Good to know. Thanks for the tip. Just bought an A99 from Walcott Radio in IA. Should be here in a day to two.

You will like it. Get that up in the air, and be assured, it will withstand the elements, VERY well. I do suggest that before you secure it, or at the very least, dont put the ladder away till you triple check the swrs. I just replied to a comment above yours, if you want to know how mine is holding up so far.

I also removed the lock washers also used conductive copper anti seize on the threads then after i tightned it up, i slipped a 6" piece of double walled epoxy enfused heat shrink over the joints and used a heat gun to shrink it down. Ever notice the antenna bending slightly at those threaded joints in a heavy wind?, not no more, the heat shrink eliminated that all together.

Thanks for the scoop. I sure like the look of the antenna better without the lock washers. I guess time will tell how it holds up.

This winter has been very windy (gusts of 70mph quite often) and extremely cold in Wyoming, i havent been on the radio for a while, and thought, i should see if The swr's are still good, considering its still vertical, about a week ago, i checked the swr's and wah lah! Still, almost non existent. Definitely a good antenna. So, this year alone its suffered extreme winds, -34 degree weather, (thats not a typo, negative 34) and still, stands tall and, broadcasts and receives like new.

Mine went together by hand everything fit good. I used the lock washers. You have to feed the lock washers to the bottom, or they will bind and not go all the way. The larger lock washer is bad on the company's part. the ID is too small to fit nice over the thread.

By the way @ at 2:43 (the 11 mm end wrench) is a 3/8 in. even though the 11 mm is a tighter fit. Let me suggest 1/2 in. for the top section and 7/8 in. for the middle section, put a rag or cardboard in the Channellock plier's jaws to prevent scratching. Please I see you are in the U.S.A. and the A 99 is Mfg in the U.S.A. use SAE./ inch wrenches. Or stick with the crescent wrench. Is there a UK version?? someone way in

No worries :) i know better now. The swrs are still set very good. Has been holding strong even with the even worse than normal wind. Thats Wyoming for you though. Wyoming we make sure EVERYTHING is anchored down. Heck, even the truckers that drive thru are chained to safety cable lol ..well, maybe not that bad buuuut..

Without the washers swr is harder to tune and you will have to tune it with the tuning rings and bring it down a bit as the antenna is shorter. And with time its going to weld together and you will break the antenna trying to take it apart.Happen To me.

I hear people paint the Antron? Is that good it bad? Is painting a good protection, what kinda paint to use?

  • @S.Masters

Idk.. ive never thought of that. I would do alot of research b4 painting it. Would you use a latex? Spray paint? Rust-oleum? Let me know if you decide to. IF you do, id definitely tape the connections first, then when dry remove the tape.

Lock washers have never been proven to add any mechanical purpose. We were just sold on the idea so long ago, it's difficult to not use them. I'm as brainwashed as anyone.
