Solo Road Trip to the Ozarks… What Can Go Wrong

I planned a 1700 mile road trip to explore the Ozarks of Arkansas. I would check out the Bikes, Blues, & BBQ rally, Pig's Trail, and the famous Oark Cafe. Thanks to Triumph for the loan for the trip, the Tiger 900 GT Low, @VeteranBiker for letting me ride his limited edition Harley Trike, and @adamsandoval for a treehouse stay at the K River Campground.

Bull Shoals Lake. The water is a gorgeous green from the minerals in the water, but so clear when looking straight down you can see really deep. The ferry is something to come back for. The road from Fayetteville to Alma is a gorgeous ride. Even on I-49 it's a gorgeous view. I took a trip across Northern Arkansas many years ago. In northeast Arkansas, there was a park with the remains of a town that had t61st post office west of the Mississippi.

I'm going to do a ride the Ozarks video series this year. Highway 123, the Arkansas dragon's tail is high on the list. The Arkansas Grand canyon is a must-see. The peel ferry loop is a fun ride. Highway 7 into Jasper then eating at the cafe there is always fun. Push mountain road is super fun, and you can get a patch for it at the gas station halfway down. Mountain view is another popular motorcycle destination and is where mountains, music, and motorcycles is typically held. The Ozarks are a little motorcycle paradise 🙂

Go South out of Jasper on Highway 123 down to Hagarville. First part is really curvy and then gets into more sweeping curves. Lots of other good roads in the area with low traffic. Just keep an eye out for the deer.

I was watching you remove your pannier boxes each time. I have the same bike and panniers, and would recommend that you invest in some pannier liner bags. These are soft bags that fit perfectly in the boxes. When you do your overnight stops just pull out the soft bags from the panniers and your good to go. And leave the panniers on the bike. Much easier. Have fun!

It's called simply The Pig Trail. And it's one of the best rides, having ridden coast to coast (but not every state or every road for certain!). I enjoyed that loop more than the Tail of the Dragon or the Cherohala Skyway. I was lucky enough to enjoy it on a pretty much brand new Ducati Multistrada on a ride from Virginia Beach to the California Coast. What a ride! IIRC, I did 21 to 16 to 23 (which is the Pig Trail). Turning south onto 23 was the best park, with some nice undulating S turns, it was a blast. I got about 10 miles of fun in before a sheriff dropped in on my tail for the next 10-20 miles until I got to the I-40. I denied him the ticket, though. And on the Ducati, too! Nerves of steel! There are a few scenic sections on the loop I did, but that's not what makes it a good ride. It's the turns. Only about a 1/3 of the northern section of 23 is the premium part, but it's worth it. TBH, I'm considering retiring to that area just so I can ride it. It's a LONG way from where I live now in Silicon Valley, but I'd be a lot closer to roads I've only ridden once before. If ever. eg: Tail of the Dragon and all that far more eastern US stuff a Californian is unlikely to see.

Props to you again for taking on another adventure! I spent 9 months in Fayetteville, AR at which time I had a BMW K1200 RT and explored a lot of the state and I'll admit fun, smooth, curvy roads were just a few miles from home. The 21, 16, 27 and 7 (along with the 23 you rode) are comparable and worth trying to hit next time through.

BB&BBQ is usually bigger, but this was the first year it was in Rogers, AR. Years before they had it in Fayetteville, AR with a bike parade on the first day and it went down Dickson street with bars, restaurants, booths, and concerts. Hopefully they will plan it better for next year because it was scattered around Rogers at the Embassy Suites, Pig Trail Harley Davidson in Rogers and Downtown Rogers, AR. The downtown has been getting renovations and new businesses. It should be worth a visit next year or the year after. Fort Smith, AR also has the Steel Horse Rally May 5th & 6th. BB&BBQ will be September 20th-23rd. RIDE SAFE!!!!

