Memory foam. Don’t get an inflatable because with the cold it’s not going to work the way u want. Return that sleeping pad. Memory foam an cut it to ur desired size an shape. An use that try at home. Before u keep doing the trips try them at home sleep on them in ur floor. Test out the stuff.

Not a claim it's physics, chemistry. Propane releases water, hence humidity issues and they consume oxygen hence built in oxygen sensor. Very safe.

@@lenward474 This is correct. However, burning propane creates CO2 (carbon dioxide) and if there is not enough oxygen in the area then CO (carbon monoxide) can and will form.

I have a 2 door Tahoe of that body style and the single best thing I ever did was get one of those 18-20cu-ft clamshell cargo carriers and mounted it on the factory roof rack. It holds so much stuff that it blew my mind. And when its loaded, all the stuff is out of sight, out of mind and out of the way. And if you get one that opens at the back, you will be able to stand on your tailgate with the glass hatch closed and be able to easily reach into it, load it, etc. It also keeps your stuff dry and because they are pretty common they still look pretty stealth.

100% agree with you about Suburban camping advantages over a regular truck. Have you considered a foldable mattress for more sleeping comfort? You can get them at amazon and there's a narrow 75x25x4 that folds to 25x25x12. That 4 inch foam is very comfortable compared to a sleeping pad and even though they take up a little more space, you'll get much better quality sleep.

I love your videos dude. I own a 96 GMC Sierra 1500 Z71, part time work truck and part time overlander. I’m an avid camper and backpacker myself. I would definitely encourage and challenge you to be more conscious about the amount of waste you produce while camping. Easy ways to cut down are to bring towels instead of paper towels. Reusable water jugs and bottles instead of disposable plastic bottle. Tupper wear instead of plastic bags and plastic wrap. Just some friendly encouragement and challenge from a supporter. Keep it up.

I have an old 2003 suburban that Im slowly bringing back to life. Have had a great experience camping in it, love to see someone else feeling the power of the old suburbans ! I sent a clip of this to my gf but cant quiet convince her.... I always carry a portable jump starter. Also its been fairly common for alternators to go out on these models, so I carry an extra alternator. For reference, you can drive for about an hour and a half on a brand new battery with no alternator without the lights on! Happened to me on the way back from the boundary waters in Minnesota, bought a battery from Oreilly and made it almost home. Belts and basic socket set that fits bolts for alternator and pulleys. Tow strap in case I get stuck and someone comes by that can pull me out. Portable tire inflator.

Hi Jimmy, No need for the buddy heater to keep warm. I had a Buddy heater in the back of my truck (also had a bedrug and a carpeted topper). I also had a US Military ECWSS (Extreme Cold Weather Sleep System) sleeping bag set up. We were waiting for the new 511 Store to open in Knoxville. They were giving gift certificates valued at $500.00 to the first 50 customers and lesser values to the next 50. The ECWSS is rated to like minus 40 degrees below zero. It was 20 degrees outside. I turned off the buddy heater to check out the ECWSS to see it I could tolerate the cold. I woke up just before the store opened, I WAS WARM AS TOAST. Now in the back of my truck in my emergency supplies I keep two ECWSS, one for me and one for my wife. It was not just ok, it was actually comfortable. The Buddy heater can supplement some heat for comfort if you need it when you are not sleeping, but for general truck camping and the possibilities of an emergency, where you might be stuck, I highly recommend the ECWSS!!!! (not just any sleeping bag) as part of your vehicle kit.

Also about the plastic containers: it’s way easier cleaning nice stainless and glass containers than plastic containers. You may want to point that out, since a lot of people who live out of the vehicle can’t get to a place to clean their utensils for a few hours after the overnight. Also should probably do a segment on getting clean at a Truck Stop. Like a Petro. After days and days of vehicle survival - you may begin to seriously clean yourself. And truck stop showers are the BEST!

I have the same suburban. I bought a 4x8x0.5” sanded plywood. Had Home Depot cut it a 5’ so I had a 4x5 and 4x3 pieces. The 5-foot piece goes to the back with the 3-foot piece on top. This allows the second row seat to fold up. When it’s time to sleep, the seats go down and the 3-foot piece slides forward to make a 4x8 bed. It just so happens that IKEA has a 3” mattress that’s is meant as a portable mattress for guests. It’s conveniently 4’ wide which perfectly fits. It’s called a Plutten. You need two unfortunately. But the good news, they’re on sale right now for $60 each. That should solve the sore body aches so you can sleep past 4am.

I bought my Suburban because without knowing how versatile and truly capable they are. A Clear and Present sign of Danger showed how much of a beast these trucks are. The Presidential Motorcade has been using Suburbans for decades. I will keep my Suburban forever. Will completely rebuild it if need be. Currently cruising towards 400K miles. Only paid $2300 for ny 05 Suburban Z71 4x4. Was so pleased with it, i purchased an 07 Yukon 4x4 for $2500, but it wont see the same overland use as the Suburban.

