5:27 also now most interventional cardiologists do two years of fellowship - one for radial access-based procedures and the other for femoral access - basically, those that go to interventional cardiology fellowship either do coronary and structural fellowship (2years) or coronary and vascular fellowship (2years). So nowadays that it's super competitive and there's no combined internal med, cardio, and interventional cardio residencies like thoracic surgery - adding a chief year-post internal med or doing multiple fellowships is at least eight years post- med school without any breaks in between. so it's basically the same duration/commitment as pursuing neurosurgery.

Your description of our field was very good. It is essential that any physician choosing to become a cardiologist carefully choose a training program that is not only very rigorous but which offers the opportunity to become expert and highly skilled in ALL aspects of the subspecialty. As you indicated, such programs are very selective and accept only the best students. It's never too early to develop and to perfect your study techniques in order to become one of those great fellowship applicants. If you succeed, programs will actually compete for you and that's a great feeling.

  • @wholeNwon

I should have added that the compensation you mentioned was not accurate in my own case. Though my income did vary in private practice, an average year's income was approx. $1.5 million and annual incomes of $2 million was not unusual. My practice situation enabled me to treat many pts. free of charge and to remit co-pays, etc. for others. One should give careful thought to whether the subspecialty is appropriate if the fellowship applicant is not a "high achiever" for want of a better term. Much more demanding than fellowship is keeping up with advances in the field while satisfying the demands of caring for the very sickest and most hemodynamically and therapeutically complex pts. If you're up to it, cardiology is by far the best subspecialty of Internal Medicine. Too bad so few have watched this excellent video.

Awesome video! My cardiologist who happens to be an Interventional Cards who I also shadowed prior to medical school, has a very informal relationship where I can ask him anything. On my recent check up with him, 50% of the appointment was just me asking him about his field. I will note that I did ask him how his work life balance is. He turned away from filling out my chart and said, "I love this field and wouldn't choose another speciality, but this is the worst field to go into in terms of work-life balance." That being said, he is a private practice physician (group practice with his father and a PA) on top of his cath lab duties in a rural-ish area.

@@George-pu8hj IC and EP's can see general cardiology patients and often will if they are in private practice. They can just simply do the ablations/interventional Cath procedures themselves on those same patients. Two years ago I was laid up with some bug for six weeks, fatigue, tiredness wiped out. Then after six weeks I had a chest infection for two weeks. After the chest infection my heart rate when standing went up to 180 bpm. This went on for a week then I woke with a pain in my chest and stomach and my heart rate dropped to 44 bpm, with escape and miss beats. I went to the Hospital they said this is normal. No way, your heart do not change like that suddenly. With the history of illness for the last Eight weeks. Some thing has gone wrong with my heart. But they will not listen. At the time I was doing keto diet, which lately have proved heart scaring. I firmly believe my heart problems is from this keto or I have had a virus hit my Heart. I'm 57 and before this I never had any heart problems. Now I'm fatigued, shortness of breath and sleeping a lot.

So, before doing medical school after finising my a-levels I have to do pre-med course which typically lasts 4 years? The pre-med course (undegraduare degree) is where you get the MBBS degree?

Good evening sir i am right now in my med-school and aim to be a cardiothoracic surgeon but no matter how many articles i read , they all say one thing that its a Dying branch as interventional cardiology is very dominant in this new era. Please make a detailed video on the future of CTVS surgery as there is no content related to it on KZread
