you? I hope you don’t mind me asking …
Thank you Sarah! I love these beautiful paintings, I am still learning to paint mainly watercolour. I do have some gouache but haven’t used it very much. I love your second rock painting, colours are beautiful. In my sketchbook I have a beach scene with rocks underway in watercolour, I think I will try a second one in gouache. I live close to the beach in Sunshine Coast Queensland Australia. Thank you again, so incredibly inspiring!

Hello from Dunedin FL
Lovely and inspiring.
Beautiful paintings thank you for sharing
Please will you do a video where you talk about the best brands for dried gouache, by colour? I think that lots of colours could be cheaper gouache, but a lot of darker colours tend to dry more cracked and brittle. I'm looking for the most economical way to make a really banging dried gouache palette that isn't crumbling to pieces - I don't want to buy ALL Daniel Smith/Schmincke Horadam because it's expensive. Which colours is it essential to splash out on in a dried palette, and which ones are really good even in the cheaper brands? Thanks so much! Big fan of your channel
Sarah I loved this video, very inspiring, makes me want to get out there and do it !!
I’ve been following you for quite a while, and absolutely love your work. Your videos are informative and fun. What is that palette that you are using when you painted the ‘relaxing tree’? It’s different from the Portable Painter.

Just like the others, I love going on your plein air trips with you and seeing how you create on the spot. I found a plein air group here in Hawaii, largely because I saw how much fun you had and how inspiring it was to paint by the ocean, hearing the sounds of the waves and birds. Oh, and also getting stung by tropical fire ants last week when I was so enamored with the view instead of where I was standing! But that is a small price for the joy of painting outside!
I really want to paint those rocks and have so many photos I took and now I know how I can approach them. Thanks!
