Grazie mille per avermi mostrato il canale di Nicola Pignatiello. Sono un chitarrista e questa per me è una grande scoperta.

What syllables do you use to sing an ascending melodic minor scale? Re - Mi - Fa - ? - ? - ? - ? - ? Is it like a dorian scale with 7th degree being musica ficta? Re - Mi - Fa - Sol - Re - Mi - #Fa - Sol? Is it like an æolian scale with 6th and 7th degree ficta? Re - Mi - Fa - Re - Mi - #Fa - #Sol - La? Something else?

When the nature of the chant is B hard you have the Dorian scale from D and the Aeolian scale from A. When the nature of the chant is B flat you have the Dorian scale on G and the Aeolian scale on D. This is the main difference between the 1st Tone and the 7th Tone. Ps: I say Tone and not Mode because, as Banchieri shows in his Cartella musicale, while the 1st Glarean Mode corresponds to the 1st tone, the 7th Glarean Mode doesn't correspond to the 1st Tone. In fact the difference between the 1st Tone and the 7th Tone is that the 1st tone has the B hard, while the 7th tone has the B flat. So on D in the first tone you will sing the "Dorian" scale. On D in the seventh tone you will sing the "Aeolian" scale.

Yes, that makes total sense! So, for ascending melodic minor scale, you keep the same syllables for the raised sixth and seventh degree ascending in Æolian scale (raised Fa and Sol), or, if in cantus durus, only raised seventh degree in Dorian (raised Fa), just sing them raised?
