But I felt zero pain when it happened but the recovery was bad. I ended up becoming a opioid junky because of it. Well that and the fact that I found my drug of choice. But the good news is I wouldn’t trade 1 second of it because I’m the man I am today because of my addiction. Wow I just noticed tomorrow makes my 7 years 4 months clean and sober. You generally get a 5 minute major on both sides for a fight, where neither team is shorthanded and both men are back in 5 minutes, unless one gets injured. You see them talking first a lot because if only one drops his gloves, he is the only one that gets a penalty, so they both agree to it, and if one backs out and draws a penalty, everyone on the ice knows he is a bitch. The refs only let the fight go on if two willing participants square up. Once it no longer seems like two willing participants, they break it up. There is actually a whole section of rules for fights, haha. Hockey is amazing.

  • @TooBokoo

And furthermore, refs stand back and let them tire themselves out, usually until they fall on each other and then the refs pile on to break it up. They're not getting in between two pissed off players and catching a fist. That's why they let them go at it.

@Rufio nowadays? 99% of the time, if you touch a goalie, you better be willing to scrap. there are occasional exceptions to that, but those are only if it was visibly accidental, and even that isn't a free pass. i can think of one instance where the guy "blew a tire" driving the net and plowed the Colorado goalie. the players were more forgiving than the ref. one of the players said "nobody is saying you did it on purpose" to the guy, and the ref gave a penalty believing intentional contact

I guess when you’re used to watching soccer with players on foot playing on an enormous field, that hockey would seem fast and violent. As someone who started walking on Monday and on Friday was learning to skate, hockey is just part of growing up Canadian. You’re responsible for the 360* around you at all times. The fighting is just part of the strategy. Many players have been recruited specifically for their fighting abilities. I miss the old days when the fighters would punch each other in the face until they were tired out. None of this one punch stuff.

"They are commentating the fight" Yea, it's part of the sport. Not as much nowadays but back in the 90s and 2000s, fighting was a way to keep you goal scorers safe from big hitters. If someone tried to step up and hit one of your goal scorers, the coach would throw an enforcer (yes, they have a specific name for fighters in the nhl) and get him to beat the brakes off the guy who tried to hit your star player. It's part of the sport and adds entertainment. Coaches will also put enforcers out to start a fight to try and flip momentum to their advantage in the game

All because of Lemieux’s cheap shot on Kris Draper the previous year. It was the best retribution I’ve seen in sports. For those new to hockey; search for this fight along with anything Bob Probert or Joe Kocur. Also, Unwritten rules of hockey: Fighters/Tough guys never fight the skill players. If someone gets knocked down/out from a punch, the fight is over. Never shoot a puck into opponents goal after the play has been whistled dead. I was watching the game in person for the fight at 8:22 in this video. The Islanders player who won the fight was calling for the paramedics to come help his fallen opponent within a second of him hitting the ice. I used to work in a store where a decent number of NHL players for the Islanders would shop and the Islanders enforcer Matt Martin was by far the kindest and most gracious player I've ever encountered. The kicker: he was looking to buy a copy of The Art of War.

Love your reactions. Everyone got a 5-minute major for fighting. Fighting needs to exist in the NHL, because when large men are flying down the ice at 45 kilometers an hour, a cheap shot could be career-ending and potentially life-threatening, as you rightly pointed out the blades on everyone's feet and the ice being as unforgiving as concrete. Knowing you'll get your lights punched out keeps the really bad cheap shots at bay, for the most part. It'd work well in footie too. Take a dive and hold your shin like you've been shot and you'll get shit-kicked, and the guy who beats you will go sit on the side for 5 minutes, then be right back out..

It includes multiple whole team brawls at center ice, goal keepers fighting, players leaving their skates to make leaping attacks, and all for revenge of a dirty hit the year before. The Colorado Avalanche of the late 90s were a collection of the worst people in sports and the Redwings were considered a soft European team that just happened to include about half of the Russian Red Army team at that point. It's a classic. Well worth watching the entire thing if you can find it.

Fighting and hockey go hand in hand and always have. It's a very fast and aggressive sport thats finally getting the recognition it deserves. Hockey is the toughest fastest team sport in existence and always has been! Also potentially most deadliest being everyone has 2 razor sharp skates on!

