    I was an Army MP for 12 years. I would say no because you will be overworked yet still get paid the same as other MOS's that work a regular Mon-Fri 9-5 schedule in garrison. 100 hour work weeks in garrison duty while uncommon are not unheard of, and somewhere around 80 hours a week is the norm due to being undermanned at most posts/bases (There are some sham duty stations for MP's. Good luck getting them). If you were to work the same hours as a civilian police officer you would be making six figures in overtime. You have to remember that your day doesn't end after you work your shift of law enforcement. You may need to go to your company after or before shift to do paperwork or attend mandatory training. You may need to go to the motor pool to conduct maintenance on your ASV's and Humvees. You may need to do barracks maintenance/cleanup or IF you're a leader check on, inspect, or counsel your soldiers. Also, you may not even be working law enforcement. You could be put on gate guard duty which is a mind numbingly boring job. It's just not worth it no matter how much you think you want to be in law enforcement. Just be a civilian police officer instead or choose a different MOS. Additionally, promotion points are generally higher for MP's due to small Regiment size.

    I'm with the 759th mp in Fort Carson. I'm a 91b. I highly discourage anyone from being an MP they're schedule is horrible and when they're not on the roads, they're doing layouts all day. It's rare that they get to enjoy a 4day weekend. But it is pretty good being in a unit with them. Cause once your guys are on the road or gates and you get pulled over. They're just like "oh shit man what's up?! Get outta here"

    WTF is a 31-Bravo......lol? Back in my day we were 95-Bravo's and did Basic and AIT (OSUT for 16 weeks) at Ft McClellan, AL. Seriously though, it's good to see the MP tradition is alive and well with a new generation of soldiers. I spent 6 years total (3 1/2 active, 2 1/2 reserves) as a Military Policeman. Active duty at Ft. Bragg in the 82nd Airborne Division MP Company, then 22 years as a State Police Trooper. Being an MP won't actually help you get hired with a large municipal or state police agency, but the 10 veterans civil service points will bump you over non military veteran applicants. My time as an MP definitely helped me get through our police academy and I was able to retire early with my credited active military service with a full pension and health benefits before the age of 50.

    J High Did the timing work out where you got hired right when you got out or did you have to be done with active duty before you could get hired at any state or big citys

  • @ivanlowjones

    @ivanlowjones

    I went back to school after I ETS'ed and finished the last 1 1/2 years towards my Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice. During that time I took several police department tests and went through the candidate hiring process with two different agencies. Luckily I received my appointment letter to our State Police academy about 2 months after I graduated. I believe nowadays that many larger municipal and state agencies will let active military personnel go through the hiring process as long as they are honorably discharged before they are hired. There seems to be a renewed emphasis on hiring military veterans as opposed to hiring 4 year college graduates since less people are pursuing law enforcement careers over the past decade. Luckily I met both criteria (veteran and college graduate), but I believe some college graduates who never served in the military are "book" smart but don't have the "street" smarts necessary in police work nor the discipline of following orders. Way back when in my State Police academy class, every single cadet who dropped out during training had no prior military experience. They had difficulty with the PT and para-military regulations we were subjected to since our academy is similar to boot camp.

    I have a GED as well and you need to score at least 50 to pass. I got 79 on my AFQT. I know that high school graduates only need to score 31 to pass. But to be honest with you, MOS selection is rather limited with a low score, so I'd suggest you study for 1-2 months and retake it.

    As a MP who has been in for 5 years.. it is what you make it. If you don't like having days off and being with family and being called in on your day off then yes being a MP is for you. You will learn how to complain real fast. Being a MP is great if you have the mentality that you own the base.. I just got off a 96 hour week.. being a MP is tough. But if you work in OPs or higher rank then you have 4 days off and you work 8 hour days. What he said with 14 hour days and being in OPs is wrong, 1SG, PSG and CO work 8 hour days or less.

    Most army bases are run by civilian DOD police. The chances of you actually getting stationed at a base with traditional military police is very slim. Most of the army military police is combat MP, which is a fancy name for infantry. You'll spend most of your days training in the woods, learning infantry tactics. If you're one of the few that actually get stationed at a base that still has military police, you'll only be doing it half of the time. You rotate in and out of the field with other units. If you're still wanting to do traditional 100% military police, you need to join the Marines, Air Force, or Navy. The Army won't change the name military police to what they're actually doing, it should be called light infantry on wheels. The Army knows the name military police sells, and it helps them meet their recruiting goals in the infantry field.

    Every state has a National Guard Response Force (NGRF) that will be trained in riot control to some degree. The response force is a unit that isn't schedule to deploy and rotates each year. Typically 2-3 units will trade the responsibility by the year. MPs are best fit for the rotation but it is common for engineer, infantry, and cavalry units to be assigned the mission if the MP unit is schedule to deploy or focuses on training. I'm currently an MP officer but I served in an infantry battalion that activated for the riots in Baltimore. The MP unit in Maryland just got back from deployment that year so the NGRF mission was ours for the year.

No matter how hot shit your driving skills/ability is, you ALWAYS need a ground guide. 1000 miles of save driving or one year of driving you will earn your drivers badge.
