When he sings “These faces facing me, they know what I mean” on stage it’s like he’s saying that to the people, to the fans, that went to the concert, they understand what he means, we are not alone in what we are going through, we are all together in a room screaming that everything somehow will be fine if we keep on staying alive. That’s what’s so special about tøp, they always try to create a space where you will feel understood

The first time I heard the line "In time I will leave the city, for now I will stay alive" I sobbed, and it still brings me to tears almost every time. Leaving the city doesn't mean death. He means that eventually he will leave his mental health challenges behind or overcome them, but for now he just needs to stay alive. I've used it in my own life as a motivational thing. "It sucks right now, but eventually it won't." "Stay alive" is also a bit of an anthem for their fans and comes from their song Truce, which I can't remember if you've reacted to before.

I have never gotten emotional over a song. This is one reason I like watching reactions. To help me understand what I’m supposed to feel from the music.

I agree, but in my worst days I often interpret it like standing 'on edge' where I know I will leave but being unsure about whether I'll leave by getting better OR by dying.

you caught it at the end and it all ties together - he's saying he knows eventually he will overcome his insecurities, but for now he's going to focus on just staying alive i think the "they" throughout the song is referring to his friends or people with the same issues he has, banditos, etc it's a great closing song because it wraps up trench, but also leaves you on the edge of what happens next

Tyler is a Lyrical, Deep Thoughts, and Story Telling Genius. I have NEVER seen a Band do something like this. It's the kind of depth you get from a Series of Books/Movies/TV Shows.

This is my absolute favorite song from Trench. Had goosebumps and i was about to cry while watching this video. The part where it says "the burning is so low its concerning, cause they know that when it goes off its a glorious gone"; THAT PART HITS HARD. I always thought "they" represented us the fans idk.

The lines ''in time I will leave the city, for now I will stay alive' were really comforting to me during covid lockdown because my mental health wasn't great and I felt like I was just keeping my head above water. It reminded me that things would get better eventually, for now it was enough for me to just focus on getting through one day at a time and stopped me feeling like a failure that I wasn't doing a lot. I think the end lines 'last year I needed change of pace, couldn't take the pace of change' are referencing the hiatus they took after Blurryface to write the album and the lines 'in Trench I'm not alone, these faces facing me, they know what I mean' are referencing a concert.

Leave the city is one of the best twenty one pilots songs and a perfect album closer. Has definitely a lot to do with the lore. and it´s one of those songs that´s so powerful performed live.

  • @Nuclearzomboids

For me, away from the lore, the song has a deeper meaning for suicide and how people use it as a last resort type thing. The fire representing the burning passion of something that’s keeping you alive and the fire is so low it’s concerning cause you can’t find that passion anymore. The “in time I will leave the city, for now I will stay alive” is like “I will die but maybe for now I will stay alive and keep working towards what I want and not go through with an early grave.” The ending as well rings for Tyler’s point of view, this album came out a bit later than their typical album releases which is two years and he had a little bit of a hiatus, he also references it in pet cheetah a bit saying “8 days straight 8 hours each and not one line” and with Leave the City it’s him saying he just had to change the pacing and not work on it as much. And the “these faces facing me” are the fans who waited and are seeing them live and such and we’re all being one big family. Sorry this is long but this is my take on leave the city (:

I also think the banditos use torches and fire to represent "fighting back", so I think he might be admitting to being worn down but not done either. Idk for sure, but I love the different interpretations!

Yup a torch is also used to see where ur going or to light up the path. Whatever that fire is, it’s what lights up your “dark world”.

Thank you for your reaction. To me it seems that Tyler has left Dema multiple times, but always gets dragged back by the bishops. He knows that he will get through his struggles again, his Depression, feeling of Emptiness, Mental issues and Anxiety, but for now he's fighting to stay alive. It's comforting to know that you'll get through it somehow. "Even though I am bruised, Face of contusions, Know I'll keep moving", "Fight it, Take the pain, Ignite it ". In the concert in Norway this was a powerful and emotional moment, when he sang "Though I'm far from home, In Trench I'm not alone, These faces facing me, They know what I mean", he was far from home but we all knew and felt what he was talking about. 💛

I was literally sitting here saying Don’t forget what Dema represents rather than just the story of escaping a city. & at that moment you got it 😂. I think the ‘they’ in this changes through the song , I think at the start it is the shadows, the demons knowing they have brought him down but then he says he will stay alive & they changed to his support group, friend’s & family & at the end it’s the fans, the ones who relate to & understand what is contained in his music, the ones that fight to stay alive because of this understanding & because of TØP

This song is about someone who is about to die, science can't make miracles, every person related to that person has made the best they could to help that person but the only thing they can do now is to make sure that one person can die in piece... I know that that's the meaning of that song because I've been through that situation a while ago...

In 2018 i reach my braking point. A massive build up of depressive thoughts gathered over the years triggered by some stressful job I had at the time, after I quitted, my life began spiraling down, eventually at the end of that year I Was considering self destruct. It did not happened obviously 😅, 2019 started feeling better and made a promise to enjoy life at the fullest, went to therapy and started Proyects always wanted to begin. But a couple weeks ago, for the very first time I've gotten down that dark dark path again, I always feered I might "come back to the city" and yet here I am, is def not as bad as it was I know i will be alright, i found a great sense of community with the clikkies, knowing I'm not the only one and that together we will overcome this. Although i will fight trough this, I just can't help feeling "defeated". I just cry every time I get to this song when I listen to the complete album cause I couldn't identify more at this point of my life that. "I gave my all, I'm tired now... I'm not gonna self destruct and I will leave the city eventually but for now I'll just survive"

Maybe Dima is symbolic for a tough life, and the city he is referring to is Dima. The hope you sensed in this song is because life in the Trench/Dima is hard, but he knows that he will be able to leave one day(die)

"They" are the fans. The boys are happy. Tyler's current life doesn't fuel the fire of his past lyrics. The current life he's living, one could say, is getting in the way of an artist's creative juices. "On the Outside" he talks about "kids trying to steal my vibe". He's a dad, and it's very full-fulling. Chlorine and Pet Cheetah talk about the struggle to get back to that place where he knows his fans want him to be. . But it's hard to be there and he might not want to be there anymore. I'm hoping for one more album from the boys. But they ARE gonna leave the city,..DEMA. They've slayed their dragons and I'll listen to whatever they put out. Formidable and Choker have become some of my favorite songs.

The way I see it is that Dema is a place of nothingness where nothing goes right, but nothing goes wrong either. As much as he hates the city, it’s the only thing keeping him alive. Leaving could kill him, but it could also save him. I also do believe that Tyler has given up on leaving Dema, at least for the time being. Eventually he’ll face the truth that leaving is the only way for him to feel true happiness, but for now he’ll keep letting them take control of him

fire is acrually a positive thing in the lore, its the passion that burns within him to fight the demons and create songs. in the 3 part musicvideo series off of trench, he gets captured again by the bishops in levitate. so, he is back in dema. that ties in with SAI being propaganda, using the band as a way to make us want to stay in dema. thats why most the songs on SAI are upbeat, easy to digest songs

My interpretation might be offensive to someone, but that's not my intention. In time I'll leave the city, for now....and soforth,to me is him wanting to leave the Christian community and all the guilt it gives him, but for now it sits firmly there. He will never leave god, just the toxic community surrounding it. Dema.
