    I respect a person for having a dream and doing whatever it takes to live it, but not at the cost of leaving your family behind. Especially your child. He could've gone when his kid was a little older. I honestly feel very bad for their son.

    @@jakelineham1789Firstly may he rest in peace. Secondly that’s an asinine comment. There’s a difference in exploring for necessity and for avarice and even insinuating that this dude fits in with the brave people who got on boats to look for new lands or the first pioneers into space is quite ignorant. This dude had balls and I respect his adventurer’s spirit, but the minute he got that feeling about not seeing his family again he should’ve hung up that goal for good. I’m not taking away from his bravery. I have no doubt had he been born at the right time he would’ve been exploring the oceans and discovering new things, but he wasn’t. It was the year 2007 and he decided to do this for no reason other than fame, and now his family gets to spend the rest of their lives on this rock without him. I’m tired of seeing people talk about these guys, that goes for the foreign volunteers in current war torn countries as well. I’ve seen so many families crying on the news because some poor fool met his end thousands of miles away and they can’t even say goodbye. You’re the most important man in the world to your family, they view you as a hero for just doing the things a man should do, and any man on this planet who walks away from that all for 10 minutes of fame is not a hero. In the words of Christopher Lee, “Brave, but foolish.”

    If he made it across, he would still be alive. That’s the difference between making it across and not. It’s a significant difference. He had neither the skills nor preparation to be successful.

    @@anthonypeterson428 I mean he made it literally 95% of the way so you really can’t say he didn’t have the ability to make it lol. He made it alll the way across the ocean and basically within sight of his goal a huge rogue wave caused him to capsize. He 100% had the skills and preparation, more so than most anyone else, but even the most skilled sea kayakers in the world would be majorly risking their lives trying what he did. That’s why people don’t do it lol

    John Alvin Garcillan just as the wife stated obviously this man was trying to come to terms with himself that he felt he could no longer fight to live. He loss his battle and if that’s the way he wanted to go, then so be it. His family is still proud of him and that’s all that matters. I hope his spirit rests well. And if you’ve never almost lost your will to live then I applaud you for it.

    When I saw the devastating picture of Andrew's wife crying beside his kayak, I decided to paddle along Turkish coast for 5500 km, first and ever, and dedicate this expedition to him and his family. RIP Andrew

    Watched the full documentary. I suspect a rogue wave took him out 30km from Milford sound which apparently is common in the area. Freezing waters and a broken / sinking kayak eventually caused hypothermia and the inevitable drowning.

    I heard that the shell he erected each night to sleep under, filled with water, and he was not able to right his kayak because of it.

    Reports keep saying it's a mystery on what happened to him. I hate to say it, he did say at one time himself in one of his videos that he woke at one point with great white sharks trailing him. It's like they were stalking him waiting for him to hit the water, so sad!!!

    Hypothermia and then drowning, which then his body most likely sank and preyed on, the water in the Tasman is brutally cold. A good cold water wetsuit with booties and gloves would have been a good addition to his emergency supplies.

    Sharks don't just stalk someone for that long of time. Yes they'll get curious but if he maybe tried to defend himself they might get scared and buggered off. I think he might have drowned.

    wyatt m He was very poorly prepared. His “traditional kayak” was an improper choice of boat for this kind of expedition. You basically need a waterproof cabin for protection and recovery to do this properly as two other successful kayakers demonstrated.

    I agree except I wouldn't put motorcycles in the same category. Yes your not armored with car body surrounding you but you can choose where and when traffic is better. I myself do not go into heavy traffic. Even in my car I do not like to. I wait till the roads settle down.

    I watched another documentary on Andrew previous to this updated film and a lot of the comments where so disrespectful to a man that lost his life being an adventurer,yes some may say he was ill equipped but he had that spirit in him to explore.his wife is not bitter that hes gone.. na te moana koe I whakangaro ngawari,the ocean took you rest easy man

    Damn! When he started crying and questioning himself and his motive, worrying about the possibility he wasn't going to see his family again, so scared, yet he kept going...     i have a friend that he told me about a man tried to a cross the sea with kayak but he sadly he didn't make it and i was thinking on doing the same from Brisbane but after what i saw in this vid and how sad the family were, I will not but my family through this.

    Such a tragic story. Absolutely insane that he actually made it across the Tasman in a sea kayak, not custom built or nothing. Hitting a beaufort 10 storm just as you're coming into land is pretty horrendous luck, can't imagine what it was like rocking over 10m waves in a kayak! Rest in peace Andrew, and my best wishes to his family

    Nothing is more important than family. That’s it. Greatness is secondary. This man made his decision. And his boy suffers for life. Made worse by the fact it wasn’t at all necessary to kayak to NZ. I keep thinking about this guy….and the misery he has caused his son for his own aspirations. That footage is heartbreaking…

    @@devanov3103 I think Adrew has always been a victim too. He has always been torn between his family and his quest. If he would've stayed home, part of him would've been very unhappy.     He had no business being out there. He wasn't mentally prepared for a voyage like that. No one talks the way he was in that first video, full of dispare and fear, then quits, just to turn around and go back out 2 weeks later to do it again

    There was no false bravado. He WAS mentally prepared. He knew the risks because of his experience but even he realized later this was on his limit. But he never quit. Wish he had 24 hours earlier. If he wasn’t mentally prepared, he simply could not have endured what he did.

    It is really amazing he made it as far as he did in that small kayak! He did it all in open water 1,000 miles ALONE without any stopping points to rest on land in between. That is like paddling from Michigan to the Atlantic Ocean without stopping. Incredibly he almost made it!

    When I started to enjoy sea kayaking, one of the very first stories which crossed my path was the one of Andrew McAuley. It really impressed me. Would you advice not to sea kayak? That is what is on my mind sometimes when I am on large distance paddles and thinking of Andrew. There is been said all kind of things about Andrew´s expedition. I just feel admiring and sadness at the same time. Probaby he will always be in my head during future expeditions.