As someone who lives in the Ouachita mountains (just south of where you where) Hwy 7 is fun ride. There may be more impressive places when you're traveling from sea to shining sea, but the Ozarks and the Ouachita's are the best rides for hundreds of miles around here. You should come back with a dual sport and ride the US national forest trails at Wolf Pen Gap near Mena Arkansas.

I ride to BBBQ every year. You missed many of the other curvy roads in Arkansas. Pig Trail obviously is the most well known one (and dangerous) along with 62 out of Eureka Springs. They moved the venue to Rogers this year, so some things weren't up to par because Rogers wasn't really ready for the event. Hopefully they will be better organized next year. I haven't tried the K River Campground; I stay with a relative (to save money, and for good conversation). Hope you can come back and take it all in. I'd recommend getting a pair of GIVI E143 Trekker Outback Padded Handle, Black, 40. They sell them individually. They strap to the lid of those panniers(Givi makes the panniers for Triumph). Then you can carry them like normal suitcases. There's also the GIVI E144 Elastic Net. This attaches to the inside of the lids and allows you to insure smaller, lighter stuff is right at hand when you open the panniers.

You didn't do it "wrong" in AR, but you did Oark, so a lot of right. BBB was fun the 2nd year they did it but after the 3rd year I haven't been back. The ride to and from Fayetteville was better than the event (I hate crowds!).

I'm sure the HD Trike is very interesting. Muscle memory, and changing what you KNOW works, lean, countersteer, etc. can really throw you for a loop. Push right go left really can freak a person out the first time! I tried a CanAm Spyder test ride. I was fighting the thing the whole time, but knew something was really cool about it. Once I started thinking ATV instead of MX bike, it got better. I did make the purchase, moving off of 2 wheels after over 45 years, trading in my Honda ST1300. I'm now on my 2nd Spyder, over 50k on them, and really enjoy the larger lane presence and comfort. Motor on Doodle, cool stuff as always from you!

Growing up in SW Missouri and doing a lot of riding in Arkansas I can honestly say that if you've ridden the entire country then the Ozarks will be underwhelming. 7 is great if you're into carving twisty roads (and you can catch it without truck traffic clogging it up), and the ferry is a cool experience. Beyond that, at the end of the day, it's just curvy roads with a lot of trees.. If you do go back to catch the Arkansas Grand Canyon I recommend doing it while the leaves are changing colors

If you liked the 3 wheel Harley, the Spyder is next level.

You only visited a small portion of the Ozarks. It's part of 5 states but is mostly located in Missouri and Arkansas and would be difficult to find all the gems in the few days you had. I'm from Southwest Missouri so it was nice to see you near my old stomping grounds. There are some fantastic roads around Branson, Missouri if you're ever in the mood to visit us hillbillies again.

7:47, that's me! Wrecked my RGS, my throttle got stuck (new bars and grips), and straightened my bike before making it out of the curve 🤦‍♀️. I was mad, I had rode the pig trail with my Indian challenger and the street bob prior to this wreck 😭. She's in the shop, and I'll be back on my 2 wheels. Meanwhile, I'm stuck on 18 wheels.

Well, Doods, you did something I have yet to do but plan to: ride a trike. And you did great! As you and VB parked at the Oark Cafe on the dirt parking lot, I thought, "Hey, you don't need a kickstand on a trike." Duh. I have had the Harley on a couple of different ferries in Wisconsin. Oh, and glad you connected with Adam - cool dude and love what he's done with the campground. As for the trip, I think if you had an extra day on the front end you would've been able to relax and enjoy a little more. But you've ridden some amazing roads; it's pretty tough to hold anything up to Cherohala or the Black Hills IMO, so you try to let each trip stand on its own. You'll never be able to do everything in a given location, so continue to connect with the people like you always have. That's what you tend to remember most anyway. Great post.

I’ve been in NWA almost two years and love to just get on my bike and find new roads to ride. So many nice rides here throughout AR. I enjoyed your video and it was nice to see you and Ben @VeteranBiker trading bikes for a bit. He’s a great guy and I loved his Roadglide he had, but I do think his trike is awesome too. Stay safe.

