So You Want To Own a Wolfdog?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Since so many of you have been asking what it’s like to own a wolf dog and how you can get one...
I know there are a lot of articles and videos out there telling you all about wolf dog ownership. Some are from professionals that actually know what they are talking about, and most are… well.. from people who assume they know what it’s like. There’s a HUGE difference between the two. I wanted to take the time to talk to you guys about this because many people have seen my exotic pet videos on my youtube channel and have a ton of questions I’m hoping to answer here. Please feel free to share this video with any of your friends who may want a wolfdog as a pet!

Do you have any kids?
What kind of Containment can you provide?
Where do you live? Have you checked the laws?

Of all the Wolf Dog You Tube channels. This is a Great channel. The young man was knowledgeable. He gave good advice when he said...If you want a Wolf Dog just because they are Beautiful dont . A Wolf Dog is alot of work . I take mine for walks 6 times a day no less than half a mile each time. Usually it is 1 to 2 miles each time. They eat alot. In some States like Missouri when the go to the Vet . They cant go to just any Vet . You have to take them to a Vet that works with Wolf Dogs. Guy's if you want to get a wolf dog do your homework. Research and make a smart decision. Off top if you live in a City it's not going to work. These dog's need to be in the country. Let me tell you a true story about a woman l know that had one . He was 85 pounds all white. The lady had him hiking with her in the woods. A big Deer ran across the trail in front of them. She watched her Wolf Dog chase it down through a ravine. The Wolf Dog was chasing it to eat it . The Deer ran towards a small cliff and jumped up over 7 feet landed on the top of the cliff. The Wolf Dog couldn't jump as high he only got 5 feet. He impacted the rock wall and broke his neck. Now a normal dog would have not tried to jump 7 feet up running at full speed. Her Wolf Dog died because he heard the call of the wild . She saw all of that as it happened. They are not like a normal dog. Please Please research and if you decide you want one Great they are truly Amazing animals.

My brother bought a wolf dog "because they're cool looking." And boy did you hit the nail on the head. Hes had the wolf for 6 years and the only reason theyre not homeless on the street is because hes guilted my parents into spending their life savings on him and the wolf and his other hybrid. Why? Because he cant rent apartment. The wolf needs a "house" so my parents are in debt renting a house for them. Does my brother have a job? No. Because the wolf cant be alone. He chews through every harness he has and tries to escape. He actually did escape many times (my brother would never put his wolf in a kennel), even after the wolf escaped, ran into someones house and killed their 15 year old chihuahua. The scream from that house when they found their pup in the wolfs mouth was enough to traumatize someone for life. It didnt deter my brother at all. If it happened in the U.S., the wolf would have been put down. Now theyre both in the U.S. and he has unrealistic expectations that the jobs hes applied for in agriculture will be just fine with having a wolf running around free and unneutured. Hes already had to leave jobs because of problems with the wolf. Yet, hes hoping for the best and never prepares for the worse. He is a slave to the wolf. Now he has to pay someone $20 an hour to keep their eyes on the wolf at all times. I babysat the wolf and it chewed through the harness when I turned my head for 5 seconds and when I turned back around, it was off leash and ready to jump over the short wire fence into a neighborhood full of small dogs. I had to put my body between the wolf and the fence for 2 hours until my brother got home. It was traumatic. When you dont have at least $50,000 in the bank and dont already OWN a house or farm or have a job or someone ready to babysit your wolf everyday, or a kennel or a wall around your property higher than 6ft., then getting a wolf dog can be your inevitable road to homelessness so fast itll make your head spin and you wont even know what hit you. Oh, expect your seatbelt and seat covers, sofa covers, cushions, beds, everything to either break or get chewed up. You'll never be able to sell your old stuff because its all.chewed up. And prepare to not have children for as long as the wolf's expected to live. I still cannot believe my brother didnt even go to sanctuary or learn about what it takes to own a wolf before getting one. His own life ended when he got the wolf. He'll never live up to his potential becaue he has to lug around this huge wolf EVERYWHERE HE GOES. If he leaves the wolf in the suv (you better own a truck or suv or trailer if u plan on your wolf ever riding inside. If my brother steps into tue grocery store for 5 minutes to buy whole chickens for his wolf

Wolfdog owners with no experience, time, or money adopting one for the sole reason that they are cool looking, never turns out well... I want others to read this and understand this is a very real scenario for anyone wanting a WD.

