Combining WATERCOLOR & GOUACHE forest painting ✶ Long Sketchbook & Chat Session

Ойын-сауық

I'm back with another long, chatty (and hopefully relaxing) sketchbook session! Today I am combining watercolor and gouache to paint a forest scene that fills two pages in my sketchbook. I love combining watercolor and gouache because they play nicely together and it's a very relaxing process to me. In this session I'll explain what I'm doing but also talk about a bunch of other random stuff. #gouache
Let's be sketch buddies for an hour!

Awesome as always Sarah! It was great to watch and listen to you again while I inked a drawing myself... just as you talked about persevering through the "ugly stage", I was at that moment in mine so you helped me get over it too! Thanks so much!

Hullo Sarah, well you got me again! I saw the longer “canvas” and thought you might be working larger, nope. I have experienced that feeling of painting in some “other artists style” and will tell myself to relax and just keep working and I am most likely to emerge in the final painting. I most want to paint like my Gran, she was so responsible for my early development and I know that I never saw all of her paintings in progress, but I never saw her paintings go through that “ugly stage” I honestly thought I was just not good enough to keep painting. I did find others who were struggling with the ugly stage in their artworks and felt not so alone or horrible of a painter! I have created my own style and it does look similar to hers, yet her paintings have a delicacy that mine do not. Well not all of my work! Thank you for sharing another quite lovely painting experience with your viewers.

As you were talking about struggles with tonal contrast Nathan Fowkes came to mind. He comes across as such an unafraid artist but his book has confessions of the terrors of doing live demos not working out, which was a bit of a revelation. No other artist I follow gives such life to trees and foliage as you. Your trees remind me of how I saw trees in childhood, trees with character and personality and that possibly chat to each other when people aren’t around ☺️

Thank you Hayley! I know that every artist has their struggles and fears. From the outside they might seem really confident, but if you get to know them you see they are only human! (though I still call Nathan my art god! lol)

Wonderful video. I love it. This style is what I want to achieve and have chosen gouache with watercolor glazing. I’m experimenting with homemade gesso since I want to paint on stretched canvas and prepared wood panels. I love the velvety texture of gouache. I’m also experimenting with a base layer of soft chalk misted with alcohol.

I'm elderly now and think I could swing it since I used to do acrylics back in my 20s. I never heard of Gouache back then! I know what you mean about wondering how you will achieve what you are going for in the middle of a painting. You can try doing a few studies where you copy an artist’s work as closely as possible for the first 2 or 3, then do a few more where you let yourself deviate - that might help you retain the bits that you like and work them into your own style. I think all artists copy bits and pieces from other artists :)

Heavens, that IS the Fangorn forest, moss and lichens (sp?) and everything! Our local forest park is too manicured for my liking, but then again, you don't want to venture into huorns...😃 I liked that you specified in the beginning of the episode that it is not a tutorial and therefore should not be copied, sometimes it's hard to understand whether one can try and chug along in the back sit ( aka copy) or not. So ,greatly appreciated! 👍 Interesting choice of composition- so the viewer has to decide, which path to take? Sunny one or dark and mysterious? And that backlit trunk of a tree!!! 😍 I am in the middle earth 😂, second week now, but when I return, I have an unfinished business with one of my gouache sketches, I didn't have time to finish it at the time and now I see that it has some.. inaccuracies, shall we say, also, so if you still reading this 🤣, would you suggest to try and finish it and correct mistakes or just start anew? Tenuous but its a play on words saying tonightious because that ringing in your ears after leaving loud gigs , concerts or nightclubs , well anything that coukd have been that bit to loud that you may have done some damage to your hearing . Hence the "tonightious" as it should not last in to the next day . If you are getting tenuous just randomly, might be a idea to chat to your doctor about having your hearing tested and check that you have no damage to your ear drums or any infections on its way . If you have been exposed to loud noises regularly currently or even in the past like been a musiso or DJ and regularly had to be right next to amps ,fold backs and drummers or even worked with industrial machinery .. yeah get that looked into. Got to look after your hearing but lol , the music in your background at times just sounds like high pitched diffent squeals . I have stupidly sensitive hearing and some notes just plain out just hurt me and i thought i had some sort of hearing damage, turns out i nothing wrong with my ears . Its more the case the sound getting to my brain was the problem.. Get you ears looked in too.

If someone is copying artwork just for practice and not for profit and they give in the artist recognition why is this offensive
