Solo Backpacking MONTANA Wilderness in Rain, Thunderstorm!

Hi Campers,
I go backpacking into the Montana Wilderness in the Bridger Range of south west Montana!! I make my camp for the night and cook a delicious Sirloin Steak dinner in a thunderstorm while it's raining on me and my camp! I see a herd of Rocky Mountain Elk in the meadow near my camp. I climb a high ridge for a final view of the wild northern Rocky Mountains!
"Keep Hiking!!"

I vicariously enjoy these outdoor adventures. Watching from the UK. It's amazing seeing the equipment designed for easy assembly and usage. I used to go on some camping holidays with my family back in the 1970s - so things have changed a lot since then!!!!

Wow. Thank you for this one. I lived in Gardiner, MT from 1986 to 1992 and then in Bozeman until 1996. I miss it soooooo much. When we lived in Gardiner at the North Gate to Yellowstone, we spent a lot of time up in the Park. Beautiful. Heard of only one incidence of fatality in the wilds: 2 young men who went camping together with only their sleeping bags up in the high country in the spring and both got mauled/killed by bears.

Hello Chris from Apple Valley California, 🍎 I really enjoy watching your channel, I'm relatively new to your channel so I have to say it's very refreshing to veiw your take on the whole wilderness experience I love your passion for hiking, cooking, and discovering new places, not to mention to stories you share with us wiewers! I get to vicariously go and experience all those beautiful places with ya, which is super cool! But i have to ask you a question ... And the reason why I'm going to ask you this question is because I had a Bigfoot -Sasquatch encounter back in 1985 when I was 17 years of age on my aunt's 10 acres of raw woodsy property while I was hiking with my four cousins in Boring Oregon. I've always loved the woods and outdoors, but after my horrific encountered with the king of the forest Bigfoot - Sasquatch ...I have to say it tainted the whole thing for me now that I know what truly exists in those woods! In fact, I can't even go into the woods anymore! So my question is.... how do you do it knowing that Bigfoot -Sasquatch roams the deserts, forest, and woods?? Do you ever think that you might run into him/her or them?? And if so, what are your thoughts on that?? Thanks so much for sharing with us your enthusiasm for the outdoors, and for all the advice, and also for the experience!! Stay safe! You're the best Chris!! Showing lots of support from Apple Valley California, 🍎

You should go to McCall Idaho sometime and camp there. Also visit the McCall fish hatchery. I lived there for several years as a child and it is absolutely gorgeous! Two bald eagles live in a huge pine tree at the very back of the hatchery by the river. That is where I saw the bald eagle mating ritual! I will never forget it!

Found your channel and love watching your videos. A good tip for those bear cans is to mark them with high visibility reflective tape. That way if a bear does knock it around the bright color (pink, orange) will make it easy to find. The reflective tape makes it easy to see with a headlamp or flashlight in the dark.

Personally, I bring a kitchen sponge from home (cut into about a third) and boil some water after I’m done cooking and allow it to cool just so it’s tolerable to put my hand in but still warm and just scrub it out the best I can w my sponge.. then dig a hole to dump my dirty cook water in away from camp.. I’ve tried a few methods and this seems to work for me :)

  • @basecampchris

I like the sponges as well with the scouring pad on the opposite side ( cut in 1/2 ) , small leak proof pop up top container for all natural dish soap and get water from a stream or boil as you mentioned....digging a small hole sounds like a good idea to dispose of the dirty water.

You're brave going in bear country without a gun. I went up there elk hunting once and we seen two grizzlies luckily they were far away

Thanks for this video. Looks like you had a ton o' fun. Great gear demonstrations! Looks like good stuff. I have backpacked in Montana. It is a wonderful place. I need to get back there again. I do not cook, nor store food nor cooking gear, within 100 yards of my tent. Whether one is in bear country or not, there are many other creatures great and small who are attracted to food aromas. The result is holes chewed in gear. Also, food aromas can stay in the material of your tent and other gear indefinitely. Again, thanks for this video. Good job!
