Solo-Werks Coilover Install Tips, Review, and Comparison - Mk6 GTI

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this month's video, I reveal my secret hacks to successfully install Solo-Werks coilovers on a VW GTI. I also drive in zig-zags and go over bumpy roads. So grab your popcorn, sit down, and enjoy the next 11-ish minutes of content that will surely make you lose a few brain cells! Either that, or you'll get some helpful advice to install your suspension THE RIGHT WAY to avoid having to deal with the pain of clicking and rattling noises every time your car moves. The short answer to the thumbnail is no, my car is not ruined. Quite the opposite actually.
This isn't an install video. There are probably millions of videos that show you how to install coilovers on a Mk6 GTI. Think of this video more as "research" to help you plan out how you want to modify your suspension.
Also, there are cool car noises in the video.
I decided to go with Solo-Werks coilovers for a few different reasons:
-my stock suspension had 120,000 miles, so it was time for a refresh
-I was going to do just shocks and lowering springs, but the Solo-Werks ended up being on cheaper since I bought them on sale from ECS Tuning
-the adjustability is something I really like that I thought I'd never need
-my brother had them on his car for a few months and I really liked how they rode and handled
-it's nice to have springs and shocks that are designed to work together
-you get way better handling with aftermarket suspension. and I like corners. so it was a match made in heaven
On that note, I'd like to give a big shoutout to my brother Shane for helping me get the rear strut bolts in (and make a decision on what suspension to buy). Without him, I'd probably still be on stock suspension, or on some crappy eBay setup. So thanks, Shane! 💙

Good video man I was chuckling. I actually want to start making similar review videos for the MK6 GTI. How are you liking the Solowerks after a few months? I am very close to buying a set!

Glad you liked the video! I'm still in love with the coilovers. I also put on a 24mm Eibach rear sway bar the other day and the thing handles like it's on rails. But the ride's still very tolerable. My spine's still in one piece, so that must be worth something👍🏼

For the rears. To lower the rear. The further you go from the base the lower the car right?

Did you get the extra bolts and other hardware from Ecs tuning as well? Or where can I find them?

I'm pretty sure ECS, Urotuning, and ShopDAP all have suspension hardware kits with all the nuts and bolts you need. It was like $60 for the kit, and then I ordered the different mounts from each of the 3 websites, just kinda based on whatever was cheapest.

did you need an alignment after installing mine shakes really bad sometimes on one side but everything is tight and looks good so im thinking i went so low and little bit of camber and tow may be the cause

An alignment might help. Also, a pretty well known issue with GTIs is some shaking/vibration under hard acceleration at higher speeds

Do you know what the ride height would be if you set them as high as they go? Im thinking of coilovers but but my wheels are 18x8 et34 which is pretty aggressive and don’t want to have a lot of rubbing issues. Really just looking to get rid of most of the fender gap.

Sorry for the late reply, the max height is definitely higher than stock if you wanna go full monster truck lol

Depends on how low you want it to go. Mine are about 3/4" higher than the lowest setting and I've been using the stock end links with no problems after ~15k miles.

I have them on mk4 gti. They bottom out easy. The rears have a strange thunk. Dont slam your car on these, ride quality is awful.
