    The Dylan story is so fucked when you realize how much of a coward his dad is that he murdered his own son because his (the dad's) own disgusting behavior. Even more when the BOYS were the ones who were ashamed of everything and they're just kids. And the people 'vouching' for Sophie's killer made me roll my eyes so far back. "He may have murdered someone but what about his hugs???" He murdered someone. HE *MURDERED* SOMEONE. The last thing we should be concerned about is a murderer being able to get hugs. I know that KZread’s doing this to appear family friendly to advertisers but I for one don’t want anyone to have to relive their trauma when they don’t expect it.

And why not censor all letters, and numbers, in case kidnapped victims saw certain symbols painted on walls? Look, I'm not trying to be insensitive, I'm just saying it reaches a point where that level of "protection" isn't feasible. I'm a victim of rape and child sexual abuse, and these are clinical terms. We have to be able to use them. Even if censors whittle them down to acronyms, we still know what they're standing for. So, I really don't get it...such an overcorrection.

    I mean, I hear what you’re saying, but I’m a little conflicted about the brother. Knowing what he knew, he not only didn’t go out there with him, he then sent Dylan the pictures to confront his father a 2nd time; again, alone. He’s not guilty of murder, but I’d argue he did have a part to play in his brother’s death. If I were him, I’d feel guilty beyond belief.

    As someone who was forced by the courts to stay with my abusive mother against my will, Dylan’s story hits really close to home. That constant feeling of unease with one of the people you should trust the most, the dread of going, the arguments where they talk shit about the parent who supported and loved you more than the entire world… and he would’ve been just a year older than me if he was still here… I hate that it’s such a common story.

    I agree. I’m German-American, but my church often donates to Pine Ridge or helps with building projects there, and once, my car broke down on the reservation during a vacation trip (I had gone through there to see the sights/wildlife, and the poor road infrastructure and lack of funding in the area at least partially caused the problem). It was very isolated there, but several locals helped me to figure out what was wrong and where I could buy what I needed to top off the car fluids and rig up a fix until I could get back to Minnesota. They were kind, open people doing their best in difficult living conditions. I feel angry that isolation, poverty, and poor law enforcement causes so much loss and pain to these unique communities. I had this happen with my abusive father after he served his sentence in jail after a very messy divorce when I was 4yo. when I turned 7 I had to start meetings with him every other weekend and wow what a surprise the abuse continued and it was worst for me and my brother. my sister didn't get fully away from it either, when my brother turned 16 he decided to fully stop meeting him, which saved him from what me and my sister had to go through. he decided to take us to a country a 5h plane flight away from our home country and there while we had to be with him for months our mother tried to fight to get us back every time he told the cps that he had rights to be with his children and even though we said we didn't want to go, we couldn't decide it ourselves which led to many years of abuse and trauma, I'm glad my older sister never left me with him alone and suffered the extra 2 years to get out of that hell together. I could have been in a similar place as the last case Lazy covered. that system is cruel and horrifying all around the globe and many, many parents should never be able to see their kids again.

    The whole idea of "parental rights" is backwards. Children have rights, parents have responsibilities, but the law tries to assign responsibility for the feelings of the parents onto the child. If a child wants to visit a parent, they should be allowed to. If they really don't want to, they shouldn't be forced. Parental Alienation (one parent negatively affecting a child's perception of the other parent) is real and unfortunately happens too frequently. It is a form of abuse in itself. But forcing a child into a situation that terrifies them isn't the answer, supervised visitation is.

    I really liked that judge's response in Sophie Sergie's case because it was exactly what I was thinking. Sophie was condemned to an eternal sentence by Steven Downs, one where she never gets to experience anything ever again. So forgive me if I find it difficult to have sympathy over the fact that he won't get to experience freedom anymore for what he did to her. I swear, the nerve of some of these defense lawyers. Also, the Dylan Redwine case annoys me so much because Dylan repeatedly said he didn't want to go stay with his father because he knew what a monster he was. I hate how frequently the law doesn't listen to children and forces them to be isolated with their abusers. It's enraging how kids are so often treated like second class citizens in society; I understand that they can't make certain decisions for themselves and that parental rights are important but it's just so incredibly frustrating how many cases I've seen of young boys and girls who end up getting killed by their mothers and/or fathers despite there being numerous red flags.

