Solo Eating Japanese Local Food in Otaru Hokkaido

I'm going to eat around in Otaru today. It's a small and quiet city in Hokkaido, Japan. And it's also delicious. You'll find a fluffy fromage suffle, deep fried chicken and otaru beer.

Well, it was laid out on the table for us so to speak. No need to google some deceptively coy name like sweetbreads, which are of course neither sweet nor bread.

German here, I'm glad you liked the food. The potato dumpling (or "Kartoffelkloß" in German) looks a bit different to the one you get here. But all the food and above all the music ist typically Bavarian, not typically German 😄 Funny to see that the Bavarian part is more popular in other countries. As always a really good video. Can't wait for the next one! ❤️

I once heard a Frenchman speak in a derisive tone about the German fondness for eating dumplings. Did he not know numerous cuisines have a version of these ? And, just what did he think quenelles were....

What?! That potato dumpling is the exact same kind my grandparents and parents all grew up eating in Germany and are the exact same kind I was raised eating, known as Knödel. And while yes, the dumpling and music are Bavarian in origin, even those tunes are almost identical to the songs my Opa would dance around the living room to 😂

Otaru was so crowded when I visited 3 years ago, and it was really difficult to take in the shops and the sights... how I wish it could remain as a quiet town always like how it is in this video, but I guess the crowd will be back again once Japan is open fully to all tourists.

  • @sucyshi

It'll be open to all tourists Oct 11, but it's going to take a long time for any of us foreigners except those who are both obsessed and wealthy to return to Japan, better yet Otaru Among the general population, the news will be slow to spread, and people looking up how to go to Japan will sometimes see the old news that it's still closed and immediately plan somewhere else. On top of that, international vacations are usually planned far in advance, rarely last minute due to how cost prohibitive fights are. Finally, the aviation agency is struggling to offer enough flights in general due to staffing issues especially with pilots, so the sudden increase in demand won't be able to be met with appropriate supply. I suspect flights between non Japan countries would need to be cancelled to redirect resources to Japan flights to get more supply within the next 9 months

A note on that potato dumpling: That is supposed to act as a sponge to suck up all the gravy. Therefor you don't cut it with your knife but gently rip it apart. This will keep the dumplings pores open and maximizes it's absorbing capacity. It looks like there were some crumps of (hopefully roasted) bread inside. That's a mark for a good potato dumpling - it gives some extra texture, and regulates the moisture during cooking. I'm glad you enjoyed your bavarian food 😁

Thank you for the food tour! Certain foods are share in both our cultures. Potato dumplings looks like baked potato, which tastes great. I like fresh real rice. Fake rice does not taste as good. Some of your dishes are similar to what is here. That pork roast looks great. Some areas use potatoes instead of rice. Farther South, grits are used instead of rice. Fried chicken is similar to the fried chicken here. I noticed that you enjoy ramen noodles. I enjoy regular noodles. I wonder if the ramen noodles here is the same as where you are at. They taste bad. Maybe they are fake? Thank you for listening.

Die Soße sah sehr dünn aus, und der Braten sehr sehnig. Ich würde das nicht unbedingt typisch deutsch nennen, eher klischeehaft deutsch ;) aber das Weissbier sah gut aus. The sauce looked kinda thin (for german standards), and the meat looked kinda fatty/sinew-y to me. I wouldn't call that food typical german food, more like cliché german food. But the beer looked pretty tasty and authentic :)

Salted squid guts ? HORROR ! All the food you've eaten so far, lovely. Sometimes a little bit iffy with the raw foods. But salted squid guts ? Six very large and muscular Sumo gentlemen could not hold me down and make me eat it ! For the first time in the history of Sumo, one small Spanish man will take out all six of them and then run for his life. One small Spanish man, six Sumo, and one little dish of salted squid guts, bad combination.