Made me nostalgic watching this. This area is close to where I used to live. I ate at that Cafe more than once. We used to ride four wheeler trails up there.

I don't know what to say...I liked the Ozark national forest and the "Pig tail" routes - very scenic and layed-back. I live in the upper Midwest, so this BBQ rally sort of closes out my riding season.

The BBQ Rally was in Fayetteville Ar for years then was pushed out for unknown reasons. Rogers stepped it and is working to keep it in Northwest Arkansas give them a chance and Rogers will make it happen and be better. Also come to the Steel Horse Rally in May in Fort Smith Ar.

Great, fun video. I hadn't seen your Triumph adventure bike. What a fantastic bike. The perfect size for the street and some mild off roading. That place you stayed at the end of the video was extremely cool. Room in a treehouse. So cool. Trikes are great vehicles, but most have to be driven slower than regular bikes to be safe. Those 1700 lb ones were bad as heck. Can you imagine how hard it would be to turn those around in a parking lot? I liked your friends veterans Harley trike too. Harley really promoted this platform when nobody else would. Much respect to Harley for doing that.

I go to Oark Cafe quite often. Catalpa Cafe, a few miles on further, is great as well. Highway 123 is a nice curvy road, with part of it being dubbed the Arkansas Tail of the Dragon(a little too hairpinny..). A ride to Mount Magazine(within sight of my house) has great views. There are several roads around Jasper, AR, and the Buffalo River that are nice as well.

Me and my brother were in his pickup, we where behind a person on a motorcycle for a while, then we came up to a red light, the biker stopped and then just fell over, we got out and helped him pick it up, found out that it was a friends bike, his trike was in the shop, not use to putting his feet down when stopped.

I grew up on the pig trail. I have rode up and down the pig trail more times than I can remember. Its still one of my most favorite rides to take. during the fall its absolutely beautiful. Its a great ride and stopping at Ozark Cafe is a must. They have the best peanut butter pie I think I have ever had there. As for BBB when they had it in Fayetteville it was a lot bigger. They had tons of venders, poker rides, and to me it was a better rally than it is since it has oved to Rogers.

Laconia is having its 100th Anniversary Bike Meet this year. Personally I've never been, but I'm considering going. Did a Goldwing Poker Run in the same area years ago. Which was kinda funny as we were one of the youngest couples on the oldest Goldwing (I had a 79' GL1000 w/a Vetter fairing). There's a lot of great roads here in NH to ride on. I live near the coast but I've ridden all the way up to the mountains on back roads and hi-ways.

One of these days, you should do a ride thru the Sierra Foothills. Start out in Folsom CA and end up at Lake Tahoe and everywhere in between. The whole area is amazing. We have a "baby dragon" called Salmon Falls Rd outside Folsom, CA and then HWY 49. Go mid-week to miss the traffic and end up looping around Lake Tahoe.

If you think trikes take some getting used to, I highly recommend trying a sidecar rig. Urals are my personal favorite sidecar bike. If you like unique and interesting restaurants and are near Central Illinois I would suggest checking out the Moonshine Illinois general store.

You needed to go south into Missouri; Table Rock Lake, Branson, Silver Dollar City (has one of the best cave tours I've been on) & one of the coolest Bass Pro Shops in the country, they have a huge fish tank and have divers go down and feed the fish by hand, you can witness in a huge glass see through "pond". Arkansas also has the Walmart Museum, two American gun manufactures (Wilson & Nighthask which you can tour) and a really cool place with a river driven mill called War Eagle. Try again!

The Ozarks can be beautiful, and Highway 7 would be a fun ride, but if you want amazing views and good turns Million Dollar Highway in Colorado is number 1 on my list. The Four Corners Rally happens on Labor Day weekend in Durango, CO., which is just south of the MDH and a pretty fun rally.