I have actually answered this question many times before. I did a video about it you can check out here too: kzread.info/dash/bejne/goV5zqNwmKS4eLA.html Regardless though, that's a great question actually. I've been working with exotic animals and have over 20 years experience working with animals like these. Most of them were saved from being put down but some of the pets I currently have are because after YEARS of rescuing and dealing with SICK and crazy wild animals, I wanted to have one of my own that I could take hiking with me miles up into the mountains and wouldn't get tired; a dog that still had enough wild instincts to have their own mind instead of one that follows you around like a sheep. I wanted a dog that was big, beautiful, and had lots of character... I know I was asking for trouble when I wanted this. My Border-Collie lab mix (that you prob saw in my previous videos) had passed away after 14years of loyalty... I was REALLY hesitant about getting another DOG. My next option was to get a WOLFDOG even though I had worked with them before and knew how hard they were to keep. I knew of a few breeders near me and went to meet with them before hand to get a better Idea of what I really wanted. My girl and I discussed it for a couple of weeks to make sure that we really wanted to go that route. She didn't have experience with them Like I did, so I had to explain to her that this would be a challenge and expensive… I then had a dream one night where a black wolfdog saved my life and I instantly had to get one after that. We were going to get one that was more silver colored like wild wolves but I did mention to the breeder I wanted a black one. We heard of a woman who had this black pup and she was not in the best position to take care of herself let alone a wolf so we were given the option to save her and take her home over getting one of the ones that were silver and just born from this specific breeders’ litter. Had I never worked with them before, I would have went to the shelter and rescued a dog instead. But I was still really hurt over my older dog passing from age and I really didn’t want to get a dog again. I hope this helps you better understand that a Wolfdog was not an impulse buy for me. I have seen first hand what happens to these type of dogs when people get them and didn't know what they were getting themselves into. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Then he asks: "Why do you want a Wolfdog?" I think to myself "Because they are fucking awesome." And instantly he answered: "If you want one because they are cool and awesome, horrible answer, they are not for you". Looks like they are not for me hahaha. No time, not much money to invest in a safe area for the dog, not even a decent location for one. In the end, when you get a pet, not just a wolfdog, you need to consider all the aspects of taking care of one. You don't make it adapt to your lifestyle, you need to sacrifice your lifestyle to make the pet/wolfdog the most comfortable way possible. If you can't do that, it's better not having an animal that needs to much sacrifice to take care.

Kind of a sad story, but I had one once. I got him when he was about 9 weeks old. He was half wolf and half Alaskan husky. The Pros. He was mostly black with some white markings. Beautiful, smart, strong, and huge. Way more energetic than dog pups that I've owned. The cons. When he was about two, he began to escape from the yard at night. We lived in the country. He found a flock of sheep about a mile from our house and followed his instincts to kill. A rancher heard the commotion, came out and shot him dead.

So I accidentally bought a wolf dog while attempting to get a German Shepherd. I would say the most difficult part of owning a wolf dog is you are stuck with them. They have a personality like no other animal and they do the strangest shit I rarely go a minute without a laugh around her. I've learned howling can sometimes calm her too. She's broken my hand, torn up everything I own, She broke through every fence I had then I had to tie her up to my 20 foot deck which she managed to rip off the hinges so I had to go with the 10 foot fences and concentrate and she still manages to find her way out so I'm constantly renovating. luckily I'm not near a busy road. I can't walk her without using treats for guidance because she weighs more than me and if she's going somewhere I'm not stopping her. She does bite a lot playfully but they all leave bruises or break skin. In fact, she once dragged me across the house by my arm. I ended up with rug burn and a pretty fucked up arm. She gives me linebacker hugs by jumping over the couch and knocking me off onto the floor. Her tail wags can leave bruises on my face so I have to be careful with that. She does not cuddle with me unless she's worried and trying to protect me. Physically, she is not the dog for me but I'm good with pain and I couldn't stand the thought of getting rid of her even though I also call her an asshole at least once a day. Oh and if you do get a wolf dog, don't run from them, run towards them while playing. Unless you want your clothes torn to shreds in public. Also avoid other dogs they don't know. if another dog jumps on you they WILL kill them usually by locking onto the necks.

