It's finally here, my favorite civ to play when I first getting used to this game. :D I love everything about them. My main play style is defensive, and Byzantine buildings have more HP as well as cheap counter units to defend against AI raids, etc. And the Cataphracts are just so cool overall. Also Byzantines have both Paladins and Arbalesters which are the units I make a lot when playing against AIs, combo with Cataphracts and my civ shines real bright. P/S: I once set Byzantine's civ theme jingle as my ringtone at some point and it scared the shit out of my sister. 11

A little correction about trample damage : The 5 damage are dealt around the Cataphract and not around the targeted unit.

I was like cool spaming Trash units... Hera proceeds to not produce one single trash unit

1. they never separated from the western roman empire, it was one empire 2. it lost italia to the germans(holy romans) and remained an eastern roman empire for the remainder of its history.

Having watched a few of these, I really appreciate that Hera limited his vision to what he could see for a lot of this match. Occasionally looking over at MBL’s base is great for commentary and perspective, but actually watching the match with the fog of war on feels much more informative for me as a noob. Great video, as always.

yesterday was my first time not being obliterated on hard mode and was using this civ. After 3.5 hours I had to give up. I thought youtube was monitoring me again by recommending this video.

they started adding fortress to the rank ladder map rotation and i've gone up 120 elo just playing byzantines! catas are crazy OP. i feel bad for the poor souls who got goths against me 11, i went full hand cannons and cataphracts and melted his insane hordes.

I'd say that the video can't be a good showcase of the civ simply because Hera doesn't make its unique unit, but turns out that he's so didactic while talking fast and so a lot of content, that I ended up enjoying it quite a lot! Congrats, man!

Some civs have a useless unique unit, so I don't think one has to showcase it in order to show off the civ. Do boyars have to be used to show off Slavs? Or teutonic knights? Or jaguar warriors?

@@ottomann4846 Even good UUs like the cataphract aren't always a good call. They're so expensive to tech into which slows you down, and while they are strong against the normal cav counters they still lose to brute force from knights or crossbows.

Hey Hera just before the game ended, wouldn't it be a good idea to use a "suicide horse" or two to send to the back of mbls base? You lose a unit but you can see exactly what buildings he has, you spot the stables and pre emptively go camels, if you see mass barracks then you can do cataphracts

Hey Hera, something that worries me about this reactive playstyle is that in your case your map was pretty good. But what if your map was bad? Forward berries in an open space or something say. If you don't make any army what if he comes with MaA and makes a tower to deny your berries or something like that? I feel like by the time you get a range up you are super far behind. What would you do in that situation?

This highlights how many split second decisions and micro reliant moments playing well comes down to. So easy to loose a whole army of crossbows in 10sec of not paying attention

Hey Hera, how come you didn't lure your side boar first? Also something I have been doing is that if I find my boar before making my 5th or 6th villager I will send that villager to lure the boar to decrease the chance of being lamed. What do you think about that?

I'd like to see Koreans covered next. On paper they come across as underpowered, and yet a lot of the times they don't perform quite poorly enough to score in bottom 5 by winrate.

They have one sure win strat if you can pull it off perfectly. Until that strat is nerfed, they won't be on bottom 5.

It's very simple, last armor upgrade is extremely important vs ranged units (ranged units have low damage for example 7 - 12 pierce, so a reduction of 2 is huge). Melee vs melee it's ofc better to have the last attack upgrade because + 2 damage is better than 1 armor also armor doesn't matter as much cause attack ratings are way higher (standart champ has 17 - paladin 18 etc). As you can see taking 2 off 10 damage is quite a bit more than the melee dif so if the enemy has any ranged units defence upgrades will always be better. If it's melee only , only then the last attack upgrade would be better.

I wonder how good a Skirm/Pike opening is. I recently learned how wonderful a Goth Skirm/Man-at-Arms opening is given how popular Skirm/Archer is, and Byzantine feels like it might have a leg up thanks to their large discount. Not to mention, Byzantine is so flexible, it's free to tech into almost anything in reaction.

I what situations would yo go keeps for defense? I really want to know because I love the idea of having towers all around my base for preventing raids.

