Thanks for this. I was able to solve the issue using this guide though my problem was a bit different so wanted to add some additional information. For me the disc drive would not eject or accept a disc. When I removed the ribbon cable and reinserted the PS4 would beep but not hard restart as described in this video. I was going to try getting a new ribbon but decided to check the ribbon attachment on the underside of the power board first. As I was removing the power board as described in the linked video, I noticed that the cable giving power to the disc drive (the cable just below the optic ribbon cable) was noticeably loose so I reinserted it fully and all my issues went away. I noticed some people commented they had the same issue with the disc drive not accepting/ejecting discs so thought I’d let everyone know how it was solved on my PS4.

Hey can i do all those steps but inatead of initializing my ps(step 7) can i just do step 3 as in just normally update ps4 via usb?

Please note with the primary drive cable (the one with the pull tab on the cable) you do not want to tug or twist the cable out. The metal tab on the top of the connector presses down to allow the two plastic fins to release and you should be able to pull it straight out with no effort. I've had many customers try to yank that cable out and they have the tabs broken off inside the connector and they are impossible/difficult to remove.

I did this and I’m still getting that error code. Old HHD failed and I put in a new one. It won’t complete anything in safe mode. Throws different errors for each one. What did I do wrong?

John Smith you are awesome! Was about to sell the PS4 to the pawn shop because of this issue. Not only did it didn't want to update but also the Power Button wasn't working. Managed to fix both Problems in under 5 mins, all i did was plug in all Ribbons in all the way and PS4 now works like a charm! Kudos! This video should have more likes & less dislikes.

The main ribbon that you pointed out was the issue. It was a tiny bit not noticably disconnected, just pushed it in & dude you are a life saving nerd hehe

For the 7.50 2020 update here is a fix for the 1001a model if you tried every easy fix and are at your wits end. The issue is most likely a broken ribbon connector between bd-rom and motherboard. I believe the issue affects people who have opened their ps4 for cleaning or fixing another issue. When improperly removing the ribbon cable connecting the bd-rom to the motherboard, they broke the outer pin on the bd-rom slot. You will know that is the case if the small ears/tabs are broken. Most people report no issue after replacing the connector. But before ordering a replacement, try flipping the connector, it might bypass the issue; that means connecting the motherboard male to the bd-rom female and bd-rom male to motherboard female. You will also have to rebend it to fit this new position and use some tape to hold it in place if, after rebending it, it has a hard time staying connected on the motherboard side due to having broken ears. After that, download the update in a USB stick and install in safe mode. I also used the 1 gig version of the update; not sure if that made any difference. Also the proper way to remove that ribbon is by pushing on the small metal tab on the connector. For those who don't have a fix, fuse f6202 was blown on mine. None of the cable methods worked. I threw a blob of solder over the fuse to bypass it and it's working again after a year! Do this at your own risk or better yet replace the fuse. It's a tiny one beside the renases chip on the mainboard (ps4 slim)

Everyone who said it's the disc drive is kind of wrong. The update does check to see if the hardware is functioning properly and if not itll give this error. I have tried 5 brand new drives and it still gives this error. It's something else too

Taylor its the silver ribbon cable running from under the powersupply into the disc drive it may be damaged replace it

This concept worked for me as well for 8.50 version...My ps4 disc drive is unusable and idk the reason. All i did was unplug and plug in again that disc drive ribbon flex cable while downloading update in safe mode ..This video saved my 7yo Ps4 once again 😁Ty

@@omarsemeda1364 if you ever tried to open youre ps4 completely you might have damaged some parts accidentally ..in my case while putting together my ps4 i might have done something wrong while putting together my disc drive..its not functioning the way it should at all since then ,thats why i couldnt update my system to 8.50 as its necessesary the whole system to be working fine . I had to start my ps4 while its opened up (like in the video ) and while downloading the update file i tried disconnecting and reconnect the disc drive cables ..it seems that doing that it resets the whole system so even tho my disc drive doesnt do its work somehow the system accepts it as it is working fine .Keep in mind the cables should be all connected to mother board ,then to disc drive (to check that lift the power supply to see if everything is connected ) . You can check if you done everything right when update starts installing and no error code appears. If this doesnt work for you then something else might be the problem ..i recommend trying different methods and just like in my case you will find a solution ..🙂