A lot depends on the individual dog as well. Not all dogs or even Wolves have the same personality. Had a breed of Wolf with something else ? and he was also very gentle as well. I don't know the % involved but the head, eyes etc plus many traits were basically Wolf. Nothing like any type of dog. Much smarter with keener senses. Very stubborn and independent though.

ANL092396 It was a partial wolf. Just don't know what breed of dog it was mixed with. You can tell from both appearance and keen senses that dogs just do not normally possess. People in the know seem to have recognized him on sight. To me it was his traits that separated him from normal dogs. You don't seem to recognize that all animals have different and variable personalities that sometimes transend their specific breeds.

Thank you for making this video, there's so many dickheads that just buy wild animals because they look cool or they've seen cute videos, the animals just end up suffering because of their ignoracne. My nephew is fascinated by wolves. His walls are covered in them, so when we began looking at getting a puppy I gave the suggestion of a Northern Inuit. A real wolf-dog was out of the question - the dog had to be good with people, children, cats, and other dogs. I was very pleased that on researching breeds he actually picked a GSD, rather than the wolf lookalike. Don't get me wrong the Inuit would have met my criteria - but my nephew put trainability over looks. He has won junior handler with the dog more times than I can count now. Great advice :)

I'll be owning a few myself soon, now that I'm 7 years older and know a good amount of things about wild animals. PLEASE do not get one if you don't know likkety split about them! Another thing he didn't mention is how much they shed WHICH IS A LOT. ESPECIALLY THE WHITE ONES. Because when they want to sit next to you on the couch, when you stand, you will own a freshly shedded fur coat.

I have a 50/50 timber wolf/akabash we had a house fire and ended up having to live in an apartment for a couple of years she was great I got her a big leather chair and she hung out happily while I was at work. we walked before and after work. two things people do not take in to account are what are you breeding this dog with? different breeds have different tendencies and what is the personality of the wolf dog my girl is a rescue and just so happens she is super friendly and laid back. YES I did have to work with her like crazy for the first 4 years and training is ongoing you can't let down your guard. She is an inside dog, although now we have a fenced yard she prefers to be on a long dog run so she can sit outside the fence and watch everything thats going on down the block. She still comes inside to visit throughout the day and stays inside at night. Honestly they are a lot of work and I think that like any dog they are pack animals who need to know where they fit in to the pecking order also like all animals they are unpredictable. I do not encourage the breeding of hybrids as much as I love my wolf and feel honored to have been able to keep her the liklihood of people getting in over their heads is high and these types of dogs need stability to be well adjusted, a problem wolf dog sadly would likely end up being put down,

I love that I found this. When I was young my father got us a wolf dog because I was allergic to dogs and the hybrids had wolf dander not dog dander. Any rate it was awesome to be able to have a companion. Until it was very clear to us, ( btw this was over 30 years ago) that she was not anything like a dog. She could and would rip a part a wooden fence. Jump completely over the fence, many of the things you listed. She got her head stuck in the fence once and my father went to set her free and she chomped down on his hand. She wasn't being mean, she was just scared and agitated. As a young child she became fiercely protective of me. We always joke she thought I was her cub, but even though we grew up together cub and child. She bit people for making me make loud noises, she would constantly put herself between me and other things. Their unequaled devotion and posessiveness has to be taken into account. They are amazing creatures and I miss her all the time still.

That's EXACTLY why people don't like this video. People today don't like to be told that they shouldn't-- or even worse, can't-- have something they like. They come here wanting to be told "you want a wolf dog? Ok, you can have one. You don't need to know anything about them or how to care for them." This is a very well-made video, but it will upset people who just want validation for their desires.

