Solar Panels on a Tesla

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Electric cars and solar panels seem like a match made in heaven: free, clean power as long as the sun shines. A self reliant, solar car that’s not dependent on the power grid could recharge sustainably from anywhere you dare to venture.
So, have you ever wondered about bolting solar panels on your Tesla? And why don’t all electric cars come equipped with solar panels for a sleek charge-on-the-go solution? In fact, with improving solar technology and clever ground-up engineering, a few self-charging solar cars are just at the point of coming to market. In this video we’ll delve into the practicalities of solar power for vehicles and have a look at some of the early adopters of this emerging technology.
In 2017, Elon Musk suggested that Tesla would offer optional solar tiles on the roof of the model 3, but later retracted the statement. This was Elon Musk’s idea in 2017 - that car roofs are small and inefficiently angled platforms for viable solar installations, and charging from a home solar installation made more sense. You could even charge at night on stored solar and cheaper off peak electricity. However, Elon might have changed his mind, confirming that the Cybertruck will offer a solar roof option on the truck’s bed.
To understand if a solar car could really work, we need to find out how much solar energy the surface of a car can capture, and how much range that energy will provide under realistic driving conditions.
So let’s take a sedan the size of a Tesla Model S, almost 5 m long and 2 m wide, and put a totally impractical, hypothetical array of solar cells covering the whole plan-view rectangular area of 10 square meters.
When it comes down to it, solar vehicles are all about efficiency. It’s a matter of energy to weight. A practical solar car would really need to be designed from the ground up with reduced weight and low aerodynamic drag, to create a vehicle with more favorable energy density. For as far as electric cars have come in the last decade, the energy density of gasoline is still far greater than lithium ion batteries.
Teams gather each year in Australia to race pure solar cars across the continent from Darwin to Adelaide under the scorching desert sun for the World Solar Challenge. Consistent winners of this class have been the evolving Stella series from the University of Eindhoven, the team from which Lightyear sprang in 2016. Lightyear one reevaluated every component of the car and used lighter materials like aluminum and carbon fiber, to build a lighter vehicle with the best aerodynamic coefficient of any car on the market. Four independently driven in-wheel motors also lower the cars weight, and improve powertrain efficiency.
Sono Motors on the other hand, are starting with a more affordable $29,000 compact solar car designed for urban use. In designing the Scion prototype. Sono’s proudest new technology integrates solar cells into polymer body panels to replace conventional painted metal bodywork.
Toyota has experimented with a demonstration Prius with high efficiency thin-film triple junction cells made by Sharp, and Hanergy Solar, a Chinese manufacturer of thin film panels, have also demonstrated prototype cars with panels that can harvest 8-10 kWh per day and supplied such panels to Aston Martin for their GTE racing car.
Most solar panels rely on cells made from semiconducting silicon crystals, which convert sunlight to electricity at around 15%-19%, but new technologies are in the works to create higher efficiency solar cells utilizing new materials. As the future unfolds, and more cutting edge solar technologies come to market, we can see self charging solar electric vehicles become more and more practical, as cells get more and more efficient. A future cell technology with efficiencies above 50% would be a game changer, and probably make solar cars ubiquitous.
Heavy batteries are a limiting factor in the feasibility of solar cars. A breakthrough battery with more favorable energy to weight characteristics would revolutionize electric transportation, and make solar cars far more realistic.
Promising new technologies that utilize materials like graphene, solid polymers, and ceramics are currently in research and development, and are poised to create the next generation of powerful batteries with higher energy density, greater service life, faster charging, improved safety, and potentially even lower costs.
So should you mount a solar panel on your Tesla to make it a solar tesla? Watch the video to find out.

Will you go to Heaven when you die? Have you lied, stolen, used God's name in vain, or lusted (which Jesus said was adultery, Mt. 5:28)? If so, God sees you as a liar, thief, blasphemer, and adulterer at heart. If you die in your sins, you will end up in a terrible place called Hell. But there's good news. Though we broke God's Law, Jesus paid the fine by dying on the cross: "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" On. 3:16). Then Jesus rose from the dead and was seen by hundreds. He fulfilled all the prophecies of the promised Savior. Please, today, repent and trust Jesus, and God will forgive you and grant you the gift of eternal life (Eph. 2:8,9). Then, to show your gratitude, read the Bible daily and obey it,join a Christian church, and be baptized. Visit NeedGod.com and LivingWaters.com.

The thing is electric cars tend to have a “phantom drain” where if you leave them in the sun they have to use the battery to keep the battery temperate to avoid damage. Add a solar panel to every electric car. It isn't about that being the only power source, but for the vast majority of drivers you can recoup a little power and put off doing a full charge for a few more days. Or have the same total range with a little bit smaller battery pack. However, there are a few of us that only ever park outside and drive very little that might never need a charge otherwise.

Solar enhanced vehicles are more likely to be a practical option for those who generally travel short distances intermittently. A great example of this type of vehicle is a solar enhanced golf cart - and, those are increasing in popularity every year. A solar enhanced Nissan Leaf, for example, would be a great option for someone who commutes to and from work or school no more than five to ten miles per day. Such an application could be nearly 100% self-sustainable by solar power, alone.

A video about it shouldnt be like this one. its should be about cost (price/weight/ design-look) versus benefits (kwh added / less to no vampire drain / battery life / range added ect) - its a bit like having a 100 kw solar panel on a house - which can only fully power some odd houses - but that isnt the point.

Here are three uses for a relatively small solar array on your car, van, truck, etc.: 1. Most new cars have vampire circuits, and a small charger could keep your battery topped off; 2. Batteries need to stay warm in cold weather, and a small heater could do that during the day; 3. To keep your interior relatively cool on a hot day you could run a small ventilation fan.