Adam, you have to understand the intensity of the game of hockey, when played at a high level. You have 10 men, huge men, flying around at 40 km/hr, in an area less than half the size of a soccer field, after one object, the puck. These guys make millions of dollars to get that puck, in a full body contact job. With sticks in their hands. You bet there is going to be physical conflict. In the old days it was a deterrent to anybody taking cheap shots or trying to injure, or as punishment for actions that a 2 minute penalty didn't get the point across. Don't do that again. These days, because of a wider audience that doesn't know what this game encompasses, they are shocked just like you. It's easier to understand if you understand the history of the game where there used to be a ring of people around the rink. That's all. Personal and team honour was a personal thing. Now television, and all of the sudden, soccer and badminton players and mommies have an opinion.

Glad to see you're enjoying the sport. If I may make a suggestion, look into the history of the Stanley Cup. It is one of the oldest trophies in all of professional sports; it borders on a holy grail for hockey players. Also, look up Stanley Cup moments and highlights. The more you learn about the Cup, the more it makes sense why players get emotional when hoisting it over their heads.

There's the old joke that sometimes you go to a boxing match & a hockey game breaks out. Anyone who has never been to an NHL game should go at least once. There's always something interesting to watch when ten 200 lb men are skating 25-30 mph in a confined area with the goal of hitting each other. Besides the hard hitting & rough parts, there's also nothing like watching very talented skaters make extremely quick pin-point passes finished with an accurate laser-like shot for a goal or to see a goalie contort himself & stretch out to keep the puck out of the net. Also, the eruption of the crowd when the home team scores (especially in a tight game) is really fun. There's a tension that builds before a goal & you just feel the atmosphere explode when the puck hits the net. It's my absolute favorite spectator sport. My wife knew nothing about hockey before we went to a couple of games & she fell in love with it. Now she's a die-hard hockey fan. Not just a home team fan but a fan of the sport. I kind of created a monster but we've had great times over the years at games. Tip for people new to the game: If you don't have any clue about the rules, look up "icing" & "offsides". Understanding those two calls will help you figure out the flow of the game. The other stuff is more self-explanatory, where once you see it called once or twice, you will be able to recognize it. Icing & offsides are the most frequent reasons play is stopped & not the easiest to discern what the calls are just watching the game so tracking down a good explanation of both will make the action much easier to follow.

I'd love for this sweet Irish boy, to see the clip of the outraged Nordiques fan, who scaled the glass, ran across the ice, and jumped into the Buffalo Sabres bench, and started hitting anything in an Sabres sweater. Which is in my opinion, is reason enough to give Quebec back it's franchise !

Played hockey for 20 years. Fighting g is part of it but not everything. It’s an aggressive but respectful sport and fights happen when you cross the line of respect or sometimes just to get your team pumped up if your losing. It’s great. Handle it and then when it’s done it’s done. As soon as someone is knocked down you stop. Great video

Hockey has always been my favorite to watch. The game is so fast-paced and keeps you engaged. Over the years, the fist fighting is less common. Now it's more body checking your opponent as hard as possible into a wall. Lol Still fun to watch though. 😂

Hockey is pretty much taking the concept of soccer and making it appeal to Americans and Canadians. For one thing, the field of play is a lot smaller, so things are happening almost all the time. You've got big, tough men with blades on their feet and sticks in their hands sliding around in a frozen arena of pain. You've got a sport where not only is fist fighting allowed, its actually strategic and teams can have a special player whose _entire role_ is to pick a fight. Because according to us, soccer is fine, but it could use more violence and less traction.

I love when people shit on hockey. That just tells me it’s time to show them a game and change their mind. If you can’t understand the physical demands of every aspect of the sport then you probably need a bib to catch all that drool coming out of your face hole. Also I’m american and a lifelong hockey fan more specifically a Blues fan. It’s actually the only sport I really enjoy watching or being a part of.

@@mikestiles373 There were a total of 18 fighting majors on March 26, 1997, and I am pretty sure all of them happened after the puck dropped, some in the middle of play. The Avs got a powerplay or two, so I'd imagine the Red Wings got some sort of extra penalty for instigating or whatever the rule was back then. Fastest toughest game in the world. When two men moving 25-30 mph collide the kinetic energy generated is huge. The Canadian boys are the toughest. Big tough boys from small town Canada that grew up playing like this. That said there is a price to pay. Some guys have had a hundred fights or more. Brain injury. The NHL is not even the toughest league by a long shot. Fun to watch your reaction.

Cheer is not what you think especially when it comes to training and competing. You can miss two practices before your benched.