My neighbour's own a Labrador dog and leave it on its own all day, 6 days a week. They never play with it or take it for walks.. It's so badly neglected where socialization is concerned, I never understand why people even contemplate buying a pet dog of they can't even commit to fully caring for it. It's so neglectful.. The poor thing barks constantly out of sheer boredom.. It's learnt to recognise my voice and has seen me breifly while I went to offer the neighbours to take the dog for walks.. They were out though and had just the screen door closed, so it saw me and became familiar. Every time it barks I'm able to appease it.. I wish I could rescue it. I'm so close to abducting it to give it a better life.. 😔

if you wanna get a strong dog and it's something like a wolfdog, get a German Shepherd, and it was proven that usually in a fight, the German Shepherd would win against a wolfdog, they have stronger jaw power and are WAY more determined to see that wolf laying on the ground, it's more loyal, that's why military and the police forces have them. with a wolfdog, they're primal nature would kinda stop them

I have wanted a Wolfdog for years now, but I know that, at least right now, I am unfit for one. My grandparents had two English mastiffs(one has passed) and now they have a Rottweiler so I have some experience with bigger dogs but I’ve been around pugs and Chihuahuas for most of my life so I definitely need more experience. The types of dogs I’ve been thinking about getting for a while now though are Dobermans, GSDs, maybe Huskies, mastiffs, and even a pit bull. It’s not that I think pitties are dangerous, I just used to think they were boring when I was younger because they didn’t look like a wolf, but now I’m just mostly going off personality.

I mean there's nothing effeminate about The Dro's demeanour, and so what if there was. I've said enough. Great vid The Dro. Peace and love xx

Thanks. I appreciate your comment. These are the types of imbeciles who pick on people in school because they are uneducated about other cultures. I play in a rock band and get to tour all over the world, i make a living doing what i love too so what i wear or how i look shouldnt matter. It only matters to those who are shallow af and believe that everyone should look and act like them. I will never change and be one of those losers. I promise that.

I own a Wolfdog and I Lowkey disagree with your first statement... Anyone who owns a wolfdog the main reason we own it because we have a fascination of wolves and they’re the closest thing we can get to own a wolf. Bottom line they’re very cool looking animals. But everything else I agree with you forsure

You may have misunderstood what i was saying there. I completely agree with your statement but what i meant was that this shouldn't be the sole reason. If you cant think of another reason other than "theyre cool" then youre adopting for the wrong reasons and setting yourself up for failure.

The Dro yeah you’re right bro. That’s why I said I agree with everything else you said. Most people can’t handle a normal dog they neglect it and and stuff and they just want to have it at home bored and stuff which leads to digging and wanting to escape. I always say there’s a difference between have a dog and owning a dog lol but good video man on giving some insight on having one

The Dro I'd say that's true for any animal. You see that a lot for the more intense dig breeds like malinois. Unfortunately, it leads to many animals in the shelters.

They are so high-maintenance, and unfortunately a lot of people don't get HOW high-maintenance they are! The exercise alone.. I mean; if you are not willing to do A LOT of exercise every day, several times a day, with your dog, don't even consider it. I think their own worst enemy is how cute they look. And some people think their pets/children are best off as a reflection of themselves, apparently. It's so fucking sad how some people don't think when they purchase an animal, they just go for the looks and how well it reflects on them: "I need a small cute dog, because I'm petite and cute" or "I need a big muscle dog, because.." Yeah, I think people should be forced to take a test, just like when adopting a human child.

I had a wolf dog as my first dog when I was a baby. She was absolutely amazing, gentle, and smart. Very mothering to me. I don't know rlly know what it was but she was not very destructive at all. We definitely had things destroyed but it was never excessive.

Well, not all dogs/animals are the same for one, Humans are not all that different from animals, we still follow our instinct even if we go about them in a complex manner or label them as something more "Scientific" and "Civilized." Every animal has their own personality that melds with their instincts, dogs and cats are very smart and able to identify if something is an infant or not, it's not hard for an animal to make the comparison between their babies and ours, they're both small and they both make loud noises even though they don't have fur. A female wolf-dog could pick up on this, Wolves are VERY smart animals, and being a female, seeing a baby and hearing it cry, may make her nurture instincts kick in even if it isn't her own. In fact tame and domestic dogs are less intelligent than wolves. www.livescience.com/5672-wolves-beat-dogs-logic-test.html

Awesome video, Dro! Incredibly informative. Folks need to know what they are getting into before welcoming an animal like this into their home and family. I worked with a dog rescue group for years and recognized similar things that I tried to explain to people who wanted a small little beagle or a full foxhound. These are pack animals and you have just become their pack. Don’t leave the animal in the yard and expect nothing to happen. Especially liked your question about “why do you want a wolfdog?” Great job!
