Solo Exercises to Train Timing in Jiu Jitsu - Basic Metronome Exercises

Спорт

We are commonly engaged in high resistance environments when we are sparring. We are working against our partner's will and tenacity to submit us in a roll. We will often find ourselves in situations where technique that we want cannot be applied just yet.
Something I always ask myself when evaluating a roll or tape is the following :
'Was there a technical fault or was it a timing fault?' This gives me clarity in 2 lines of thinking because there also may be a situation where it was a bit of both rather than one or the other.
These metronome exercises are a basic way to visualise how to beat your partner's timing in a solo setting that is unresisted. We must reduce the level of complexity and resistance in order to better understand how to operate in high resistance environments. It is difficult to constantly try and problem solve in a high resistance environment. My personal recommendation from my own experience is to play with the levels of resistance in such a way that you can use your own internal world and visualisation to run through the potential actions your partner might try to do in response to your movement.

Awesome application of this concept in grappling. I’ve used something similar when I boxed it was moreso to drill footplacement/stance and timing.

HI Margo, thanks for the vid. Just wondering, so you mention the space between beats--as one gets comfortable with a tempo on the grid, does it then make sense to change the rhythm at that tempo, so, adding "half notes" and moving twice in a given beat? I'm not sure I'm explaining myself well but I would appreciate your feedback. Thanks

bpm is meaning less. We don't move on the same beat in real situations.

You’re supposed to ‘beat’ the timing. :) but if you lack the understanding to collaborate to a BPM, I personally find it hard for people to build an understand of how to beat timing if you lack the initial understanding of how to stay on beat. Look at a lot of the timing for foot sweep drills in Judo. It’s collaboration until you decide to get ahead.

Sorry guys. I just stopped watching at the start when she used the regular beat. I'll watch till the end and find out the reason why. Sorry.

@@a-z2928 patience goes a long way, friend. Hope it makes more sense or else I'm happy to clarify why I use this as a tool in teaching.
