Sodium and Chlorine Reaction - The making of table salt

An Erylmeyer flask is filled will chlorine gas by the reaction of hydrochloric acid and potassium permanganate. Sodium metal is placed into the flask and the reaction is catalyzed when a few drops of water is placed on the sodium metal in the flask. What results is an exothermic reaction that produces a white smoke full of NaCl or sodium chloride dust.

    Two things, 1) far more impressive if he started with two clean flasks and measured amounts of chemicals to guarantee chlorine production straight away. 2) A minor quibble but, as a deaf person, it would be good if enough space was left at the bottom of the screen for closed captions. The sodium, and later salt, could not be seen for much of the time because the captions obscured them until the camera was moved.

    Is it possible to use this reaction as a form of renewable energy? I've been wondering about how to use the byproducts of sodium and chlorine in saltwater electrolysis for hydrogen collection as fuel, but couldn't the embodied energy in this reaction also be used to further the efficiency? Could this combustion be used possibly in expansion much like an engine where the colloid is ejected like CO2? How could we safely use this reaction? Could it be used more for it's heat produced than thermal expansion?

    I would bet there is more sodium hydroxide in there than NaCl and that is a chunk of NaOH not NaCl. The fact that you poured water directly onto the Na (s) leads to another reaction and the Na + Cl --> NaCl is more like a secondary or even tertiary since there is also H + Cl reaction and Na + O2 reactions going on in there not to mention the Zn reaction that I saw. In conclusion I think you just wanted to see the Na light up like a fire work

    The sand is to protect the glass, no? What if, instead of sand, you placed the flask in a water bath? Wouldn't it be simple then to isolate the NaCl by rinsing with a small amount of water and evaporating the water afterward?

  • @MrGrodskiChemistry

    @MrGrodskiChemistry

    Yes that is possible but I do believe the heat released in this reaction would be at rate greater than the water could absorb and thus crack the glass.

  • @MrGrodskiChemistry

    The white cloud produced as a result of the chemical reaction is really small particles of solid sodium chloride suspended in air. I would suspect that one could taste this suspended salt but it is not advisable since there will be some unreacted chlorine gas that could be in the flask.

    i thought Na and Cl2 will react without activating the Na with water. Both Na and Cl2 are extremely reactive. strange..

  • @MrGrodskiChemistry

    @MrGrodskiChemistry

    +Tokaji Leo The issue is that the Na will have an oxide layer due to it reacting with oxygen. The water will will help expose the sodium to the chlorine. All reactions require activation energy.

    ok i see now. one more question: can you use HCl gas instead of Cl2? what that would do? could be interesting reaction. and very intensive I think. also it would react with the sodium oxide layer.

    Why using hydrochloric acid and potassium permanganate to produce Cl2 when you can simply just get a cylinder of pure Cl2, fill your flask with it and react it with elemental Na ?

    +FessUpWithCara It would require a tremendous amount of heat as NaCl is an ionic compound with a very stable crystal lattice structure. The salt structure has a very high melting point, which is a property of ionic solids, due to the stable (low energy) crystal structure and the electrostatic attractions between the positive and negative ions.
