SOLGW - Loyal 9 - Chuck Pressburg and Mike Mihalski - Barrel Length

Ойын-сауық

Every rifle begins its life as a barrel. We build the rest of the weapon to support that barrel.
The task dictates which barrel to select. Purpose Built.

    As far as distance shooting goes, any size AR is going to be equally accurate within 600 yards and it's your job to know your holdover. My number 1 main concern is terminal ballistics which is HIGHLY velocity based. Even though all barrel lengths from 10"-20"+ are equally accurate out to 600, "some will argue even further", it's a matter of how fast is that round traveling at all in between distances. I could get even more in the weeds about bullet design and weight per application but personally as far as 556 is concerned the 13.7" is the absolute lowest length I'm willing to even consider. I mainly run 16" because I like that I have plenty of options in multiple grain weights that will consistently travel at 3k+fps at muzzle and stay well above the magic 2200fps at practically whatever realistic distance. I love to learn and train as much as possible but I'm certainly FAR from seal or spec standards and don't need that shorter platform they now train and operate on. I can manage a 16" around my house efficiently but still gives plenty of length for outside on our ranch. I'm not trying to make a generalization or anything here but I see far too many people getting wrapped up in putting accuracy and distance of accuracy far above velocity on the priorities list.

  • @KeepTheGates

    @KeepTheGates

    Agree. Short builds are "hot" right now, but they really only serve one purpose. If my memory serves me correctly, a 10.5 inch barrel will only cause m193/m855 to fragment reliably at about 50 yards. 5.56 is velocity dependent and if I wanted a shorter gun I'd probably run a different caliber.

    If we get an acceptable muzzle velocity from the 5.56, isn't db reduction kind of irrelevant in terms of using a k sized suppressor compared to a fuller length one? The round is still going to crack and produce a noticeable sound signature. In my mind, and maybe not in practicality, a 12.5 inch barrel with acceptable velocity and improved reliabilty, with or without a suppressor, would ultimately be preferable over moderate or negligible db reduction.

    @Phillip Cameron Thanks I appreciate the response. The issue of Dwell time was mentioned in the video. Do you by chance know if an adjustable gasblock could be tuned to get a carbine length gas system to handle like a midlength system?

  • @kristjonpedersen9342

    @kristjonpedersen9342

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@andycaldwell4828 gas block doesn't affect dwell time just the amount of gas running through the system. The dwell time is determined by how long the gas system is. I wouldn't use an adjustable gas block for anything other than a range you because they tend to get carbon locked causing reliability issues, instead I just pick my gas port size based on its purpose and ammo being used so it's properly gassed from the beginning.

    Yes you are 100% correct and Chuck is a 'try hard' and a 'know it all' except Mike is the one that actually knows everything. A short good quality barrel like a 10.5" or 11.5" will shoot moa all day at 100 yards just like a 16" will but just with less velocity. Shorter barrels are more rigid/ stiffer and have less barrel whip than longer barrels and I've seen short barrels outshoot longer ones up close before. I hate when people say "less accuracy" when talking about shorter barrels. I have a 10.5" POF P415 that I have hit steel at 400 yards at my local range pretty consistently and when shooting a longer barrel I don't hit it any more than I do with the 10.5" granted using the same optics comparing the 2. People are dumb and say dumb shit I swear. Everybody tries to be an expert on the internet.