Favorite part about late 90s/early 2000s SUVs for sure. So much room, you can pick up and go anywhere whenever you want. Enough space to take a ton of stuff & sleep in, 4wd so you're unlikely to get stuck anywhere, and pretty mechanical designs so they probably won't ever strand you (at least if something goes you can probably limp it home or to an auto parts store). I haven’t watched all your videos but want to say how glad I am to see someone who appreciates a drop down tailgate on a Suburban. I use my 99 as a work truck and use the tail gate every time I’m doing repairs on my equipment or fueling a chain saw . I think General Motors made a huge mistake discontinuing the drop down tail gate. They have taken the utility out of the vehicle. What started as a utilitarian truck has turned into just another soccer mom SUV.

If I was going over-landing, the vehicle that I would choose would be a Suburban and the things that I will do to it are sound deadening, putting a very comfortable mattress in it, a very heavy blanket and pillow, a climate controlled heating and cooling system, steel rims, mud terrain tires, a roof rack to hold the spare tire, maybe a 3" lift on the front and a 2" lift on the back, LED Lighting, fender flares, big breaks for good breaking, a fridge, a couple household outlets, an extra battery, a WiFi connector, a touch screen radio that looks factory, towing mirror to make it easier when reversing or hooking up a trailer, a back up camera, a brush guard, an LED Light Bar, a portable grill to make food, insulation, and the brightest rear facing lights.

It's winter. Bears are hibernating. Not only that but if you're in black bear territory, just make noise. Most of the time it'll scare them off. Also, I'm sure people have said this, but why not carry a gun? It's a huge stress reliever knowing you have the ultimate protection against anything at a distance and up close.

I agree with your opinion about the large SUVs compared to small camper truckbeds. Though I prefer a 4x4 van myself. I can see an exhaust fan next in your build, or rain deflectors on your windows for ventilation and condensation. It's better than opening the door to critters or a bear while cooking. Bear spray too, and a high powered weapon if possible in your state. By the way, nice truck.

About making coffee while camping..... there is an excellent tasting coffee by Folgers (and also the Walmart brand) that comes in little "Bags" like tea bags.. you simply place a coffee bag in your cup like you would a tea bag and pour hot water in the cup.. no need to carry paper filters or a container of coffee grounds with you. While I was chasing wildland fires across the western states for several years I Iearned to always carry a few of the little coffee bags in my coat pocket with an insulated cup cup and hope I could find hot water somewhere in a fire camp.

Few thoughts, but first, good job. You can buy small cans of cooked chicken that will add some protein to the ramen. Lounge chair cushions are pretty cheap at end of summer season. They fold up to take less floor space. Might need a chair cushion in addition for length. Take a big pillow. You get more heat from the vehicle if you close the cabin air recirculation switch BUT DON'T use it when parked and the engine is running. When the vehicle heat uses outside air, it prevents exhaust gas from coming in to the inside. Keep the CO detector on and in a low area of the vehicle when in a parked vehicle with the engine running. CO collects on the floor first. 10-4 on the advantage of getting to the back without having to go out side.

I really suggest a 'wand' type lighter rather than the Zippo for lighting that Coleman. They last forever, I've used one for my grill that's a couple years old now for lighting a charcoal chimney. You can get a two pack of them for $5 sometimes, too.

Hey Jimmy I'm a huge fan and have been a subscriber since I found you channel. Watching you has helped me with my own burb fixes. Loving the content and the overlanding/ truck camping stuff. It really makes me want a 4x4 rig because my 02 suburban isn't 4x4. As a suggestion maybe you could do some more flush mount lights on the rear bumper and get some brighter light for the night time shots. Keep up the great work and please keep the content coming. Thank you man.

I have used my Mr Heater in several ice fishing huts and camp tents and so far am not dead. Your truck has more leaks than anything else.

I'm thinking a DeeZee tailgate assist strut will help you lower the tailgate from inside or out. I would guess the one for the Silverado same year would work. Also, a strong pull rope with lawnmower pull handle to pull it up from inside would work great.

Don't make steam in the rig unless this is a one night outing. Leave the sleeping bag unfurled to dry for at least an hour, if possible. A body transpires 1 pt or more of water during sleep. Without daily drying, the bag can get clammy. Always give it a good airing at home before storage. Love my Little Buddy but I cannot see any foolproof way to safely use it inside the rig, plus it releases a lot of water vapor. I totally agree with your assessment of the advantages of s Suburban or Yukon XL. We have been camping in these over 30 yrs in all weather. Good job, have fun.

Years ago, I used to boil Ramen noodles, drain off the water, then stir in a can of Campbell's Chunky Soup...not the healthiest of meals, but it filled you up and kept you warm for a while. No need for the 'flavor packets' and whatever chemicals were in them.