I think it does happen for people who have changed parts lately on PS4 cuz me and my friend had an overheat issues with the ps we changed the Ic cooler on the PS4 and this is the first update the came after repairing my PS4 so it think some parts of the PS4 is not well returned

Hey man. It works for me, but I only removed and took back that cable when ps4 was turned off. My problem didn't start with firmware upgrade, but I was changing thermal paste under processor cooler. When I assembled ps4 back, I get that error. Nothing works, only when I saw your video, tried to disconnect and reconnect the cable again and it works.

Bro thank you so much this shit work it was the wire you said to take loose after I unplugged it and plugged it back in my disk drive started working again and then my game begins update also if the disc drive starts spinning up put a game inside to keep it spinning that seemed to help stop the error messages from coming back

The only problem was that that wire was not connected properly. I fixed it with some tape, and it's working. Then, all I had to do was to update it regularly without having to format the hard disk

i have a first gen ps4. And to be clear is that the cable for the blu ray drive? I've had this issue before and fixed it. my fix was by tearing the ps4 apart and reapplying thermal paste and it worked. that was about a couple months ago and i dont want to do that again.

EDIT* I got my system to work by installing the 990mb file and going to safe mode and installing from usb. If that doesnt work try the video. If that doesn't work, Idk what to say...

YEAH, So this is a first gen as well I believe. Couldn't tell you for sure. But yeah, that is the disk drive/bluray player (same thing). Glad your fix was simply safe mode and reset. That didn't work without having to meddle with the disk drive!

Hey everyone who was having trouble with version 7.50 i managed to fix my problem and i know this is going to sound weird but theres no problem in trying you know. Ok so if youre disk isnt inserting then thats a good sign just turn off your ps4 completely and just smack it a couple times in the back. If the disk gets inserted then that means that you can update it now. If not then it probably is one of the ribbons. Im not joking im being 100% serious trust me

Yeah I'm having issues with this. Also, I'm trying to download a game and it finishes downloading the first part of the game (enough of the game where it at least allows you to start the app) and it says "Cannot Install". I deleted it and downloaded it again and the same thing appears. I cannot play that game. It says in order to open it I have to update the system software, so I keep trying to do that and it just puts me into safe mode and says "Error Occured SU-421186". ???

This has been an error dating back years. This PlayStation specifically was stuck on update 4.2 or something. I was trying to update to 6.0, but I'm not surprised people are having it with 6.02. Wait if you want, but I'm gunna say they probably WONT fix it.

@@papafrita3811 yeah, so one of the issues I noticed while trying to find a fix for this, was exactly that. No working eject button. There are tutorials on how to eject a disk manually. As for the non working eject button, it'll be fixed after you get past the error.

After having this problem every time I had to update I was able to fix it. For context, I had to remove my blue ray drive since it stopped working and every time I had to update I would reconnect the board to that grey ribbon cable until 7.50 where it stopped taking it. After a few hours of stress and troubleshooting I took out that Greyish cable for the cd drive from my ps3 and aligned it onto my ps4 and it successfully updated with leads me to believe the cause of the error is a faulty blurry cable.

You need to recheck all the ribbon connections. Unplug the PSU and check the ribbon underneath. I also have an in-depth tutorial you can follow (new video).

@@0816bachata yes the disk driver is also called "optic drive" or the blue ray drive. I THINK this ribbon is the power ribbon to the disk drive so i would google and or youtube ps4 slim disk drive power ribbon maybe ? might help you locate what ribbon does what. hope that makes sense

Unplug. Plug a controller in, plug the PS4 in, turn on, and keep taking X or O. I can't remember which one, so just tap both. It should restart and load back into a non updated home screen. Goodluck.

