Solo in Saigon's most dangerous district 🇻🇳

🇻🇳 Saigon tends to have a somewhat bad reputation for being a city with a lot of stealing, especially drive-by phone snatching and bag snatching. 3 years ago in Saigon I saw it firsthand happen right in front of me. It tends to be more common in certain areas and on certain roads, according to my friends. Today with my bag and camera, I went to one of Saigon's infamous "rough" districts, a place people told me not to go, to see how the stereotypes hold up. Would I get my bag or camera stolen? Would I be stared at by thugs? Or would I meet friendly, curious locals. Come watch and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Oh, for good knees and legs for walking. I used to walk 4-5 miles a day in Honolulu in the 1970s and 80s, but those times are over. I just past 80 a few days ago. Thank you for taking me on this walking tour.

I mentioned at the beginning that I had visited a dangerous part of Saigon in 1966, Southwest of Nguyey Hue Blvd, somewhere along the river dock area. Now I recall that the danger was not pickpocketers but Viet-Cong, and after walking around for a while, I believe some local suggested it would be better if I leave for my own safety. As you have experienced, speaking the local language is a very big factor in getting smiles and good advice.

That first stop for food, you shared the same 3 cups for tea, not very safe considering the Covid situation Good job buddy and thanks for posting in English for your English speaking viewers and nothing wrong with interacting in Vietnamese with the locals. It's what makes you unique. Vietnamese viewers are trying to learn English especially the pronunciation part so perhaps this will be a win win situation for your future shows.

Then I realized that it is called "bánh cam" in Saigon and "bánh rán" in Hanoi. Actually it is the same thing with different names. - i have never ever explored that much in Saigon. Chris, this has to be one of your best videos. The wife and myself loved seeing your visit to District 8 and how well you interacted with all of the people you came in contact with. You did a great job of explaining why all of us have to be careful using stereotype descriptions of poor parts of a town. As you said, most people are good and just trying to survive in their own ways. The wife and myself got a good chuckle out of your comment of how unsafe you felt while walking around in places like S.F. out here in CA....we agree totally with you. It's really sad, I love America, but it is not as safe as it use to be years ago and I don't know why. Oh, one more comment.....love how well you and Max work together on those joint videos....perfect match for both of you. Keep up the excellent video presentations. Indeed it surprised me how unsafe I felt out in SF... 😂 First time there around Union Station I wanted to walk to Japan town at night and decided against it after all the weird people shouting and looking at me. Unfortunately I think development pushes a lot of people deeper into poverty and also causes more mental issues due to pressure of life, so you end up getting a more unsafe environment. That’s my guess at least, haha. Glad you enjoy the videos with Max and Brandon (Phuc Map) too! Max will be coming up to the north to film videos with me for about 2 weeks so a lot more content with him will be coming! Above all thanks for watching and stay safe!

The guys at the Hủ Tiếu..... Seeing Saigon people with the Southern accents were trying to correct their "d" and "v" sounds to explain for Chris what the sauces are is so cute! And the way Chris tried to understand them is adorable too Him: này để chấm bò diên Chris: để chấm riêng à? Him: chấm bò diên, bò Viên, bò Viên. Anyways, yes! I do agree with Chris that stereotypes and news can really give the place a bad image. Sometimes you have to go down the local areas experience it yourself to know what the place actually is like.
