Solving the Motorcycle Keychain Problem that Barely Exists

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The FortNine Premium Leather Keywrap keeps those useless non-motorcycle keys wrapped up! No more chipped paint around your ignition, no more annoying rattling sounds while you ride. Pair it with a FortNine neck gaiter to spot a fellow FortNiner at your next motorcycle meetup.

It drives me crazy and I have a naked bike plus a Motokom noise-canceling headset which is fantastic for wind and exhausts (and I really mean that, best I've ever used, get one. I never knew you could hear the full dynamic range of music and clear vocals at 100kph with the visor down), but it is not so good for rattles or sirens (which is probably a feature but idk). I leave my keys in the bike shed though and the problem is solved. Your keys are only for around your house and sheds anyway.

I started keeping my house keys separate before I even started riding since I didn't want too much weight on the key in the car. Since then, I've always kept them separate regardless of how many cars and bikes I've owned at any given time. Any time I leave the house, I grab my house keys + whatever vehicle I'm taking. My motorbike key just has the key + an airtag in a leather holder, so I don't run into this problem at all.

We're accepting submissions below. Also, we tried two types of rubber O-rings. There's a split ring and a solid ring. The former is easier to move around and the latter is less likely to fall off. Update - Just received my key wrap today. I'm happy with it as it will suit my needs just fine. A word of caution though, this wrap is only large enough to hold 3 or 4 medium sized bare keys. If any of your keys are clad in plastic or rubber, as many dealer provided keys are, you'll only get that key and one other to fit somewhat tightly in the wrap. In my case I have a Honda key, luggage key and house key on my key ring the. The Honda key has a thick plastic cladding on it so it barely fits on its own. So this really won't work with a factory key, but I can easily get 3 bare keys to fit with no problems. Just need to have an uncladded ignition key made and I'll be all set.

Nice design. Definitely solving a real problem. Looks good. Two small issues, potentially: (i) the metal stud might still scratch the trip clamp, unless you insert the key correct side up, which is the problem you're trying to solve and (ii) the fixed dimensions of the leather patch means no more than x number of keys can be accommodated, including possibly not the 6 or 8 keys you mentioned.

One idea, you could use velcro instead of a button, which would allow you to cinch the keys tight regardless of how many keys you have or the stretch of the leather as it breaks in. This would also allow you to remove the rubber O-rings for better space management. Another idea, is to have an elastic banded loop that attaches half way down the leather strip. When the keys are rolled inside, the elastic ring can be looped over the leather wrapped keys, also keeping them under tension so you don't need the O-rings.

  • @equalizer4633

    @equalizer4633

Except velcro doesn't grab well in this design, there's outward tension because the leather wants to unfold. And velcro wears out, so then its useless. Also it doesn't fit the robust design and is difficult to open with one hand. same with an elastic ring.

Another easy solution is using 2mm thick dynema cord, or anything else equally robust and thick to tie a loop in. Then sliding the long end through the keys to make a cow hitch, you cinch the keys together. Then you can slide the knot through the leather's keyring hole, rest the keys inside, and let it be loose. The cow hitch will keep the keys tight together, and the excess coradage can be used as a lanyard.

It is more costly though but I use it for my everyday keys. My motorcycles have always had their own dedicated soft key chains with their respective keys being the only ones attached to it.

Nice little invention! Solving a nearly non-existent problem, love it! After "losing" my stand-alone key by dropping it (finally finding it in the fork-guards after disassembling half the bike) I made a semi-braided paracord loop with plenty of knots to increase it's footprint, plus no rattling or scratches. I can feel it with gloves on and in a pants pocket, and I used paracord with reflective fibers woven in so if I drop it in the dark a sweep with a flashlight or headlamp will hopefully reveal it quickly. I have a mini carabiner on the waist adjuster of my jacket to hold it which I can get to without looking while I'm doing the helmet/glove dance. These chipped keys are good and bad, and losing one is bad on all sorts of levels.

