Yes, most were I6 or small v-8, 3 speed manual (pain in the ass to drive) or automatic transmission. To get a car set up like the Bullitt car would have had to order new. Ford 4-speeds were rare since women bought most Mustangs new. By the time cars were 5-10 years old they had the bell beat out of them.

Mine was on the same production line at the same time & was built on the 2nd of February 1968! Mine was actually bought before the Bullitt! That’s as close as I’ll ever get to this original Bullitt but I’m still a bloody happy boy to have such an iconic car! I bought mine because Steve McQueen has always been an idol of mine. What a result! I’m just going out to look at mine & give it a big kiss!!! 😍 💋😎🤣👍🏼 Cheers from Oz🍻 P.s. I’ll take bids starting at $3,500.....😂

I'm a gearhead that dates back to the 1968 movie. The aspect I always marveled about, in that movie, was how the brakes on both cars held up during the chase scenes on the hilly streets of San Francisco. The drum brakes of that era were notorious for fading quickly under heavy braking; as the brake shoes would 'glaze over' when overheated. That chase scene should have lasted no more than 90 seconds before brake fade would have had both cars lose control and crash. I've shared the above with other gearheads familiar with 1960s automotive technology, and they were in agreement.

I fully agree 😁 I've always thought this too. Although my '67 Mustang has discs on the front, and the lighter 6 cylinder engine, the brakes will not handle hard use. The European cars I have owned in the past (mainly 1970s models) were not so bad but you of course still have to be on your toes. In todays traffic, driving along at normal speeds, drivers in modern cars accelerate and brake so hard (playstation generation). this means you really have to be fully alert driving an old car like this, as an emergency braking scenario can be scary! With that in mind, it's a wonderful thing to drive 😊😊

@@tejsgarageuk2830 It's great to know of someone that has an appreciation for brakes. And thanks for enlightening me about the connection of playstations to aggressive driving. I've always wondered why a driver, with a red-light ahead, is compelled to drive at full speed until braking at the last second. I'm fairly light on the brakes with my vehicles, as my first car was a 1967 VW Beetle; with brake shoes that were more suited for go-karts than for road-going vehicles. My current pickup truck that has 92K miles/148K km, is on its second set of front brake pads, but the rear brake shoes are original and still has several millimeters of life left in them. Ah! But the truck is also a manual shift; which in the US it is a means of being an anti-theft device; as auto-transmission trucks are more appealing for theft.

@@bloqk16 😊👍 Yes it's just how modern cars are so capable, that younger drivers (I passed my driving test in 1994) don't know any different because cars have advanced so much. I always run old - ish cars, but we usually have a modern one for my Wife. Currently this is a Toyota GT86, and I also own a 1998 Mercedes E55 AMG so can understand why some people drive like that, not that I agree with it 😁. It's also not having mechanical sympathy for a car that you treasure, and maintain yourself (as you and I do) as most cars on the road in the UK tend to be new leased cars, so people don't car about the wear and tear they inflict on them. The manual Truck sounds fun 👍😊 us Gearheads (or Petrolheads in the UK, as Gearhead over here can mean a drug addict 😅) are in the minority in the motoring population.

It's amazing that much cool remains in that car after so many years and all because Steve McQueen drove the hell out of it more than 50 years ago. He'd be in his nineties today, imagine how great it'd feel to see all this attention now, R.I.P. always remembered.