  • @Pushing_Pixels

    @Pushing_Pixels

    5 ай бұрын

    I agree about the judge's response. Steven had already enjoyed the freedom he might've otherwise received at the end of a lengthy sentence. He used it in advance, so there's no reason to even consider whether his sentence will take up the rest of his life. If anything, the years he evaded justice should be added to his minimum. With Dylan, I'm not sure that "parental rights" are that important at all. I think parents should be framed as having responsibilities while children's rights should be paramount. They should be able to veto overnight stays. By forcing a child to stay with a parent they don't feel comfortable around, they are making the child responsible for the parent's feelings. That's an absurd thing to do. Yet courts treat children like they are the joint property of the parents, instead of a joint responsibility. I think children should be able to limit contact to supervised visitation, if they choose. Dylan was 13, if I remember correctly. At that age they should be able to choose whether they have any contact at all.

    Just one correction: Polygraphs are no more accurate than guesswork. They don't measure LIES, they measure stress, which may come from any number of sources in response to a question, not just guilt. If they were "eighty to ninety percent accurate" then they wouldn't be banned worldwide (at least as far as I know, there may be a country SOMEWHERE that allows them as "evidence"). And the thing is, if someone even FEELS guilty for someone's death (like a child being told to walk to school and getting kidnapped on the way) then that guilt alone could skew polygraph results to make the person look to be deceitful. Just being shocked by the question can be enough. And the results are so subjective that there is no consistency between most readings.

If you are arrested for it, then your attorney can have you out in no time and you will be able to explain to the courts why you did what you did in order to protect your child(ren). In most states, Dylan was old enough to tell a Judge why he no longer wanted to see his "father," and given the photographs, I highly doubt that he would have even been allowed to go to visit him even if he wanted to. Sadly, I don't believe that Dylan or his brother ever told anyone else about the photographs until it was too late. 😢 They were just kids and they had no idea what to do, let alone what their "father" was truly capable of doing. Happy 25th birthday in heaven, Dylan. Mark is an absolutely vile human being and neither his kids nor his ex-partners deserved him in their lives. And those lawyers defending Steven were just so ridiculous. He murdered and SA'd an innocent girl, he deserves to be behind bars and I doubt his family would miss him if they knew what he did. I hope the families of both victims are doing okay. Rest in peace, Sophie and Dylan ❤

    I'm a Custodian at a dorm. There is literally no security in dorms. Most have a card slide to get into. But students literally wait for someone else to slide their card to get in. And most the time. Nobody stops them. They just assume you live there and forgot your card and let you in. Other students will slip in and vandalise the dorms or obviously in some cases much worse.

    If a kid is petrified to be alone with a parent, they should be able to refuse no matter their age; there is a reason they are scared of that parent. It is really horrible that courts don't listen to kids. If they are telling you something doesn't feel right, trust them.

    Steven had raped Sophie. She might not have known him personally but he lived in the dorms. Had he left her alive, he would probably have been caught because she could provide a description and possibly even his name. I suspect he didn't immediately attack her, he probably saw her smoking and asked for a cigarette. Possibly exchanged pleasantries and names. His motive? So fearful he would be arrested for rape...that he killed her.

    The problem with letting kids "decide" if they wanna see their parent is that alot of the time one will poison the other against them especially when they spend most of their lives hearing all the trash talk on the other side Obviously in this case it would have been better if they could choose but how many other good ppl and parents would be screwed out of building a relationship with their child because of the toxicity of the one Hell look at gypsy rose as an example her mother had full custody and kept her daughter from her father even tho he wanted a relationship and was Obviously a much better person than the mother

    It's pretty pathetic when brutal murderers ask for leniency. I kind of understand if there was an accident or something similar... But asking for someone to show you mercy after you did something so bad to someone who has done nothing to you, well, it just shows that you are not remorseful in any way shape or form. These poor kids... I feel for them and hope they have better fortune in the afterlife.