I've seen plenty of ignitions (scooter, motorcycle, car) ruined by the weight of additional keys. I've seen keys damaged from getting caught in the headstock. I've seen people lose entire keyrings from the bike key ejecting from a loose barrel whilst riding! I also HATE the sound of rattles! So, I keep my bike key on its own giant fabric keyring which has "The Key To Happiness" stitched on it! It negates all the other issues whilst being extremely easy to find in your riding pants or bag whilst wearing gloves - easy to pick up off the floor when you drop it too! However, I could be tempted tp buy one of these and tidy up my main keychain which somehow jingles like Santa's sleigh in my work pants 😂

I have definitely thought of this, especially on some special editions that have numbered plaques on the triple clamp. I can't stand having vehicle keys on the same loop as all my other keys, so my other keys live together in my pocket on a loop, and each vehicle gets a leather logo attached to its key. I just bring one key along, the spare stays at home so it can't get lost and I know where it is when I need it. Simple, no jingling, no scratches. This looks like a good solution for someone that likes having their keys together.

On a related note regarding an extremely high tech, grotesquely expensive solution to this problem is keyless ignition. I'd love to hear your thoughts on this in a future video. I've always been very adverse to buying a bike with this tech despite the added security against theft it seems to add. This year I bought my first bike with keyless and brought it in for a repair. When picking it up a service aide came from the back, rolling my bike outside the shop with the display active. I hopped on and drove off only to find a warning code come on after 10 minutes stating, "key out of range" displayed on my information panel. With a sick feeling I remembered afresh this new technology not present for me for the past 50+ years. I thought, "Not so bad. I just have the inconvenience of driving back to the shop". Not so! The key was not to be found. The tech who brought out my bike suggested the key might have been left by the mechanic in the slot of the tail section that removes the rear pillion. "Why in hell would he do that?" I said. Everybody looked around on the ground for some time and with great care. Needless to say I did not turn off my bike. I retraced my path at very slow speed which was probably just the opposite of what my Super Duke was designed to do. I even pulled over on the shoulder of the freeway and walked back 1/2 to 3/4 mile from where the warning first appeared, looking for the discarded key on a very busy and, in this perspective, threatening road. I again returned to the shop and the staff conferred with the mechanic who stated he left the key on top of the tank in a slotted area just below the triple clamp. The tech who brought out the bike said he never saw it. Me, do'h, was totally oblivious due to this new habit. The owner of the establishment groaned stating the new key would cost the shop $400 (it's a mom & pop business). I felt horrible regardless of the cost, whatever it truly is. I'll split the price and pay half, my call on this, and in the future take total responsibility which it really it is. But so expensive a direction to which manufacturers have gone! As a young man a key replacement blank cost me about thirty-five cents! K! Lastly the tech said to me, :"You do have your valet key and card?" I got a really sick feeling. I had never thought about that since bringing the bike home approximately 6 months ago. I didn't know. As it turned out the tech drove me home to check and I found the key and the plastic card with the duplication code in my safe. Afterwards it was back to the dealership for a third time to order the new key. I'm still waiting for it and am very anxious regarding loosing this key, no longer nice, warm and safe in the safe.

I have a '64 Harley, which has no starter or even a battery since it is kick-start only. The security is the starting ritual you must intimately know to get the thing started at all, despite not having a key. Getting the crankshaft just right before kicking, getting the choke just right, priming the carb bowl just right without flooding, twisting the throttle just right at the same time as kicking, kicking hard enough not to have the bike kick you back and break your leg... A lost art. I think a keyed system is actually easier to steal.

Why split the channel at all? If you have enough non-motorcyle(ish) content for another channel, just increase the number of videos you put out each week on this channel. Throw them all right here, motorcycle stuff and everything else. The titles tell us what the videos are about, and we’ll watch them (or not) based on our individual interests. It’s all Fortnine, after all. The important thing for me is that you keep the same high quality in both production and personnel to keep the entertainment and information values on the top shelf where they are right now. And the humor. Keep the humor, like a condom on a key ring. Your humor is priceless.

My primary keychain (used) to have a copy of the moto keys and car keys (multiple units of each format). This setup is super great because the ignition key in use is of zero bother in any way, ever, and I have spares that -never- leave my pocket, so if I lock my car key in at the grocery, I have a spare.... etc. cheers.

Clever idea, well executed, but somewhat limited. I use a very small key ring through the key, and hang it on a carabiner that holds the rest of the keys and goes in the pocket of my riding jacket or Aerostich. It takes very little effort to take the ignition key off the carabiner and put it back on when not in use. The very small key ring does not contact the triple clamp. This also allows the motorcycyle to remain running while opening the top box (separate Givi key, which will not conveniently fit in the F9 leather thingy) to change to warmer gloves. A lot less than $29.00 plus shipping and sales tax. (ouch!) To each his own.
