SOAP Into Residency | Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me

Sorry everyone. I had to cut out some parts of this video after posting. I was recommending to email the program directors and state your interest in joining their program, in order to try to stand out from everyone else. But I believe that’s a NRMP violation to reach out to program directors before they reach out to you… But if you get interviewed by a PD then go ahead and send them a genuine email stating why you belong there and that you’re committed to the end! Keep emailing them. Don’t stop. Flood their inboxes 😂😅
If you are in the middle of the SOAP process for residency, watch this video. Do this to stand out from everyone else.
Good luck to all medical students. Don't give up, its not over yet.

a correction: the PDs will start calling the day after applications open. for 2023, you would receive the non-match email monday, submit your app again, and come tuesday morning PDs will download and start cold-calling to schedule interviews, not on wednesday.

I’m rooting for you guys! I’m so sorry you have to go through this. It’s a broken system. Regardless keep going! It’s not over until it’s over! May your grit be rewarded! Quick note though. I thought it was a SOAP violation to contact programs before they contact you. Pls SOAP applicants verify on NRMP because I could be wrong.

Short answer: do everything right. Longer answer: You said "stand out," remember that. Here we go. Pass Step 1 the first time you take it and get a good Step 2 score, 240+ (much higher for competitive specialties.) Score filters are real, programs receive thousands of applications sometimes. Publish one research project per semester. Or try to get at least 3-4 before you apply. Look into residency programs now and do rotations/sub-i's to get interviews at them (this can be difficult since you can't use VSAS.) This process favors "who you know" over "what you know." Go hard in clerkships. Get amazing LORs. Some programs care about 3rd year rotation grades, so get the highest marks you can. Practice interviewing now. Find good interview questions and have perfect answers for them. Interviews are a performance; you need to learn how to perform. Start thinking about your personal statement, why are you even doing this ridiculous medicine thing? Finally, realize that there is still a stigma of IMGs in general. Some doors will not open for you, ever. Some are just harder. I know of some AUC students who got into Ortho and Yale residencies this year. You just gotta be good bro. Good luck, but more importantly, push hard and do the work.

Research is always one thing. When you do clinicals if possible so case studies/find a project someone is doing. Honestly rock out on your rotations. All the shelf exams matter but especially the shelf exam of the field you want to match in matters a lot so you want to really do well on it. Letters of rec also go a long well. Basically once you get to the hospital show them that you’re a personable hard worker and that you’re willing to do the work to become the best physician possible