Got it in 6.51

Just got my PS4 back from Sony for them to "fix" this error. System worked perfect until update 6.00, then got the error. Sonys excuse was that heat from my XBox One caused corrosion in the PS4, so they weren't going to fix it. I'm still looking for this corrosion. All I can find is a little oxidation on one of the metal plates. Sounds like Sony just wants people to go out and buy more PS4's...

Hi Eric. My resounding presumption is that the coded a block into the updates that render your disk drive unresponsive. Then, once it notices that the disk drive is unresponsive, it limits you from updating. I have an in-depth tutorial on how to fix it, I uploaded an update video. Check it out, you should have no problem fixing it if you follow my steps.

Yeah, that's what it looks like happened. Worked perfect the night before the update, tried to do the update, got the error and the disk drive stopped working. All the info I'm finding online shows this issue goes back around 2 years and has to do with a faulty blu-ray cable, and Sony has done nothing to fix it. They just pull random excuses out of the air so they don't have to fix their screw up. I did some poking and prodding before I sent it in with info I got from videos, but none of it worked. I'll try your trick this weekend and see how it goes. Luckily I saved all my game data on a usb before I sent it in, and was able to transfer it all to the new PS4 I got 3 weeks ago.

На обновлении 6.50 выскочила такая ошибка :( Разобрал консоль и отключил от BD привода этот белый шлейф, включил консоль и привод начал пытаться выплюнуть диск или еще что то :) после выключил консоль, и подсоединил шлейф обратно! При включении BD заработал и обновление установилось!

@@Almaz_Nab На видео я не понял, там как разберешь консоль сверху широкий белый плоский шлейф в BD входит, сам шлейф уходит вниз под блок питания, вот его сверху просто отсоедини и включай консоль, он начнет там диск искать, отключай консоль как обычно и подсоединяй шлейф все!

I have this error now. But when I put it in safe mode or even on the error screen, I can’t even connect the controller even with it plugged into the ps4

It stops responding sometimes; the controller won't do anything. Unplug the controller, unplug the PS4. Plug the controller back in, same with the PS4, and take buttons until it turns on. Should load back up to main menu after restarting a second time. Something like that, same thing happened to me.

John Smith I can turn on the ps4 with the controller then it disconnects. Then I hit the ps button on the controller and it flickers then stops

The One and Only Me same exact thing With me as soon as I turn on my PS4 it states “An error occurred. (SU-42118-6)” and my controller just blinks and shuts down . I’ll give Sony a call Monday if you find anyway how to fix it text me @347 355 1907

I just got the same error

Ok so I came up with a solution. I took out the optical cable and switched the ends and updated using the 400mb file on a usb in safe mode and that got it to work.

That cable he points to at 1:30 you need to lift the power box and and then you can get to both ends. Push back on the little metal pieces to take them out. The switch the ends. Take note on how it bends cuz you’re gunna have to bend it the same for it to fit.

@@YumyChocEclare I tried as you said pushing the metal things but it doesn't budge. The cable underneath the powervoth won't let go of the cable and I'm afraid to break it. When you mean metal bit you mean the grey one above the white plastic piece?

This issue is non stop its happening from 7.02 all the way to now till 7.50 done with sony going to become a xbox player it looks like.

If you are having trouble. Just give your ps4 a couple of smacks. It actually helped me im being seriously honest not a troll. I saw some kid do it and i was like alright lets try it before i take it apart and it actually worked. Just make sure your ps4 is completely turned off and smack it like 5 times. If a disk gets inserted then just update in and it should work. Atleast for me.

A little more info....so my issue started when my daughter was playing Skyrim...she signed out and about 10 min after I went to load it up and all of a sudden it wouldn't even recognize that a disc was present and I had to manually remove disc so disc drive hasn't worked at all since that ....then the update and error came about a week or 2 after that...is that the cause?
