Manufacturer Spotlight: Sons of Liberty Gun Works

Спорт

The name and logo are awesome, but what's the story behind Sons of Liberty Gun Works? Brownells Gun Tech™ Keith Ford is joined by Mike Mihalski, founder and owner of SOLGW, to find out what this premier AR-15 maker and AR-15 parts purveyor is all about. Mike started out as a serious, hardcore AR-15 shooter who came to really understand the difference between a "good enough" duty-grade AR and a rifle built to take full advantage of what the AR-15 platform is capable of. After building guns for friends, the next step was to start a business manufacturing premium-grade AR-15s. He wanted to build for other AR shooters the kind of rifle that HE wanted to shoot, a tough gun that would stand up to hard use. The heart of every Sons of Liberty Gun Works rifle is the barrel - and the rest of the gun is built to support the barrel. The attention to detail goes extends to gas port size and how gassing affects AR-15 performance. The expectation is that at some point every SOLGW rifle will be fired with a sound suppressor, and gas flow is designed to handle that. Another key factor in SOLGW's success is staying in touch with its customers, along with active support of the 2nd Amendment. "It's not just a rifle company, it's a cause." Mike closes with some hints about what's coming next from SOLGW.

I cant say enough good things about this company. I bought a 24inch 6.5 barrel them...called them to double check the journal for the gas port so I could get the correct gas block. Mike called me back from his personal cell and said if I ever had any problems to hit him up. So much respect goin out to them for all they do🤘🙏

I have reached out to SOLGW several times to get assistance, no one has reached back yet or picked up the phone.

I laughed out loud when I saw what they're charging for a barreled upper. $500 for a barrel, gas block, gas tube, barrel nut, and upper receiver. No hand guard, no BCG, no charging handle, no muzzle device. They are smoking that 1986 L.A. crack, the good shit. They don't offer anything that you can't buy/build for yourself at a cheaper price. That's my problem with them. You could build yourself 2 guns with pretty much the same components for what one of their rifles cost. I suppose you're paying for the branding, the QC, and the free replacement parts. I don't personally see that much value in that to warrant their price point, but spend your money how you want. You do get a cool logo...and that's half the battle right there.

@@project86xero PSA upper with Geissele rail is $680 right now, and it has a CHF barrel. Their other offerings around the $400-$500 range can either be complete uppers w/ BCG and charging handle or they can have more premium features like a CHF barrel, iron sights, red dots, muzzle devices but are minus the BCG and charging handle. Brownell's is selling a SOLGW bare frickin' upper for almost $500 with shipping and tax. Its an assembled upper with a barrel and gas system, that's it. You'd have to spend another $500 to get it ready to shoot. A Ballistic Advantage barrel is $100 on BDU, $165 if you get the Hanson profile (I've heard that's who SOLGW uses for barrels. Not 100% sure). Lets say we use an Aero Precision M4E1 assembled upper, that's $140. Add in a gas block and gas tube for another $40. We have the same basic bare upper as SOLGW for $280, or $345 with the better barrel. SOLGW is overpriced for what it is. Again, if they were offering something different then maybe I could see the point, but what sets them apart from the other 20-25 reputable manufacturers/assemblers? Nothing but branding as far as I can tell.

@@mikef3808 I don't doubt that its good, or even great. There's just 10 other companies who give you more for your money while maintaining the same level of quality and durability. I don't see what sets them apart and justifies their chosen price point. And lets be real here, 90% of people (me included) will likely never push a rifle to its limits or even shoot it often enough to warrant exchanging out worn parts. I don't see the free parts replacement as a positive. I look at it the same way I look at an extended warranty on your car. It costs you more money up front and you'll likely never use it.

@@oldscratch3535 PSA doesn't have any QC. Zero. Go look up School of American Rifle's PSA autopsy videos. PSA is trash QC. It seems PSA buys / uses rejected out of spec parts. Sure, you might get a CHF FN barrel, but the barrel extension isn't torqued correctly, or the chamber isn't cut to proper 5.56 NATO specs. That Tool Carft BCG might have a free bore with machining is rough, too wide and out of spec - reject bin / gas inefficient. PSA assembled rifles, you're lucky if they properly torqued the barrel nut to specs - loose barrel nuts are a common problem. I would never pick PSA for a home defense carbine. And you'll notice no police department use PSA trash.

Mihalski Makes Threats Against Officers There was harassing behavior against police dispatchers in 2009. Then, in 2010, Mihalski was arrested for public intoxication. During the arrest Mihalski claimed he killed Sgt. Bocko, Bocko was one of the officers who survived the Denny’s attack on police officers by Jamie Lichtenwalter. Sgt. Bocko died in a motorcycle accident several years after the attack. Mihalski claims to have been friends with Lichtenwalter and according to the KSAT article, Lichtenwalter did work for Mihalski’s mother for about eight months. During the intoxication arrest, Mihalski attempted to attack the officers and claimed he would kill them.
