Soccer in the States: Saint Louis CITY SC Welcomes MLS to CITYPARK

In this episode of Soccer in the States, I visited CITYPARK in Saint Louis, Missouri to experience Saint Louis CITY SC's first home game in MLS. Saint Louis is referred to as America's First Soccer Capital, and with the top flight finally in the city, STL will get to show their prowess on the biggest stage.
This video and all others in the "Soccer in the States" series are created totally independent. It's a one man operation to get to the city and film it all. Any support helps and I appreciate any love as I follow my dream to tell the story of soccer in the United States.

When I moved to Atlanta in 1987, I was so stoked that there were pickup games in the park. I'm from the rural South, never played more than 3-a-side because there were so few people into the game. Didn't take long for someone to shove my soul in their back pocket. I asked another player about it, he said "Yeah, don't try to duel with that guy. He's from St. Louis!" Over the years, I learned about that region's love for (and impact upon) the American version of the game. When they announced ATL (good soccer town, but only since the 1960s) was finally awarded our franchise, I thought "Before St.L gets *theirs*?!?" Thanks for the great video, I want to see that stadium for myself now! And to St. Lou CITY, great start. I knew that 'hell was coming to breakfast' when you were announced, but didn't expect it this soon.

Yessssssss I was waiting for this one, absolutely made my day seeing it come up in my sub feed! 👌 Having Charlotte and St. Louis in the league now feels like two long overdue moves for MLS, and I'm glad to see both the team and their supporters have started with such a massive statement. They're going to be a hard team *not* to root for here in year one, and I'd love to see them make the playoffs come October. I hope you enjoyed the rest of the trip to St. Louis, too! Looks like you got to see the Arch, but did you go up to the top?

There is a real community vibe going on with this team. The first game had people in our section coming up to us and introducing themselves! When does that ever happen? Good job with the video. You got the early on soccer background correct with immigrants mainly some Italian but what followed has been many years of Catholic Youth League soccer from the 1950s both boys and girls and those of better talent joining youth soccer clubs. Now St. Louis also has the largest Bosnian immigration in the country following the Yugoslavian war where soccer rules. I did not grow up Catholic and went to a public school where we only played soccer 2 weeks a year in gym class. I grew up a baseball and American football fan. I just cannot say enough good things about the ownership of Enterprise and others to privately fund a new soccer stadium. After the Stan Kroenke St. Louis Rams debacle refusing to be part of a new Football stadium for the much larger L.A. market in the NFL, there was sure not going to be any public funding support for a new soccer stadium. They will be rewarded for doing so. I am also glad to see the great support for the XFL Battle Hawks even though they are like a minor league football team. Team ownership is key to having a great organization.

@@Anthony.LaRosa Glad to help. Even though I mention not growing up a soccer fan,,my wife is Catholic and our 3 kids grew up playing in the Catholic Youth soccer league (CYC). It's impressive and I think since it goes back to the 1950s (boys and girls) has played a large role in why there is so much soccer enthusiasm here. Select soccer clubs are like an upgrade for the youth who really excel.. My three very grown up kids are all very excited about the new soccer team.. Now grandkids play in the CYC league. That being said, I do like watching an occasional Premier League game shown here, and seeing all the enthusiasm of the announcers and their fans. This coming from a long time Cardinals baseball and Blues hockey fan and disappointed football fan since the Rams left , but we now have a minor league football XFL team called the Battle Hawks as a replacement. .

I think MLS should dump the draft concept& focus on their academies more often. These draft players take up unnecessary roster slots that should be filled up by academy players. There's no need to pick random players every season when they can literally just promote a player from their academy who actually knows a thing or 2 about the team identity

  • @frenchchicken2799

NYRB focuses a lot on their academy, same with FC Dallas and NYCFC, Philly as well, But i agree, the draft is kinda bad but then again i do like how those who cant afford some academies, since only 4 are free, they can go pro from college.