Logistica also gives +6 bonus damage against infantry for their Cataphracts.

Do you feel that Byzantines and Malians plays kind of similar? They are both quite versatile but with Malians missing Halberdiers and Paladins.

I think what makes byzantines so strong is that they have so much versatility, if played well I think Byzantines can be one of the best civs for new and mid elo players but high elo i think theyll fall behind bc they are a jack of all traits but master of none.

Was this really that good of a display of the byzanzine strengths?

it makes 5 pure dmg to everything besides the catapract, and it stacks with another cataapract but the range of the trample dmg its very limited. like 1 tile

Math stolen from Spirit of the Law, but the Cataphract has 16 anti cavalry armor, so the 32 bonus damage that Halbs do against cav is cut in half and they only deal 16. Camels do, in fact, 0 bonus damage because their bonus damage gets completely negated by the Cataprhact's special armor. Same with every unit that does less than 16 bonus damage against cav (like Pikes, Kamayuks, Genoese Crossbows, etc). Basically, against Cataphracts, throw out the window all the knowledge you have about anti cav units. Halbs are still decent, but once Logistica is in, they are gonna get destroyed

'I rather have armor over damage, i know how some of you feel about having more damage, but i will defend it' Of course you will, you'll have the armor.

Do you recommend this civ for lower elo’s?

Pierce armor, for TC arrow fire, that allowed the early base assault. Also, Cavalier is an Imperial Age unit, non-elite Cataphract a Castle Age one. That means, better stats overall for the more advanced unit, short-term better choice.

If I can't quick wall (quickly at least), should I just run my exposed villagers to the TH directly? Contrary to what Hera did in the first defense, where he let his villagers pick berries and he still had one in the far right?

I'd also like to know! Right now I either run to the TH or fight with vills.

The only thing I dont like is the alck of bloodlines, just beacuse I really like to go for scouts on feudal. Other than that the byiz have everything to be one of my favorite civs.

you did not explain why they did not have masonry and architecture. Or is it better to have more hp than having masonry and architecrue techs?

Its the game balance since they have the extra hp giving them those techs would make buildings too tanky

I remember some maths about this but I can't remember the source (tried looking) The 40% bonus is roughly equal to or better than 20% hp you get from both those techs and their additional armour bonuses. I think this is most pronounced on castles which have a massive amount hit points. Also their bonus effects walls, masonry and architecture do not. So they have extremely durable walls. Finally its free.

The lack of blast furnace is terrible in my opinion. If you imagine halbs vs halbs, you deal 8 damage (-3 armor of the opponnent), 5 damage dealt, when the other guy will deal 7. It's like 40% more. Nearly the same applies to hussar, 6 damage instead of 8. It's getting even worse when fighting something with a bit of melee armor. Hussar deals 4 damage to knight, instead of 6. 5 damages to villagers or champions instead of 7. For me Byzantine is a jack of all trades but master of none, they have cataphract, hussar and paladins but not bloodlines and blast furnace...meh. They have bombard canon, but not siege engineer. They have all the infantry but not the last attack. Basically they just have correct arbalest but no special bonus for them (compared to Britons, Ethiopians, Mayans, Vietnamese) The discount on trash is nice but in post-imp scenario you have infinite food and wood anyway and it gets to map control, pop efficiency helps with that and as mentioned above their trashs are not pop effective. In late game the best trashes are probably the halbs for the bulk of the army pushing with rams and hussars for the raiding...having sub-performance in those two areas for a "trash civ" that sucks a lot.

Finally Byzantines Kreygasm Hera do you really rate blast furnace higher than ring archer armor? I feel that almost every civ that misses ring archer armor looses to arbalest. At my pleb level I dont really see where this gives you a good advantage because melee units already deal a lot of damage once they close the distance. At least thats what I experienced lately with burgundians KEKW 1

What about camel instead of cavalier? Counters cav / hussar better, you get a discount and if he goes champs you had 30-35 arbs.

@@Manouil_III Well I don't think it would matter that much, you get 1.63 camels for the same price so only tc woudn't be very scarry if he had 20 camels or 13 cavalier.
