Solar & Hurricane Season Q & A ft Enphase Battery Storage

**Facebook Live Q&A Hurricane Season edition! **
Raul answers all your hurricane season related questions in regards to solar panels and backup battery storage. Please note, Cutler Bay Solar Solutions is located in Miami, FL therefor some of the rules and regulations may not apply to your area.
6:32 “Can solar panels survive a hurricane?”
7:42 “Will my solar panels continue to produce if the grid goes down?”
8:46 “I have (2) 10 kw batteries. I turned off my main power and the batteries kicked in but my WiFi turns off when the air conditioner turns on. I think the power goes out temporarily, what can I do about that?
10:29 “If a hurricane is coming, do I need to protect my solar panels in any way?”
10:56 “If it’s a cloudy day, will I produce enough energy to power my battery?”
12:06 “How long will the battery keep your house running after a storm?”
14:00 “If there is any damage caused by a hurricane to my solar panels, Is this a warranty issue or an insurance claim?”
15:19 “How does a generator compare to the Enphase battery?”
19:43 “Enphase Battery Storage has some Storm features built into it, can you tell us about those?”
21:23 “What makes Miami-Dade installs so hurricane resistant compared to the rest of the country?”
26:20 “You said the battery goes into storm mode, is your house running on FPL (local electricity company) at that time or still just the panels?
27:03 “Is it okay to change my meter and go to savings mode with the batteries?”

Great info, I’m looking at an Enphase System in my state. I think it’s one of the best

Great Video Raul, i heard enphase batteries and inverters are very good overall but also heard overall from building biologists that inverters generate a lot of harmonic distortion in some low and high frequencies (dirty electricity). Have you guys worked in scenarios that the owners were concerned about it? Any experience on that angle would be appreciated. Tks and great work

Ive checked using a dirty electricity meter, there was no change in values..either when solar is on or off during the day

Does Home Depot offer your/their solar service throughout the country? If not which states do they offer it?

10.6kw via 27 Q-Cells 10’s at 400watts. 27 IQ8A’s 2 Encharge 10’s. Installed on standard single story with shingle roof…. Parts, Labor and Installed total Cost was $52,000 back in summer of 2022 in Florida. System Has worked Great! I was operating fully “off grid” due to my electric company not having the net meter for over 4 months. They allowed us to power the system but just couldn’t credit us for any extra power we sent to the grid…. Which we sent a lot!!!Which meant we just ran off the battery at night for 4 months straight so that we didn’t have to buy power from the grid. We have 1850 sq house. We had a Soft Start installed on our Central A/C. We got in the habit of only turning on the standard electrical water heater during peak sun after the battery was fully charged…. Same with using our very large clothes dryer during peak sun after batteries were topped off. Surprisingly we found best use of power was to have the A/C cranked down a little extra low during the hot days and then turn the a/c up a little after the sun goes down making the a/c work less at night while still having the temp you want when you sleep.. I like it cold! If I did it again what I would have changed…. 1) got more panels to have extra power during multiple cloudy days in a row like in a Nor’easter. Extra 5-10 panels wouldn’t have made much difference in the long range and would be very nice to have in grid down situations my opinion 2) I would have my panel arrays split up more evenly pointing SE and other have SW…. That is Not the most Energy Productive BUT that flattens the “Duck Curve” giving us more usable power and Less time that we are drawing off the battery.

@@maddeusdoggeus1 thanks for the info!! It's nice to know two enphase 10s could last you through the night. That's a really good idea on cooling everything down during the day. You might only need two or three night cycles of the ac. I'm guessing your batteries were probably full around 1pm then?

It’s an electrical sub panel connecting batteries. The design of the battery storage system is unique and will vary from home to home.
