Solving Equations using Cross Multiplication | Shortcut Method | Eat Pi

In this video, I teach you 2 methods to solve for equivalent fractions with variables. The first method is by cross multiplying and the second (faster) method is by multiplying straight across.
There's a Pre-Algebra playlist attached at the end of the video if you need help with any other topics.

hey not sure if you comment on old videos but i want to know how you can make x/34=3/4 but with the linear method that you showed as an alternative for big numbers thats also quicker

@abelincolnabelincoln I always get notified of any comments on any video so I'm always around 😆 The 'linear' method wouldn't be ideal for your example because you're given 2 denominators, 34 and 4, but they don't fit into each other evenly. So it'll require a couple extra steps to solve it. First, to get from 4 to 34, you have to multiply by 8.5 The way you figure that out is just divide the big number by the small number: 34÷4 = 8.5 So to get from 4 to 34, we need to multiply by 8.5, so that means we need to multiply by 8.5 on the top also. 8.5 x 3 = 25.5 So X = 25.5 So when you have to 2 numbers that don't fit evenly in each other (like in your example), cross multiplication would definitely be preferable: x/34 = 3/4 4•x = 34•3 4x = 102 x = 25.5 So same answer either way but cross multiplication would still be preferable imo 👍

@@Eat_Pi oh! thank you a lot for responding, yes i did eventually just use the crossing method either way, but thank you for showing me how to bypass that error!

I was thinking about dividing 15/20 by 2.5 would that be ok too?

Hmmm... I'm not really sure where you're getting 2.5 from? But there is another way to solve these. Lets start at the beginning: x/8 = 15/20 Remember, in algebra, we want to isolate the variable. In order to isolate x here, we need to get rid of the 8 in the denominator. To do that, we can multiply by 8. But remember, what you do to 1 side of the equation, you have to do to the other side also. So we need to multiply both sides by 8 like this: 8*(x/8) = 8*(15/20) On the left side, there is now an 8 in the numerator and denominator, so they cancel each other out and we're just left with the variable x. On the right side, to multiply fractions, just multiply straight across. On top 8*15 = 120 and in the denominator we just have 20. So all that's left is: x = 120/20 Simplifying, the answer is: x = 6 Hope that clears it up 👍

Yeah you could definitely multiply by 12 on both sides, that would work too 👍 That's just another method though. Here I was specifically covering cross multiplication but the nice thing about math is there's more than one way to solve problems 😃