Current tech gives us about 10-25% on cloudy days according to this article: cleantechnica.com/2018/02/08/solar-panels-work-cloudy-days-just-less-effectively/ 3. Interesting video and thankful you did the math. That eased my mind and I can see this at some point working well for commuter cars. Any little bit well help but intending that breakthroughs keep coming and that within five years, it will be very, very possible to have electric cars with solar capability as well. I think by then, the new term will be "On a Sunny day, I can drive 450 miles and cloudy, eh about 380".

I liked your well researched article, but at minute 9:00 you mentioned that drag has a direct proportion to the cube of speed; however, the relationship is still significant but to the square of velocity.

@@thereaction18 Musk is not a talker like so many other manufacturers - he is a doer. He may be the only hope for the human species. If most vehicles in the world are electric it may stop global warming. And don’t tell me that’s not true - I lived through the Australian bush fires last year. NEVER have almost all of the forests in New South Wales burnt down. Last year they did. Billions of wild life killed. Thousands of houses destroyed.

@@gospelofthomas77thpearl22 You are such a sucker for hype. Anthropogenic global warming is a hoax. They are selling snake oil. They convince you of imaginary problems and sell you imaginary solutions. What a patsy. Try doing some math and science. Measure the amount of energy from sunlight per square meter. They pulled a kilowatt per square meter directly out of their ass and you swallowed it. Look at the efficiencies of energy conversion. If you think 7 miles range to a full day's charge on a good day is a good tradeoff, good luck with that.

Jolly Roger Basically free power but you need to significantly increase the profit on the technology to maintain a replacement return to the overall economy. I'm afraid that if it were so important to change then the technology would be practically free to ensure a fast adoption. It's still a public virtue display exercise rather than a concerted effort to replace all fossil fuels. The only true energy future is to significantly reduce our Western addiction to technology and thereby reduce all energy use thus presenting a new world to everyone. It's said that cloud computing storage facilities drain 20% of the world's electricity. It's high time we reassessed our lives and the impact progress is having on our world.

@@brynleytalbot778 A single year's worth of expenditures on Fossil Fuels would enable the replacement of all FF's by Solar / Wind / Renewables & Battery storage. This is mostly a matter of the WILL to do so...and not allowing Fossil Fuel Lobbyists to "bribe" politicians with PACs and campaign donations. Fossil Fuel still dominates a large portion of the political landscape through power and influence. It's literally a matter of making the commitment to replacing it. It's heading that way...but still moving way slower than it should. Cheers!

David C On bribes the oil industry when Obama was in power spent less in five years, I believe, than was frittered away on a green power scheme Obama backed just before the company went bankrupt, taking billions of dollars with it. The Al Gore campaign attracted hysterical followers but hasn't embraced balanced scientific research into the phenomenon. Anyone with enough cash and political clout can validate their theory but if it's just an emotive scrap we can't ascertain the truth about the situation. Fossil fuels in conjunction with green energy may well be our best strategy. A balance till the greener alternative is established as environmentally compliant. Green energy is already producing infrastructure that's not immediately recyclable so it's not wholly green - fibreglass turbine blades being buried in the desert in America. When green energy is stripped of the green economy label then it may be something worth pursuing. At the moment it's just another growth economy mission to increase Western commercial interests. Free of that bias, and free of lobbying fossil fuels bias, we could analyse unemotionally and find the most harmonious path to our growing energy wants. Or, if good sense prevails, reduce our energy consumption, especially in the mythical cloud computing world where 20% of all electrical power is consumed. Changing Western lifestyles will do more than becoming greener to maintain the illusion of economic growth being some perpetual energy machine that has no limits. Less means more for everyone. That's a green philosophy.

@@brynleytalbot778 Hi Brynley, I'm all for "Reduce, Reuse, Renewable". I don't own a car anymore and have shirts, clothes, etc. that are years (or decades) old in many cases...no "fast fashion" for me. OIL is absolutely the worst. Coal is dirtier but OIL causes / is the excuse for many modern wars, going back to at least WW2 (Japan attacks US, because cut off from OIL). The US Government (and many others) start wars over OIL / other FFs and it's not even close to how Many, MANY TRILLIONS have been spent mucking around in the Middle East and other parts of the world over OIL. OIL Dominance has to end...and the sooner it does...the more it makes up for any costs that are needed to get the human race onto renewables...PRIMARILY Solar + Batteries / Storage of Sustainable Energy. It's not even close how ridiculous we are as humans to continue to fight wars over resources like OIL, when the answer IS in fact shining its light on us nearly ever single day. While I agree with you whole heartedly, that we / they need to do WAY better with manufacturing / disposal / Recycling of energy production for renewables...Fossil Fuels are a death sentence for the human race. Solar is easily the greatest source of energy in the ENTIRE SOLARE SYSTEM. It keeps our tiny planet from freezing to just above absolute zero. All of the fossil fuels in the world could NOT stop the earth and all life on earth, from freezing if we did not have the SUN. It is absolutely a matter of math, science, engineering AND recycling / minimization of the materials to create solar energy. I'm all for reduction in unnecessary lifestyles...I have reduced mine by about 80%+ estimated...but humans are also not going back to living in caves or even 100% in log cabins. There are solutions and FF's are NOT part of that future for more than a few decades more, assuming we move to renewables + storage with great resolve. Do the big corporate interests need to be reigned in for creating excessive waste?? YEP! Burning Coal, Oil and Nat Gas need to go away within the next 50 years...period. Cheers and have a wonderful weekend!
